23.01.2022 First Rule of Sports Club Tamborine Club Vanessa Hodson has been venue operations manager at Tamborine Mountain Memorial Sports Centre for 18 months, but her tenure boasts 3 years and counting. As a part of one of the most locally-minded organisations on the mountain, she shares her insights - by Kyle Hitchmough For those who might not understand, can you describe what the centre offers?... We have bowls and croquet here, as well as a social club. Our bistro is open five days a week for lunch and three nights a week for dinner. We have TAB, Keno, twenty gaming machines, and live music every Friday night. We have free barefoot bowls on Sundays. We’re becoming more of a community club. It was originally a bowls club, and then the croquet club joined and we became a sports club. But we’re offering a space for other community clubs like the Probus club to allow them to have their meetings here free of charge so they can utilise our facilities. What do you think is the club’s biggest draw? I would say it’s the social interaction. This is a place where the local crowd can catch up with friends for a drink or meal inside, or sit outside on the verandah, or have a game of pool. We’re off the tourist strip so we’re not as busy as other places. The live music is always very popular. We have days like Australia Day, where we have pig races and fundraising for th e rural fire brigade. The main thing is that it’s a relaxed atmosphere, the staff are always friendly, we have ... 22.01.2022 Asian Fusion, A Forgone Conclusion Mountain Top Chinese & Japanese Cuisine is one of the best places on Mount Tamborine to sate one’s craving for Japanese, Chinese, or anything in between. Cindy You, manager, shares what she feels makes this sushi train and Chinese restaurant combo so unique and so successful - by Kyle Hitchmough How long have you been working here?... I have been the manager for almost two and a half years. In the beginning I had a part time job here as a uni student just doing two or three shifts a week. Then when I graduated, I became a full time manager. As I’m Asian and this is an Asian restaurant it’s easy to communicate with the kitchen staff, and also my English is not too bad, so I’m able to talk to the customers. Do you know how the restaurant got started? The owner wanted to open a business. He’d been working in Asian restaurants for a while. He is Chinese and had a Japanese friend: they decided to work together to open a restaurant with both sushi and Chinese food. People love both of them, that was the idea of the business. The owner had been searching for a good place and the mountain had many good opportunities. It did not have much Asian food so they decided to open the shop here. 19.01.2022 Better Groves and Gardens Birchgrove Nursery Birchgrove Nursery has been a Tamborine mountain fixture since 1981, but Michele Taylor has owned it for 13 years now. Today she shares her stories on being part of an iconic mountain staple - by Kyle Hitchmough You seem have a few specialties, like a focus on roses. Can you tell us more about that?... We specialise in roses, magnolias, rhododendrons, maples With our roses we always have the favourite base range and we add to it with the new releases that are coming through. David Austin roses, Delbard roses, lots of old-fashioned and perfumed varieties as well. Most people, when they’re buying a rose, want something that repeats flowering. The perfumed roses grow well in Queensland, so that’s what we try to aim for. What’s your most popular plant? It’s seasonal. This time of year, it’s not roses, it’s camellias because they’re in flower and everyone wants colour through winter. We specialise in deciduous and blossom trees. Most people gravitate towards the English-style gardens on the mountain because that’s the style that suits the area. We do speciality natives as well, though. 14.01.2022 SOUL HOUSE IS EVERYONE’S HOUSE It’s no secret that there are many hairdressers here on Mount Tamborine, but Soul House of Hair stands out for quite a few reasons, billing themselves as a ‘eco-salon’ not the least of them. We sit down with owner Crystal White to find out what really makes Soul House the soul of our community - by Kyle Hitchmough You call yourselves an eco-salon. Can you explain what that means?... We are about 97% sustainable at this stage. What it means is that we have next to zero wastage in the salon. That goes from hair, colour, products you name it, it’s completely recycled and repurposed. We literally put one bag of garbage into a green bin a month that has biodegradables and other non-recyclables in it. Absolutely everything else is recycled or repurposed into something else, or it’s on-sold to be repurposed and that money goes to charity. You’re involved in a lot of charity initiatives as well. Can you tell us more about that? We recently just did an initiative for breast cancer awareness and raised $2600, so that was pretty amazing. We are called Soul House of Hair because we are part of the soul of the community. A hairdressing salon traditionally was about bringing people together in a place.. 13.01.2022 HICKORY DICKORY DOCK Tamborine Mountain might be beautiful during the day, but it isn’t without its nightlife either. Ian Martin is one of the owners of Hickory, and one of the mountain’s best-kept secrets and the best place for a cocktail. Find out more with us - by Kyle Hitchmough How would you describe Hickory to somebody who might not understand what it’s about?... It’s been crudely described as a rib joint, but it’s more than that. We use Bangalow pork which is the best quality protein you can buy, but we’ve also balanced the offer with quite a good range of seafood, vegetarian food, we can look after people right through to the celiac’ s who we don’t get very often, but we’re more than capable. One of the more notable changes other than the décor and the interior has been the staff we have here. We have a whole new range of employees including a very good chef who’s doing great things for our output out of the kitchen and some really nice service-oriented front of house as well. 10.01.2022 The Butler Did It Butler + Grace Even during tumultuous times such as these, triumph can bloom from beneath the soil of adversity like a flower. Natasha Hardy has only owned Butler + Grace on Tamborine Mountain for a short while, having made the switch due to the changing market of COVID times, but already she finds herself flourishing anew. Find out more within by Kyle Hitchmough Can you explain what it is you offer?... We are a gift store that offers dried florals. A DIY floral bar, which includes dried florals, preserved florals, arrangements, workshops, we do table hire, we’re also doing gifting. Again, it’s all about celebrating around the table and gifting to others. How did you come to open this store? I’m an event producer, so I’ve been in the events industry for eighteen years. Due to COVID, I’ve done the pivot to opening up a retail store that focuses on the smaller events in your life. The gifting, the birthdays, the weddings, the smaller, more intimate events.
