24.01.2022 Milk doesn't just suddenly appear after the birth having previously been non existent. You dont starve your baby until milk 'comes in' I hope this visual helps ...to explain it! The first milk colostrum is being developed (in normal situations) from the second trimester. You may or may not notice leaking (most dont) Colostrum might be yellow, white or even clear . When the baby is born the milk producing hormone increases as baby is put to the breast. They drink colostrum in small quantities for the first few days before the milk changes. It increases in volume, usually changes yo a white colour and you may find you become engorged and leak everywhere! The more baby feeds, the quicker this can happen. This can be delayed by: Traumatic birth, infrequent breast feeding or replacing breast feeds with formula, stress, poor latch, hormonal irregularities (extremely rare), no or little support. This image is meant to display basic/standard physiology. Every woman is different but in general, this is what boobs usually do! I hope it helps answer some of those questions . . . . #midwifemarley #breastfeeding #breasts #milk #colostrum . - Reposted from @midwifemarley on IG

23.01.2022 It really is time for women to stand up and say its enough. Support people and the use of water in labour and birth are very very basic human rights. Go over t...o RANZCOGs instagram page and have your say about their statement on the use of water in labour. We can go to a pub, a restaurant, a large shopping centre. We can have 100 people at weddings and funerals, but we can only have 1 support person during labour and birth. We can go to aqua aerobics classes, nurses can help shower the elderly and post op patients, but women cant have a shower or bath during labour and birth. Its fucking ridiculous and its time to stop eroding the basic rights of pregnant and birthing women. If theres one good thing to come from this, its that home really is the safest and most appropriate place for women without risk factors to have their babies. Hospitals are for sick people. 21.01.2022 Have you heard the latest news? Many hospitals across Victoria are now imposing a ban on the use of water for comfort in labour. This applies to both baths AND ...showers. This is absolutely unacceptable and just breaks my heart for birthing women in Victoria. Thank you to the Australian College of Midwives for taking such a strong stand against this baseless directive from RANZCOG. Birthing women - your voices MUST be heard and you need to say NO to these absurd regulations which have ZERO basis in scientific evidence. #ENOUGH

20.01.2022 Baby Goldie's arrival was the second VBAC for Kelly so she had an idea of what to expect. Before her birth, Kelly asked her husband Toby to film the baby's arri...val if she had the opportunity to guide her baby out herself. It was another beautiful VBAC birth for Kelly, and Toby captured the moment for them all to keep forever. This video shares the joy of birth so well. Kelly and Toby travelled from Benella and now have three wonderful daughters, Poppy, Willow and Goldie.

20.01.2022 THE AMNIOTIC SAC HAS 2 LAYERS Did your know your babys amniotic sac is composed of 2 layers? Nature truly intended to protect your baby. The layers are ca...lled: The Chorion and The Amnion The chorion and amnion are in contact with each other by the end of the pregnancy, often fused together so that when one breaks, so does the other, but they also can have a thin layer of amniotic fluid in between them. Some women will think their water has ruptured because the Chorion(the outer layer) has ruptured and the fluid in between the 2 layers is leaking. And often women are confused when they are told their waters are still in-tact. BECAUSE WE HAVE 2 LAYERS! The Chorion is the outermost layer that is the toughest layer. It contributes to the development of the placenta. The chorionic villi emerge from the chorion, invade the endometrium, and allow transfer of nutrients from maternal blood to fetal blood. This layer is also called the fore bag. The Amnion is the innermost of the embryonic or fetal membranes, the sac in which your baby is suspended. Early in the pregnancy, this membrane is in close contact with your developing baby, but expands and moves away into a protective bubble as amniotic fluid production increases. This is your "inner bag" or "hind bag" of waters, the sac in which the baby is directly contained. When one is talking about the amniotic sac, this is what one is normally thinking of. For the sake of rupture of membranes, this is the one that really "counts" as having had your water break. This video shows both the Chorion and Amnion : @dradaniellenegri #bellybirth #chorion #amnion #amnioticsac #doulaviewllc #thelamazedoula #repost #lamaze #csection #thelamazedoula #doulaviewllc

18.01.2022 When people say things like, I have to, this may or may not actually be true. If you want to take a commercial flight to Paris, do you have to go through ...airport security? Yes. Sorry. If a doctor advises you to have a procedure, get your labour induced or take a pill, do you have to? No. You might choose to, once youve considered all the information and weighed up the pros and cons. But you dont have to. Its not the law." It's worth being aware that, even if your decisions are being affected by what local facilities can offer and are putting in place, you still retain the right to make decisions about your own body. If you go into a hospital setting (or any other setting) to give birth, you still have the right to decline ANY procedures, tests or medication that you don't want. And it's still your decision as to whether to go there or not. Many of us talk as if we don't have agency, and that was even before we were experiencing a pandemic. "They're not allowing me to...", I've got to...", The nurse said if I don't lose weight I'll have to..." Well, its certainly true that, in times of crisis where people need to pull together towards a common goal, we have less agency than usual. But that doesn't mean we give up our bodily autonomy. This quote is from an upcoming book, and more on that at another time. For loads more information about decision making and how to navigate maternity care, please see my book: What's Right for Me? 17.01.2022 THE YONI AND ITS HISTORICAL SYMBOLISM Eons in the millennia, the yoni (vagina), was regarded a sacred phenomenon the portal between the great heavens and our... planet Earth. Some 5,000 years ago, the Indian Tantric culture and the 1000-year-old Chinese Han dynasty, both believed that the yoni was the gateway from which all of life originated. Regarded as the flowery pool, or the mysterious gate, the two ancient traditions believed that for men to reach a state of balance and good health, they would have to honour the yoni in deep reverence. It was not only about respecting the yoni as a symbol but also about honouring the women partners that these men engaged with in their lives. The yoni, sometimes referred to as pindika, is an aniconic illustration of the goddess Shakti in Hinduism. It is usually shown with the linga its masculine counterpart and together, they symbolize the merging of the microcosmos and the macrocosmos, the divine infinite process of creation and regeneration, and the union of the feminine and the masculine that recreates all of existence. The yoni is theorized as nature's gateway of all births, especially in the esoteric Kaula and Tantra practices, as well as the Shaktism and Shaivism traditions of Hinduism. With the rise of masculine sovereignty and the imbalance of the feminine presence in the modern landscape, the practice of vagina smearing and physical slandering of a womans body parts became the order of the day, tradition over tradition. This led to the need for men to down-grade women, considering them merely baby-making machines, created only to satisfy the lust of men from father to son. Men raped women, their mothers, their daughters and their sisters as a way to reclaim the power of the woman and to contravene her to silence banishing her as the pariah of her clan and the witch that brought doom to her village. Psychologically, it has been proven that when a woman continually hears of her vagina compared to something unpleasant, her mind will shape itself around the idea (Richard E. Nisbett: The Geography of Thought). This was the very nucleus of all womb related ailments and the downfall of our planets need for vaginal sacrament. As yoni rituals ceased, the people of our planet lost their compass for direction, balance and harmony. Heavily obsessed by the vagina, the vagina has been called by many names from pussy, to cunt, to cock sock, to punani," for the sheer pleasure of branding the woman with a derogatory title. The word vagina, comes from the Latin word to mean, sheath, while vulva, means wrapper which originally also meant the uterus. During the expansion of modernity, our perception of the vagina had transformed so drastically that we have now lost the intrinsic symbolism that was at the vanguard of ancient Eastern cultures. Gone are the days when feminine symbols of the yoni were mounted high on sacred altars in every home, where men, women and children bowed down to the vagina, the yoni the gateway of our very birth and the origin of all that exists on this planet and beyond. Although, more and more people are now coming back to the wisdom of the Goddess and yoni worship, the people of the ancient past who held rituals and testament were from many traditions throughout our planets history and here are 8 ancient symbols from different traditions in the world. 1. The Ichthys (pronounced: ichthys) A Christian symbolism of the fish that bear reference to Jesus, officially called the ichthys, originally represented the vagina. It was an ancient symbol that showed up next to any fertility goddess, including Atargatis, the Syrian fertility goddess; Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and sex, and the pagan Great Mother goddess. It has been said that it was chosen as a symbol of Jesus because it was so commonly known and used, but today, Christian scholars are attempting to separate it from its vaginal roots as they do not seem to see the image of the vagina befitting their Saviour. 2. The Lotus Flower The Chinese Han and Ming dynasties especially indicated to this symbol when speaking of the heavenly vagina; the term "golden lotus," was used often in poetry and sacred Taoist texts such as Art of the Bedchamber. It was said to be the core of a woman's compelling yin essence, which keeps the universe in harmonious order. Physically and biologically speaking, the lotus is an aromatic flower, pink and plump, known to blossom in spring when everything in nature is in high expression. In eastern Indian spiritual belief, the lotus flower is the symbol of wisdom and vital energy held in the hand of all that is sacred in all matters Hindu. One such example would be the Lajj Gaur - a lotus-headed Folk goddess associated with abundance, fertility and sexuality, sometimes euphemistically described as Lajja ("modesty.") She is sometimes shown in a birthing posture, but without outward signs of pregnancy. Her fertility aspects is emphasized by the symbolic representation of the genitals, yoni or womb, as blooming lotus flower denoting blooming youth and the infinite fertility (possibilities), that lie within the chambers of the yoni. 3. Vesica Piscis This piece of sacred geometry is the intersection of two circles with the same radius, referring to the meeting of the pairing worlds: the sacred and the earthly. In Italian, it is called a mandorla, which is an almond shape found in many Renaissance paintings, holding the Virgin Mary, who represents the liminality between divine and worldly. The name of this symbol, when translated literally from Latin, means bladder of a fish. This symbol figures prominently Pythagorean history and is considered a holy figure because the ratio of its width to its height was believed to be 165:153 or 1.73203a holy number. It should be noted that the number 153 is written in the Gospel of John as the number of fish that Jesus miraculously caught. Because of this, some believe that it is the symbol for Jesus Christ (ichthys, as mentioned above). The shape was also said to be found in the Ark of the Covenant. Used as an architectural design to frame doorways in Churches and cathedrals, (to represent the doorway/womb to the kingdom of God) throughout time, the versica piscis, is also a symbol commonly found in major corporate brands like Coco Chanel, Mastercard, Gucci, Bloomingdales, Under Armour, the Olympics logo and Audi to name a few. 4. The Pomegranate The word pomegranate, comes from the Latin word "granatis," which means seed of grain. Greeks described the pomegranate as a gift of love that is constantly inviting, and it symbolizes fertility, abundance, and the arrival of spring. While it's often used in works of art to allude beauty and exuberance of the vagina, it specifically is meant to represent the ovary and ova cells. It has been associated in the Renaissance period to paintings of the Virgin Mary and Her son, the ultimate gift to humankind. The juice that comes from the fruit is meant to represent blood both menstrual blood and the blood of Christ that is eternally giving, hence, it is not uncommon that the fruit is commonly called the "blood of life." 5. The Serpent The first thing that possibly comes to mind is how the snake tempted Eve in the Bible to eat a piece of fruit that was supposedly forbidden, although scholars contend that this was one of the first times that the serpent had been negatively portrayed in relation to females. However, long before that, Egyptian goddesses, representing nature and beauty, were portrayed with snakes in Their hands, as the serpent is a symbol of divine sexuality. During the Ancient Crete civilization, from 3000-1200 B.C., images of the Great Goddess always had snakes entwined around Her to represent birth, regeneration, and overall protection. The famous Greek text Metamorphoses told the story of Arethusa, who transformed Herself into a serpent, representing the powerful vulva, to mate with Her true love. 6. The Boat In Sumerian hymns that praised women as goddesses, the vulva was often referred to as "a boat of heaven," a vessel meant to carry all the magnificent gifts from heaven down to the mortals. Devadatta Kali writes in In Praise of the Goddess: The Devimahatmaya and Its Meaning, that the ancient Indian text, from 16 centuries ago, identified the womb as floating in the middle of the ocean, extending through the sky to bring down creative power to the earth below. The Divine Mother and Her boat of a vagina are depicted as the center of the universe. 7. Jade For thousands of years, Taoist sexual texts explicitly used jade as a symbol of the vagina and female sexuality in general. The opening of the vagina was called the "jade garden," and men were instructed to suck on a woman's nipples to extract "jade juice," from the yoni. 8. The Ankh The ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol that was most commonly used in writing and in art to depict the word for life, or breath of life. In general sense the ankh stands for fertility as the loop represented the vagina and the line below the penis in union with the vagina. The most well-known treatise about worshipping the yoni is, without doubt the Yoni Tantra a tantric text depicting a dialog between Shiva and Parvati, which discloses the highly venerated sadhana practiced by kaulas (tantrics), the yoni puja. It is in Chapter 3 of the Yoni Tantra, where it is mentioned that, Devi is at the base of the yoni and Naganandini is in the yoni. Kali and Tara are in the yoni chakra, and Chinnamasta in the hair. Bagalamukhi and Matangi are on the rim of the yoni. Mahalakshmi (Kamalatmika), Shodashi (Tripura Sundari), and Bhuvaneshvari are within the yoni. By worshipping the yoni, one certainly worships Shakti. And Chapter 4 of the same text states: "Worshipping this causes Shivoham. Listen, Parvati! Krishna, after worshipping Radha's yoni, became God Krishna. Shree Rama Janaki Nath worshipped Sitas yoni. Killing Ravana and his clan, he then went to Ayodhya City and lived in a beautiful palace there. Vishnu, Brahma, the saints and I myself all were born from a yoni. What knowledge in the three worlds can match the magnificence of the yoni tattva? " Every single vortex on this planet is a represent of the yoni: from the eye of the hurricane to the openings of ancient caves, indicative of natures need of the sacred portal that transcends dimensions and epochs of existence the whole Universe depends on it; it is what aids us in our spiritual ascension and guides us to reaching our highest calling lifetime after lifetime May you ascend in the wisdom of the Goddess Jai Maa! 16.01.2022 Really important to empty your bladder in labour to enable the baby to come down and also to aid the uterus to contract back after you’ve had the baby. So regul...ar toilet breaks are a must in labour!! #Repost @midwifemarley During labour, make sure you try and pee as often as you can. Sometimes having a full bladder can have an impact on the baby's ability to descend effectively into the pelvis. I've cared for countless women during labour where things have slowed down a little at the end. After being encouraged to go to the toilet to empty the bladder, the baby is often born almost immediately! Caring for your bladder during birth is so important. You can prevent pelvic floor problems later on by not allowing it to become overly distended Via @2lifedoula @thebirthimpact #thebirthimpact #thelamazedoula #doulaviewllc #childbirtheducation #informedbirth #empoweredwomenempowerwomen

15.01.2022 I share this visual often.... "Movement is so important during labor!" Certainly you've heard this before, but WHY?? Well.. It's all physiology!! . When a labor...ing person quiets their mind and follows their intuition, they become open and enabled to move in ways that help their baby move down into the pelvis, past the sacrum and under the pubic bone for their vaginal exit. Not only does this help the laboring person stay more comfortable, but it helps the baby get into best birthing position to enhance the efficiency of each contraction. . #physiology #bestbirthingposition #laboranddelivery #atlantadoula #birthdoula #3rdtrimester #naturalbirthing #birthteam #supportedbirth #childbirth #childbirtheducation #childbirthed #birthball #empoweredbirthproject #empoweredbirth #childbearing #choicesinchildbirth #riverdaledoula #pregnantlife #birthplan #georgiabirthnetwork #Reposted @ostetricaviviana See more

12.01.2022 An important series of papers relating to the COVID-19 pandemic has been published in the journal Medical Anthropology Quarterly. One of them concerns women's r...ights in childbirth. "Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic ... stories have emerged ... of women having their labor induced, being forced to have cesarean sections, giving birth alone, and being separated from their babies immediately after birth. Current responses to the pandemic in maternal healthcare and the acceptance of these measures on the basis of necessity not only imply serious infringements of human rights but also present a serious risk that the precarious status of womens rights in childbirth will become the new normal." 09.01.2022 A prospective cohort study comparing labour and birth outcomes between women having their first baby who used epidural analgesia (EA) and women having their fir...st baby who didn't have an epidural shows significant associations between epidural use and several intrapartum outcomes. "Women using epidural analgesia were more likely to require a vacuum-assisted birth (RRR 3.35, p < 0.01) or forceps-assisted birth (RRR 11.69, p < 0.01). Exposure to EA was associated with significantly greater risk of 10 h first (OR 6.72, p = 0.01) and 2 h second (OR 2.25, p < 0.01) stage labour, increased likelihood of receiving IV syntocinon (OR 9.38, p < 0.01), antibiotics (OR 2.97, p < 0.01) and a greater probability of pyrexia (OR 10.26, p < 0.01). Women who used EA were half as likely to be breastfeeding at three months postpartum (OR 0.53, p < 0.01). No differences were observed between groups in neonatal outcomes." https://www.womenandbirth.org//S1871-5192(20)3031/fulltext

08.01.2022 THE UMBILICAL CORD The umbilical cord is a conduit between the developing baby and the placenta. During prenatal development, the umbilical cord is ...physiologically and genetically part of the baby. The umbilical contains 2 arteries(umbilical arteries), and 1 vein(umbilical vein), which are buried within Wharton's jelly that all beautifully form the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord develops from the yolk sacand allantois. It forms by the 5th week of pregnancy, replacing the yolk sac as the source of nutrients for the baby. The cord is not directly connected to the mother's circulatory system, but instead joins the placenta, which transfers materials to and from the maternal blood without allowing direct mixing The umbilical cord in a full term baby is usually about 20 inches long and about 0.75 inches in diameter The blood flow through the umbilical cord is approximately 35 ml / min at 20 weeks, and 240 ml / min at 40 weeks of gestation. Adapted to the weight of the baby, this corresponds to 115 ml / min / kg at 20 weeks and 64 ml / min / kg at 40 weeks The umbilical cord enters the baby via the abdomen, at the point which (after separation) will become the babys belly button Within the baby, the umbilical vein continues towards the transverse fissure of the liver, where it splits into two. One of these branches joins with the hepatic portal vein (connecting to its left branch), which carries blood into the liver. The second branch (known as the ductus venosus) bypasses the liver and flows into the inferior vena cava, which carries blood towards the heart. The two umbilical arteries branch from the internal iliac arteries, and pass on either side of the urinary bladder into the umbilical cord, completing the circuit back to the placenta The umbilical vein supplies the baby with oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta. The babys heart pumps deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood through the umbilical arteries and back to the placenta. THE UMBILICAL CORD IS PERFECTLY DESIGNED TO MAKE A GORGEOUS EXCHANGE OF GOOD THINGS COMING IN AND BAD THINGS GOING OUT In absence of external interventions, the umbilical cord stops/closes up physiologically shortly after birth, explained both by a swelling and collapse of Wharton's jelly in response to a reduction in temperature and by vasoconstriction of the blood vessels by smooth muscle contraction. In effect, a natural clamp is created, halting the flow of blood. THE UMBILICAL CORD COLLAPSES ON ITS OWN AFTER BIRTH, ALLOWING YOUR BABY TO SURVIVE ON ITS OWN. THIS IS WHY WAITING TILL THE CORD IS COMPLETELY WHITE AND LIMP IS CRUCIAL FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION AND RECEIVING ALL PLACENTAL BLOOD www.lamazedoula.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/doulaviewllc PhotoCred: The Nurturing Root

08.01.2022 A reminder that, earlier this year, expert researchers at Oxford Brookes University brought together research on childbirth, birth setting and the use of water ...immersion in labour and shared key points which highlighted the safety and benefits of the use of water for labour and birth, during and beyond the coronavirus pandemic. Their points included that: Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. COVID-19 is not a waterborne virus, therefore, the water environment dilutes respiratory droplet and faecal contamination potential. In the Coronavirus context, water immersion presents a lower risk of contamination risk for midwives compared with bed birth because it promotes the use of social distancing without interrupting normal midwifery care. Burns et al (2020) The authors also noted that: "The birthing pool environment presents a natural barrier between the woman and her midwife. Supporting women in the water reduces droplet, aerosol and faecal contamination, presenting a low-risk transmission activity for the Coronavirus. Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. For primiparous women, birthing in midwifery-led settings (AMU/FMU or home) water immersion reduces transfer rate with the greatest benefit seen at FMU. Water immersion for labour and/or birth should be supported and encouraged as an effective method of analgesia." Burns E, Feeley C, Venderlaan J et al (2020). 07.01.2022 Feeling a mixture of sad and frustrated. It's an all too common story - people going into hospital for an induction (for whatever reason) and actually, they don...'t even know what an induction involves. Sometimes, your baby may be better out than in and that is when an induction is justified, after weighing up the pros and cons. However, as many as 1 in 3 birthing people have an induction and that is absolutely horrific! Are we saying that our bodies actually can't go into labour when they are ready? The worst part is that it is very rare the process of an induction has been discussed, the research shared and the pros and cons given. People don't realise it could take 4 days. They don't realise it increases the chance of caesarean, epidurals and assisted birth. People don't realise they may be waiting around because the labour ward is too busy. It is very rarely a case of going in and 3 hours later your baby is born. It just doesn't work that way. Sometimes, it doesn't work at all. It really worries me that this information isn't always being shared with people, because how have you made an informed decision to be induced if you don't know the pros and cons? By no means am I saying don't have an induction, because if it is medically the best option then it is wonderful that we have these interventions. However, it is not a decision to be made lightly. It isn't JUST an induction. It is potentially a whole new pathway of intervention that you may never have had if you had gone into labour on your own. This is why I spend a lengthy amount of time in all my classes, talking you through the rational, the process, the research and the practicalities of an induction incase it is something that meets your path, so you can make a truly informed decision if the time comes. . : Fødselsfotografen - Reposted from @reframingbirth on IG . . . #thelittlebirthcompanyfamily #womensupportingwomen #hypnobirthinginstructor #thelbc #hypnobirthing #babyonboard #mumtobe2020 #20weekspregnant #midwifery #thelittlebirthcompany

06.01.2022 Regarding umedicated, physiological birth, well, there is good news, and bad news. The bad news: you cannot be saved. You can have a midwife, you can have a ...doula, but it is you alone who must journey to another dimension, to claim your baby. This is spiritual work. We cannot come with you. The good news? You. dont. need. saving. You see, over time weve capitulated to the idea that we shouldnt need to feel the full extent of the birthing process. Or, that if things get too hard, were doing something wrong. We will agree, up front, to a certain amount of sensation, but beyond that its too much. What if you knew up front that you were going to be thoroughly decimated? What if you understood: birth will bring you to your edge, and beyond that edge there is another edge, and then another, and another? What if, you understood that up front, and gave the universe a handshake and a nod that youre up for it. This is NOT about martyrdom. This IS about reframing most of what youve been led to believe about childbirth. And what if it is not without divine purpose. It IS big, yes. It is ok to be overwhelmed, and even scared because HOLY SHIT, NOTHING has prepared you for this (not even your previous births). Its ok to not know what to do. And it is ok to do it anyway. The sensations, and our thoughts that come up because of them, in no way mean anything is wrong. Surrender. Over and over, soften your muscles, rest between surges, and do it again. Holy shit, yall. We came to this earth, in these bodies, because WE ARE CAPABLE. We were given THE highest honor among humans. And it is BECAUSE of this POWER and CAPACITY we have been convinced of the spin stories. You can curse, and sweat, and cry, and doubt yourself, even wish for a fucking epidural, and you can do. it. anyway. You will emerge from the storm, a tiny boat on the vast ocean just after an epic storm, intact, forever changed, and weathered by the salt of your sweat and tears. This. THIS is your #birthright. @jotisha . - Reposted from @heartofgoldbirth See more

05.01.2022 THE BIRTH JOURNEY Dilatation is only one of the changes of the amazing journey that your cervix goes through during labour. . If you are pregnant, chec...k out the antenatal-hypnobirthing online course in bio for an informed and better birth experience ! . Despite the fact that dilation takes the centre stage when we talk about birth, the truth is that the centimetres that our cervix dilates, are only part of the incredible birth journey. . The transformation our cervix undergoes before or during dilation is as follows; . Effacement: the thinning or shortening of the cervix. Its measured in %. Station: Position of babys head inside the pelvis (negative numbers indicate head is still high) (positive number indicates the head is lower ) Consistency: Texture of the cervix . Hard or soft (getting ready for birth) Position: Position of the cervix . Pointing to the mums back (posterior) is the position during the entire pregnancy and moves over to the central position to the anterior position, pointing to mums bump, the position to give birth. Dilatation: From 0 to 10 cm. . For this same reason, 2 cm of dilatation will never be just 2cm ... they will be wow! Already 2 cm! considering the rest of the changes in the cervix. . You are amazing! Our body is amazing! . Did the midwife perform a internal examination during your birth? Did she tell you about all these findings or just about dilatation? . - Reposted from bumptobabyacademy See more

05.01.2022 With all the conversation around birth rights, it seems timely to re-share this reminder that, in our modern world, weve developed standards and pathways and g...uidelines which guide the health care that is offered in systems. But the standard path wont be the best way for everyone and you might not think its the right one for you. Dont forget that standards and guidelines are created so that bureaucratic systems can run smoothly. They are only an offer and its ok to say, thats not right for me. 05.01.2022 Dads often get overlooked when it comes to the emotions of birth. We don't really talk about how it feels to watch the person that you love, be in pain. We... don't talk about how it feels to stand by and wait for your child to be born when you have no control over it. We don't talk about the pressure of providing emotional and physical support for an event that you have never witnessed before. We don't talk about the waves of emotion that can hit you when you finally connect with the child that your partner has known for 9 months but that you are just now seeing. Its a lot. Its life-changing. Its the birth of a father. Dads deserve support too. In fact, that's a good chunk of what I do at births. I reassure dad that everything is normal and that mom is safe when he gets that worried look. I explain what is happening as its happening. I show him how to provide support that feels productive. I make sure that he eats and hydrates and rests so that he is ready to meet his baby. I look him in the eye and say congratulations when he holds his baby for the first time. I take away as much pressure and stress as possible so that he can be present for this moment that will also change his life forever. 03.01.2022 Have you heard the news? Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG has suggested that all hospitals in COVID-19 hotspots ban water imm...ersion in labour and birth for ALL women Has this rolled out at your local hospital? "However, in the setting of increased community transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19), services are advised to suspend the use of water immersion for labour and birth for all women. The protection of our maternity and neonatal health care workforce is essential. PPE is not effective when wet and consequently, the use of water immersion during this period presents an unacceptable risk." Oh wait, it gets even better... "Consideration should be given to early epidural in labour as an option for analgesia e.g. as an alternative to nitrous oxide." What the actual!? An unacceptable risk!? What about the risk to women and babies? The risk of early epidurals which increase the likelihood of caesareans. The risk, when it's worn by women and babies, is acceptable, is it? All this based on not one shred of evidence! #ENOUGH The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) have written a wonderful statement contesting this with some absolutely fantastic points including: COVID-19 is airborne, so water immersion is actually likely to REDUCE the transmission risk! Water dilutes viral particles, further reducing transmission potential when compared to land based births. Baths enable social distancing between the woman and her care providers/supports. Women giving birth in water often 'receive' their babies themselves, reducing the contact between the care provider and woman. There are already stringent cleaning procedures in place to disinfect birth pools post water immersion. Give us our water back!! Do NOT take one of the most useful natural pain relief options away from women, especially not when there is absolutely no evidence to warrant it Jerusha Sutton Doula Photographer UPDATE: Add your name to the petition - https://www.change.org/p/the-royal-australian-and-new-zeala

03.01.2022 You may have seen DHHS and Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG statements recommending that water immersion for labour and birth... be banned in COVID-19 hotspots. Not only does this strip women of one of the best natural pain relief tools we have, but it's absolutely not evidence based! We currently have no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 is more (or even at all!) transmissible in water. I'm pretty confused how water birth, where: Mum often catches her own baby Faeces and amniotic fluids are caught and diluted by the water, and Social distancing requirements are more likely to be adhered to is more risky for the care provider than land births, where you're entirely more likely to encounter undiluted amniotic fluid or faeces! Furthermore, RANZCOG recommends 'early epidurals'...Great! We know that those are wonderfully risk free for women and babies Jerusha Sutton Doula Photographer and Elizabeth Farnsworth Photography UPDATE: add your name to the petition!! https://www.change.org/p/the-royal-australian-and-new-zeala

03.01.2022 If you want to know where a womans true power lies, look to those primal experiences weve been taught to fearthe very same experiences the culture has taugh...t us to distance ourselves from as much as possible, often by medicalizing them so that we are barely conscious of them anymore. 01.01.2022 Birth trauma is... Being transferred from home to hospital for no actual medical reason... Expecting to see your midwifes smiling and knowledgeable self at th...e hospital when you arrive, only to realize she completely abandoned you.. Getting the epidural that you didnt want because when your husband was bringing your stuff in from the car, the nurse told you that you were being too loud for everyone else.. Pushing on your back because your epidural was so mind numbingly strong you couldnt move anything but your arms and head... Having your placenta pulled out just moments after birth while you were trying to hold your baby, then you hemorrhage so badly due to it, they take your baby, and the staff stick their arms inside you to cease the bleeding.. Being given an extra stitch, also known as a husband stitch... Having your baby taken from you in your postpartum suite, to the NICU due to a fever... Still being numb/temporarily paralyzed from your epidural and having to be pushed in a wheelchair every hour and a half to the NICU for 5 days... & still being told that your birth was beautiful and we were lucky we were in the hospital for it. Its birth trauma awareness week! A doulas job is never done until birth trauma ceases to exist! What is birth trauma to you? Photo cred to the lovely Sweet Plum Photography!

01.01.2022 Day 5 #BasicBirthRights #TheBottomLine campaign: You cannot be compelled to go to hospital and it is not illegal to give birth without assistance. In normal tim...es, home birth is an option that NHS England expects to be available in all areas. During the pandemic some services have suspended home birth services for temporary periods due to significant staff shortages and/or issues with ambulance response times, although other services have kept going and/or in place alternative measures such as private ambulance services to ensure home birth remains an option. However, although you will wish to think carefully about any decision to give birth without assistance, you should know that no one can compel you to leave home to give birth, and that unassisted birth is not illegal. A midwife’s duty is to put the people they care for first - this still applies even in a pandemic. 01.01.2022 En Caul Birth The best unwrapped gift! Baby encased in an intact amniotic sac!... Via @2lifedoula #Repost @medicalpedia The amniotic sac, or bag of water, or membranes, is a balloon-like membrane filled with amniotic fluid that a fetus grows in during pregnancy. In most cases, rupture of the amniotic sac occurs spontaneously at full term either during or at the beginning of labor. If that event doesn’t take place, amniotomy (an artificial rupture of membranes) is the procedure done by which the amniotic sac is deliberately ruptured so as to cause the release of amniotic fluid. Amniotomy is usually performed for the purpose of inducing or expediting labor. An en-caul birth, when a baby emerges still encased in the amniotic sac at birth, is extremely rare but it does not pose a specific risk on the baby nor the mother. It is a beautiful sight. #doulaviewllc #thelamazedoula #atlantadoula #birthdoula #postpartumdoula #doulalife #empoweredbirth #encaulbirth
