21.01.2022 The Best Laid Plans of mice and men often go awry. We can fault Covid19. It’s at least partially true. But it doesn’t matter. Not really. The point is that our Succession Plan has come to a screeching halt. Better luck next time.... It’s OK. Truly. I would have missed everyone. Our Farmers, our RealFood Box Subscribers, our Rusty’s Supporters and our amazing, truly amazing, dedicated and beautiful volunteers. Interestingly, not only did the RF Box subscriptions more than compensate for the lost Rusty’s trade but our weekly ads in the Tablelander have brought new farmers. And some really great new volunteers have shown up. It’s a busy time, with all the western greens and veggies coming on, as the fruit starts to drop off. Lucy Friend has a great group of farmers and volunteers, providing the Tableland’s best near the old Fruit Bat location, just before Jonsson’s Market, northbound on the Cook Highway, on Wednesday afternoon. Their latest $30 Box looked really great. Check them out next Wednesday afternoon. We hope to be getting product from some of the same farmers soon, thanks to Lucy and all her dedicated volunteers. So ‘where to from here?’ One thing is clear. We can’t just shut down. Nor do we want to. Even though that has been the legitimate alternative, since the decision to find a successor was made a year ago this month, the process has served to reinforce what I already knew. After 40 years of awareness, nearly 2 years of research and preparation and 11 years delivering strictly local and mostly organically grown fresh food across the region weekly, RealFood Network has become quite important to many new found friends and neighbours, from Cairns to the Northern Beaches and beyond up the Cape, South past Innisfail and West, across the Tablelands and beyond. Amongst this group of friends and neighbours, RealFood Network is playing a central transacting role. An idea, for a solution to a community desire has become essential for too many people. We can’t just walk away. So we are all stuck with the status quo, until another transition opportunity, or alternative presents itself. I am enjoying it. Dealing with the sudden demand for more weekly RF Boxes, brought about by the virus, was challenging, even stressful for about the first three weeks. The upside is that efficiency has improved, we’ve engaged several new farmers and we see opportunities to further engage our RF Box Subscribers in the weekly process. One thing is clear. It is now more important than ever that anyone who wants what we have to continue into the future should look to improving their role(s). These can be improved in many ways: simple steadfastness, commitment, support, improved efficiency, distribution, product care, consideration of implications of our actions. For our farmers, community, families, children and future generations. Cheers Chris and Team

17.01.2022 This weekend we have the touted "superfood" blood oranges, organically grown from Malanda. Super high in vitamin C, potassium, dietary fibre, carotenoids, and polyphenols like their citrus cousins; and they have the added benefit of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are what makes blueberries blue and raspberries red. They are not present in other citrus, just blood oranges. It’s the anthocyanins that bestow the added health benefits to blood oranges that regular oranges do not have. In addition, blood oranges have the full profile of polyphenols and carotenoid molecules that are found in regular oranges that berries do not have. Super sweet.....super nutritious, available at RealFood, Rusty's Markets, this weekend.

13.01.2022 The Best Laid Plans of mice and men often go awry. Redux. So what? Does it mean we stop making plans? No. Of course not. By several criteria, RealFood Network is doing better than ever. Our farmer numbers are increasing. Our fresh fruit, vegetable and herb varieties and quality are increasing. Our organic and biodynamic product numbers are increasing. Our RealFood Box subscribers are increasing. Our Rusty’s supporter numbers are increasing. Our name recognition is increasi...ng. So what is to plan? Plenty. Our planning with farmers is constant. Daily at least. Keeping the largest selection of strictly local, fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs in Australia, available to our supporters year-around, does not happen by chance. And most of you know, there are times when we run out of one, or another item even IN season. Potatoes are a perfect example at present. And our best efforts to ‘stretch’ seasons come undone, as they have this year with Russian Garlic. So there is plenty of work to do with our farmers. Volunteers are another challenge. Though we have a terrific group right now. They are unloading the truck, as I type (7pm, Wednesday). And they, plus others, will be packing Subscriber Boxes first thing tomorrow. And we have lots of great help on the weekends, at present. But we need to keep putting the word out. There is always attrition. Rusty’s is picking up a little each week. The crowds are smaller. But we picked up probably 100 new customers, whose usual suppliers had temporarily (or permanently) pulled out of Rusty’s during the lock-down. We never left. And there were only 7 fresh food marketeers for a few weeks. People finding RealFood for the first time have kept coming back (in spite of the higher prices), for the quality, variety, service and product knowledge. Over the next several weeks, via Facebook and more so at Rusty’s and via communication with Subscribers, we will be looking to provide ideas where anyone interested in keeping this enterprise vibrant and responsive to farmer and supporter’s needs can assist. A heartfelt Thank You, to everyone. Our hope and intent is to build a program with enough strength and depth to ensure our children’s and their children’s access to the real food bounty of our region, as well as our farmers and their successors, access to a local market, outside the corporate paradigm. All The Best. Chris

10.01.2022 Colourful fruit and vegetables contain brain boosting essentials like phytonutrients. This is why it’s so essential to focus on eating colourful fruits and vegetables. The dark, deep reds, yellows, oranges, greens and blues mean these foods contain powerful anti-inflammatory, detoxifying antioxidants and energy-boosting, brain-powering molecules. 03.01.2022 It is TOMATO SAUCE SEASON. Every year, we make enough to last us until next season. And many of our farmers, particularly our Italian farmers, make an all-day family event, similar to their sausage making efforts. For the last few years, we have had enough excess to give away a few boxes, spread among our primary box hosts and volunteers. If you are not living on the Tablelands, you would not know we ran a very successful campaign for several months, with weekly advertisemen...ts for new farmers, in the Tablelander. The result was several new farmers and more new fresh local products, including new tomato varieties. To support our farmers, we often take pre-set quantities of various product, for which we pay their ‘ask’ price. So this year we have literally tonnes of tomatoes, which we will purchase, but not sell. This opens up an opportunity to share our good fortune with others fresh, organic and heirloom tomatoes of several varieties. These prices are open to anyone, via the processes described: Kilo Price Full Kilo 5 Kilos 10 Kilo Tuscan Sun $6 $5 $4 $3 Gross Lea $6 $5 $4 $3 Sylvania $6 $5 $4 $3 Neil’s Heirloom $6 $5 $4 $3 Leena’s Heirloom $6 $5 $4 $3 Roma $6 $5 $4 $3 Black Russian Roma $8 $7 $6 $5 Black Russian $8 $7 $6 $5 Heirloom Mix $14 $12 $10 $8 Les & Betty’s Grape $10 $9 $8 $7 Ross Cherry Mix $8 $7 $6 $5 There are 3 ways to purchase: 1) Any quantity.
