19.01.2022 April is World Autism Month Children with ASD are more likely to have problems with their motor skill development and can be less physically active than their peers, missing out on fun social interactions. Physiotherapy can help support children with Autism to achieve their motor milestones and help them to take part in exercise so they can lead active healthy lives. Why are motor skills challenging for children with ASD?: - Poor coordination making it difficult for them t...o organise their movements so activities such as climbing or catching a ball are tricky - Delays to development - Reduced ability to copy others, imitation is a large part of skill acquisition in young children - Difficulties with planning movements meaning they do not move their bodies into a variety of different positions - Poor postural control and balance this makes it difficult to carry out challenging motor tasks Take a look at the article by Healthline which gives 5 exercise activities for children with ASD. https://www.healthline.com/h/exercises-for-kids-with-autism

14.01.2022 We like to move it, move it! Are your children moving as much as they should be? The Australian guidelines recommend that children up to 5 years old should be physically active for at least 3 hours a day and children between 5 and 18 should be doing at least 1 hour of moderate to vigorous activity. They also recommend that over 5’s should be including activities that strengthen muscles and bones at least 3 days a week. What does that look like? The activity doesn’t have to b...e done all at once, it can be spread across the day/week and any activity that gets your child moving and huffing and puffing counts. Try things like using a scooter or riding bikes to and from school a few times a week, play running games in the park or having a dance in the living room. The important thing is to sit less and move more. SO MOVE IT! For more info check out 100Steps https://www.10000steps.org.au//australias-physical-activi/ See more

12.01.2022 For Infant Mental Health Awareness Week Ready Steady Therapy are reflecting on how we include infants in their physiotherapy so that they feel supported and safe. We believe being able to carry out physio in the home allows babies to stay relaxed and calm and we love to use their favourite toys so things stay familiar. We also encourage strategies that naturally fit with the babies usual routines so opportunities to develop are maximised. And lastly we are led by the infant, being aware of their emotions and needs so they feel secure whilst having therapy. #IMAWH21 #paediaitricphysio #earlyyearsdevelopment #babymilestones

10.01.2022 This is an interesting article and link to a study that monitored the use of Botulinum toxin A in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) at Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level II. The study showed that Botulinum toxin A helped to maintain motor function and therefore physical participation for children with CP at a GMFCS level II when used alongside other treatments such as physiotherapy. https://cerebralpalsynewstoday.com//long-term-botulinum-/

09.01.2022 Our children at Ready Steady Therapy have been loving using the gym ball in therapy over the past few weeks. Here are a few of our favourite activities to help improve balance and increase strength. Why don’t you give them a try? - Wheelbarrow walks, place 10 toys out in front of the ball and see how many you can pick up (one at a time) in 20 seconds. - Overhead throw using the gym ball - Sitting on the gym ball whilst it's being wobbled, don’t fall off!

09.01.2022 With term 4 now underway, it’s important you check your child’s backpack is still in good condition. Check the straps make sure they are still firm and fastened tightly, the bag should sit close to your child’s back, and make sure the bottom of the bag hasn’t started to sag. Most importantly do not overfill the bag, it should only weigh 10% of your child’s body weight. Here is a helpful article from the ABC to check your child’s backpack is fitting ok. https://www.abc.net.au//child-school-bag-should-w/12032558

06.01.2022 It’s starting to warm up and we’re reaching for our togs! The water is a great way of building strength and improving coordination in a fun, safe and effective way. Here’s 3 exercises that Ready Steady Therapy love to use to increase core strength: - Noodle races, sit on the noodle, hold on and pump those legs all the way to the other side of the pool! - Sit on the noodle like you are sitting on a swing, play ball games keeping your arms up out of the water, don’t fall off! ... - Kneel down in the shallow end, using your hands or a float move the water in front, behind and to the sides. The aim is for your child not to fall into the water. Added bonus it’s a workout for you too See more
