25.01.2022 You are cordially invited to peek behind the scenes at our veterinary surgery and watch Dr Matt perform a life saving surgery on "Charlie" the dog. If you are eating your breakfast or have a weak stomach, maybe skip this one. But for everyone else this is just one of the many interesting cases we admit to our practice every day. We never know what is going to happen next, but we are a team dedicated to helping each and every patient!

25.01.2022 WE'VE BEEN LEARNING This is Dr Sophie and 2 of our qualified nurses Nikki and Giz. This year they completed their RECOVER training. What's RECOVER? It's the first evidence-based veterinary CPR guidelines. This year Dr Sophie, Nikki and Kate performed a successful team resuscitation on a snake bitten dog that was trying very hard to die on us. This was before the RECOVER training, so we are now even better equipped to try and wrangle these cases back from death's door. ... Our team are a bunch of study nerds, always hungry for continuing professional development in their niche areas. The next training we are undertaking is fear-free accreditation which is all about preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety & stress in pets. Watch this space!

25.01.2022 VETERINARIAN WANTED to join a small animal practice in far north QLD. Excellent mentorship and exposure to interesting case load (particularly surgical). Higher than average vet to support staff ratios with 2 vets and 4 support staff each day. Our team is focused on clear protocols, positive workplace culture, and the consistent delivery of best practice client service and patient care. All levels of experience from new grad to senior associate are welcome to apply and hours ...are negotiable (full time or permanent part time). Ideally 1 in 3 after hours. We live in a wonderful community close to Cairns, Port Douglas, and the Great Barrier Reef. We have attracted a fantastic client base with zero tolerance for rudeness/abuse of our staff and protocols in place to avoid arguments (including no credit/accounts). We have all the toys and equipment and perform exciting surgeries on the reg including carpal and tarsal arthrodeses, all types of fracture repairs using a large range of implants stocked continuously, TPLOs, and complex soft tissue surgeries. Earlier this year we drove a paralysed patient to Cairns for an MRI and then returned to our practice to perform spinal surgery with a successful outcome (patient is walking again yeah!). This position would suit someone who: Wants exposure to exciting cases that would usually get referred to specialists (we’re too far away for most clients to be able to travel for this). Wants to learn orthopaedics (or don't - no pressure of you'd rather not) Enjoys working within a positive culture with a high level of support. Enjoys working cases up to a high standard with wonderful clients. Is in need of mentoring and guidance from an experienced and highly skilled vet. We are continually growing and evolving as a business and for the right person can provide a long term opportunity to buy into the practice as a director down the track. Email your cover letter and resume to [email protected] by 2nd August 2020.

24.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICKS ARE BAD RIGHT NOW! Your pets should ideally be on a regular, systemic prevention product. Ring us or pop in if you need help choosing. If this is not within your budget you should be doing daily tick searches. Watch Dr Matt's video if you want to learn how to do this properly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on1sCqo73KU

22.01.2022 WATER OFF A DUCK'S BACK....RIGHT? After 38 Google reviews rating us as a 5 service we received the following 1 nasty review today. It is a timely reminder to have your pets on one of many excellent tick prevention products, and to take what you read online with a grain of salt. Unsurprisingly we were one of 3 vets to refuse credit. Vet clinics, like 99% of other businesses, simply can't be short term loan providers too We wish to thank our many wonderful clients who he...ed our preventative health recommendations, and who have the respect not to lash out at us personally when emergencies happen and pets require treatment One way to dilute bad reviews like this is to get more positive ones. Our friends at Tableland Veterinary Service got a nasty review from the same person. So if you appreciate your vet and have a second jump on either of our Google review pages and share your thoughts (for ours link here and click where you see our 5 star rating in the search results https://www.google.com/search) I'd love to say that words like these are water off a duck's back, but sadly they are not At the less devestating end of the spectrum they hurt morale and contribute to the retention crisis of our industry, and at worst fuel the suicide epidemic we are also navigating Our hearts go out to this person who left the review, who also is suffering the deep and all consuming loss of a pet. Hopefully as time heals their pain we can all remember to be kind and always assume good intention

22.01.2022 Congratulations Shannie from Tropical Pet Services for completing our "Advanced Pet Healthcare" course in the Ready Vet Online Training Academy (https://training.readyvet.com.au/). It's fantastic to see so many of the local grooming and pet sitting services developing sophisticated practical skills and improving their medical knowledge for the care of our pets! Our vets have had to perform CPR on patients twice within less than a week so we can't stress enough how important it is to learn these skills if you work with pets or have them.

22.01.2022 Veterinarian wanted to join our award-winning, boutique, 3 vet practice on the Atherton Tablelands. You can expect excellent mentorship and exposure to an interesting case load (particularly surgical). New grads are welcome to apply but our ideal applicant will have at least a year’s experience. Full-time is ideal but we are open to negotiating permanent part-time hours if this is preferred. Salary is a combination of annual salary plus quarterly bonus (the bonus being a p...Continue reading

22.01.2022 Happy Sunday! It's been a HOT week on the Tablelands We're thinking about heat stress and pets. . We see more cases of heat stress in summer, mostly dogs, obese animals, and brachycephalic breeds (short faced breeds like pugs, bulldogs and boxers). Any pet can experience heat stress on a hot or humid day or after being left in a hot car. . Symptoms of heat stress are varied but can include panting, lethargy, collapse, vomiting, diarrhoea, being hot to the touch, salivatin...g, mentally dull, and difficulty breathing. . You should call your vet and commence active cooling immediately by wetting your pet down with water and using a fan or open car windows while driving. Don't use ice packs or cold water as this can make the blood vessels on the body's surface constrict and keep the inside of the body hotter for longer. . As always prevention is better than cure. How do you keep your doggos cool in the summer? Kids are usually good at helping with this See more

21.01.2022 Our second team member who joined us 3 months ago is a champion competitor in the world of dog agility and obedience. If there is anyone who can help owners coax their dogs onto our scales it's Hannah! Hannah is our new Client Care Representative and our whole team has been blown away by how quickly she has learned the Ready Vet ropes - it's like she's been with us forever (meet our whole team at www.readyvet.com.au). Hannah was a regular visitor to the Tablelands while livi...ng and studying in Tully and Townsville. She eventually made the move here, living in Atherton for 6 years before buying a house in Tolga. Hannah has trained horses and dogs at competition level for many years, so a career shift towards animals was a great fit for her and our team! Hannah brings the perfect combination of confidence with animals, knowledge about behaviour and training, plus her strong administrative skillset and perfectionism. Hannah is a social butterfly always up to something like soccer and futsal, hiking with her dogs, paddle boarding, skiing, camping, and anything in the great outdoors! Hannah’s fur babies are Cady the terrier and Cody the attention-loving cat. Hannah and Cady have travelled all over Australia as agility competitors with Cady achieving the coveted title of Agility Champion. Cady ruptured a cruciate ligament in 2019 so Hannah is now teaching her to slow down and focus on obedience training. If you have a dog obedience or training question, Hannah knows her stuff!

21.01.2022 This is Kate our assistant practice manager. As part of Kate's role she manages all of our stock and inventory, and today she is counting errything for EOFY. . Doing the order and managing stock levels may not be as exciting as surgery or critical care nursing (of which she also excels), but it's one of the most important jobs in the practice. It is Kate who ensures that we have everything from products clients want to buy, drugs, suture material, and even surgical plates and... screws of just the right size for complex orthopaedic surgeries. We can do everything on the day the patient shows up, because Kate has done her job well. . She has to stock enough of everything that we don't run out, but not so much that we have our cashflow tied up. She is responsible for making purchases to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars each month. She also researches equipment we need to buy, everything from haemostats to expensive patient monitoring equipment. She does it all without breaking a sweat, and always in good spirits. . Thanks Kate, and everyone who does this often thankless task. It's a huge responsibility and keeps the wheels of the practice turning! See more

21.01.2022 Poor old "Dog" was in this week having an ITO worked up. What's an "ITO"? It's an "injury of toddler origins" that often involves being dropped, stomped on, or slammed in a door by a well-meaning but slightly dangerous small hooman. Dog is on the mend and the small hooman has issued a heartfelt apology. But if you look very closely Dr Matt has a black eye at the moment - Dog isn't the only one with an ITO!

21.01.2022 Sorry we've been a little quiet on social media - it's been CRAY busy!! We have some exciting news - 3 months ago we welcomed 2 new staff members to the team We will start with a much loved veterinary nurse who has made her triumphant return to veterinary medicine after a few years off having bubbas. We are thrilled to welcome Chantal to our team which now has an amazing 5 qualified veterinary nurses and 2 veterinary assistants (see our website for up to date staff profiles w...ww.readyvet.com.au). Chantal was born in Cairns and made the permanent move to the Tablelands in grade 7. She started her career as a veterinary nurse in 2006 after completing an introductory vet nursing course with the AIRC. She completed her Cert IV qualification in 2016 including a Cert II in Animal Studies along the way. Chantal is fascinated by all aspects of nursing but particularly enjoys neonate care, wildlife, and surgery. Chantal loves the feeling of knowing she is helping animals and at the same time doing what she loves. Her ability to develop strong relationships with clients and patients is a big part of why she loves the job so much. When not on veterinary nursing duties you will find Chantal playing at home with her two young boys, baking, crafting, reading, doing cross stitch, and spending time with her much loved fur babies including dogs, cats, and a bird.

19.01.2022 Uh oh, Dog has stink-breath again! A lot of people just accept stinky dog breath - but it isn't normal. It is a good indicator of dental disease which can make pets sick and even cause death. As dogs get older they need more frequent dentals. Dog is turning 13 this year so he really needs his teeth done every year. Smaller breed dogs with maloccluded teeth need frequent dentals from a young age. Unfortunately we can't put dogs in the dental chair and ask them to say "ahhhh" a...nd open up nice and wide for their procedure. So we give them a general anaesthetic. Having said that, I know a lot of humans (and dentists) who wouldn't mind this themselves! We'll get Dog in for a dental soon and he will be minty fresh in no time. It's also a good opportunity to run bloods and check his overall health. We've got to keep this old boy going as long as possible!!

19.01.2022 It's Surgery Sunday! WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT. If you prefer our warm and fuzzy kitten/puppy hugging content you should give this video a miss, and we promise to deliver more of the content you like very soon. If you LOVE watching how we perform surgery (you know who you are!) then this should make for some enjoyable Sunday viewing. Dr Matt loves being in the surgery - it's his happy place :)

17.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICKS ARE EXTREMELY BAD RIGHT NOW . Our normal consulting hours and emergency after hours service has been inundated by tick paralysis cases. This should not be happening - with the products now available tick paralysis is almost totally preventable. . With so many tick cases our vets are working literally around the clock and barely sleeping. The clients presenting the animals suffer with the financial aspect of treatment. The patients are very sick and suffering a...nd some die. . There is a simple solution and it is that every cat and dog should be on a veterinary recommended tick preventative. We are open until midday today. If your pet is not on a veterinary recommended, systemic, tick prevention product, PLEASE come and see us before midday. We don't want to see suffering and death this weekend, or clients who have to be distressed by not only what is happening to their pet but also the reality of what it costs for us to try and save them (with no guarantee that we can in fact stave off death). . Back 6 or more years ago we would see tick cases presented for treatment and think that the client has been unlucky, since there really was no product that could be relied upon to prevent it. Times have changed, and now we wonder why was the dog or cat not on tick prevention. This is not a judgement of the owner, but when you personally care for the animals who suffer and die from ticks you cannot help but ask the question. . Please, please, please, put your pets on tick prevention. See more

15.01.2022 While most of us were fast asleep on Monday at 2:30am Dr Matt and Nikki were delivering 4 beautiful puppies by caesarean Our emergency after hours service means we can get a call like this at any time. Dr Matt and Nikki had time to head home for breakfast before coming back to push through their 8am - 5pm shifts. Legends! . It is always a pleasure to welcome new life into the world and we like to think we're good at it. When puppies are born by caesarean we have t...o resuscitate every one of them and keep them stable until we can latch them on to mumma to feed. Our General Manager and RVN Cat wrote guidelines for the resuscitation of neonates born by caesarean and her recommendations were published in a peer reviewed Australian veterinary nursing journal in 2018. It's our thing! . When caesareans happen during business hours we have more hands on deck to assist, so there is an added element of difficulty after-hours with just 1 vet and 1 nurse. Our nurses are solely responsible for neonate resuscitation but also assist with anaesthesia, the surgery itself, keeping a close eye on mumma and the babes in recovery, and making sure all babies latch and feed. . Dr Matt and Nikki have been delivering puppies by caesarean together for 7 years so these puppies were in excellent hands. Nikki resuscitated all 4 babies and looked after mumma. She has also recently completed her RECOVER qualification in veterinary resuscitation and CPR so she is a bit of a pro in this area . No matter what time of the day or night, delivering puppies NEVER gets old and we consider it a total privilege. Some of the babies become our patients for life, so it's extra special to know they took their first breaths literally in our hands See more

13.01.2022 Three years ago today our team tied blue balloons to the fence to mark the safe arrival of our first born. Thanks to all our clients who have been on this amazing journey with us

12.01.2022 How the hell is it nearly June 30? It's almost time for stocktake and all the other EOFY "fun". Seriously, it's SO much fun counting hundreds of tablets in the pharmacy *sarcastic smile*. . Even though 2020 is flying it has also - at times - felt like the whole world is living in a post apocalyptic nightmare. Luckily our pets are oblivious as to what crazy ol' 2020 has thrown at us, apart from maybe enjoying having their hoomans at home more. . This year our team has coped wi...th radical protocol changes, crazy days, and general stress/pressure like absolute troopers. Poor Hanny was only in month 2 of her training and induction when our systems had to change and we became stretched very thin as a result of new protocols. She was well and truly thrown in the deep end but kept her head above water and a smile on her face. Go Hanny! . With life at Ready Vet getting somewhat back to normal it's finally time to check in with one another and get back into our training and total quality management. We are not unique in having had to adapt to life under Rona and were luckier than most businesses in terms of how we were restricted. We have been inspired by so many businesses on the Tablelands and every single person who just had to find a way to adapt to the new normal. What an amazing community we live in!! See more

12.01.2022 Happy Friday! Puppy love with Dr Matt

12.01.2022 "Dog" Robinson was born on a farm in Augathella. He was destined to a life chasing sheep by day, chained to a basic kennel by night. But the universe had other plans for him and he became the eldest "child" of Dr Matt and Cat. To think if his working dog siblings and cousins could see him now - do you think he'd get teased?

11.01.2022 Please join us in congratulating the youngest ever graduate of the Ready Vet Online Training Academy - Chloe. The course is usually $99 but we have a grand opening special price of $79 if you use the code CELEBRATE at check out. It is open to everyone. For more information head to http://training.readyvet.com.au Here is the article: A NEW course in pet healthcare has been launched by a local veterinary surgery to help owners better understand their pets.... Ready Vet in Atherton, launched the course last week and said it will allow pet owners to be able to better understand any issues with their furry friends. The ‘Advanced Pet Healthcare’ course is now live and available to members of the public. The course is perfect for locals in the pet industry, or those just looking to better understand their pet when in need. Created by Ready Vet Co-Owner and Registered Veterinary Nurse, Cat Robinson, the course will cover a range of subjects that will better help pet owners differentiate between a sick/injured pet and an anxious/stressed pet. Mrs Robinson said that this kind of information could not only save you a lot of time at the vet, but it could also save your pets life. You will be better equipped to identify issues and emergencies early, saving you time and money in the long run, she said. This course will enable you to identify anything from subtle signs of pain right through to life threatening situations. This is another wonderful opportunity for those working in the pet care industry to add value to their service by advocating for pets that need supportive care and exercise. Patient examination, measuring vital signs, basic CPR and administering first aid including wound flushing and basic bandaging are just some of the skills that you could learn through this course. Mrs Robinson is encouraging local pet owners to get involved and expand their knowledge so that they can better help their pets. Many pet owners want to take a proactive, hands-on approach to their pets health-care, and this course can help them do that, she said. This course is also useful as a stepping stone for those wanting to enter the animal care industry or for those just starting out. It might seem daunting but this course is within most people’s capabilities, it is super interesting and will help save pets lives. This is just the first course that Ready Vet has launched on their online training academy and more are expected to follow.

06.01.2022 Dr Matt heading in to treat a tick paralysed pet at 3pm on a Saturday (right now) He went in at 1am last night for the same thing What are you doing now? What were you doing at 1am? What if you had to stop and go to work? . Being on call is part of being a vet in remote areas. And we are happy to do it. But ideally it is for emergencies that can't be avoided. Tick paralysis is totally preventable, and we would love to see all patients on a regular systemic prevention product this tick season . If you need help selecting the best tick prevention product for your pet please call us on 4091 7556 during business hours and our award winning team will be more than happy to assist

05.01.2022 Anyone else having trouble finding their doggos this morning?

05.01.2022 Every winter we try to spread this message far and wide - arthritis is totally treatable! Let us help your pets with the management of their pain. Some people say "Oh he's limping but he's not in pain." WRONG! If a dog is limping it is a clear indicator of pain - they are just very stoic and good at hiding it in their otherwise happy demeanor. Learn more at our blog or come see us https://www.readyvet.com.au/arthritis/

02.01.2022 Congratulations to our latest graduate Cherie! Launch sale ends tomorrow, enter CELEBRATE at check out for a discount ($99 reduced to $79) https://training.readyvet.com.au/ The Mareeba Animal Refuge staff and volunteers have been doing an amazing job learning the content. The pets at the refuge are in excellent hands!

02.01.2022 Happy Monday and please join us in congratulating Terri from Doggy Stylin Mobile Dog Wash & Grooming as our next graduate of the "Advanced Pet Healthcare" course! Terri studied through our Ready Vet Online Training Academy (https://training.readyvet.com.au/) with the goal of helping owners with their pets and being better equipped to answer the many questions she is asked in the course of her work. Terri is now able to complete a basic health check before grooming dogs wh...ich is a fantastic value add! This includes a distance examination, physical examination, and measuring the dog's vital signs using the basic framework we use in veterinary medicine. From there she can record and report her findings to owners and advise anything that might require veterinary attention (eg if she suspects dental disease or arthritis, or even something urgent like the early signs of rodenticide toxicity). This assessment gives Terri peace of mind that the dog is "within normal limits" and therefore healthy enough to be groomed, and she can also provide emergency first aid including basic CPR. Dog groomers and other animal care industry workers (pet sitters, obedience instructors etc) are all part of a pet's broader healthcare team. Animals can't speak and are often reluctant to complain, so the more of us who are monitoring the subtle signs they exhibit and advocating for their needs the better. Terri loved Dr Matt's videos explaining the reading materials and demonstrating the content The course is on sale ($99 reduced to $79 if you enter code CELEBRATE at checkout) until June 30 and there is no time limit for completion.

01.01.2022 Today's real MVP is Dr Sophie! She now has a full day of surgery and consults . Big ups to our amazing nurse Nikki too for assisting with the surgery and resuscitating the puppies!! . Anyone who is used to being up in the night then backing it up with a day of work, what are your secret tips? Parents of babies - this is your bag! Let's help Dr Sophie with ideas
