05.01.2022 Well, what an off season that was! From lockdowns to loo roll shortages, COVID-19 has certainly hit a lot of people, businesses and countries for 6 Times have... certainly changed, with the banning of high fives, no shining of the ball and people who used to cough to cover up a fart are now farting to cover up a cough... Despite all the doom and gloom, the Penguins were pumped to kick off their 2020/21 season with a trip to Franklin, taking on the Southern Tigers. The day definitely had a spooky feel to it, although it was hard to tell if it was due to Halloween or the fact that there was no rain forecast on a Saturday... Normality quickly resumed when Captain Cracker lost the toss, and the Penguins were sent into the field. Snake and the Cherry Man were given the task of trying to find some early break throughs with the new pill. The absence of man made moisture being applied to the outer coverings of the shiny white Kookaburra did not seem to bother either bowler, with each able to generate some serious swing - albeit a little wayward at times... They both found the outside edges of the tigers openers, but unfortunately the slips cordon of Joey and Joshy thought the ball had corona, and didn't want to catch it. With the score on 45, Dave snagged the first break through, courtesy of a nice catch in gully by Hoops. After 12 overs, the skipper decided it was time for a change and told Hoops (3-34) to loosen up. He lived up to his name getting the ball to hoop away late. This helped him claim two LBW's in three balls, arresting some of the tigers early momentum, seeing them move to 3-72. Cracker (1-20) then bought himself on from the other end and was able to find middle peg with the effort ball, the score 4-88. Joshy followed Cracker with some good tight bowling without luck, while Hooper was able to snare another crucial wicket just as the tigers were looking dangerous, thanks to an all time classic catch contender from Junny, 5-126. Cracker sensed that the time was right and decided to request some spin. Scoota (3-14) and Joey (2-12) were more than happy to oblige, and proceeded to tangle up the tigers tail with some terrific turners. Spin, bounce, drift, flight. It was all on show. The spin twins were able close out the tigers inning at 164. The chase started well enough, with Hoops (8) and Crack (27) taking the score to 20, before Hoops got a bit ambitious and holed out to mid on. Joey (24) then joined Cracker and the pair put on 25, including a few nice boundaries, before the skipper departed. Joshy was in next and set to work on building a partnership with J-Wo. The pair showed good patience, steadily building the total to 86, before Joey tried to lift one over mid on but didn't quite connect. Sammy (5) joined his brother, and looked good until he missed the full straight one. Dave (16) helped take the Penguins closer to their target, but they still needed 31 when he departed. When Jeddles failed to trouble the scorers, things were looking tight at 6-139. Scoota (8) looked like he might help Joshy steer the Penguins home, but he too fell victim to the straight one. When Paddy departed for a duck in the same over, there were some very nervous Penguins watching from the boundary with the score 8-158. Jakey was able to fend off the last ball of the over, and Joshy managed a single from the next. 6 runs needed. 2 overs remaining. Joshy then found the gap between mid wicket and mid on two balls in a row for a 2 and a 4, giving the Penguins the win in a nail-biter, and finishing up on 50*. A great timed knock. Well done lads!
