25.01.2022 Keep your work friends close, but no closer than 1.5m
23.01.2022 MEET HAYLEY Growing up I’ve always volunteered to help, even when I know I’ve bitten off more than I can handle it just gave me the incentive to try harder because pleasing people is a gift that’s open ended ( in my views anyway). I love going out of my way to help my participants feel better, happier and not so alone. I enjoy everyone’s company and get on well with pretty much everyone. I grew up never knowing my place in the world other than to know I’m here to help people and thanks to RLA I’m able to stand tall, do the job I love and walk away from each person knowing I’ve made there day better in some way or another.
23.01.2022 When the C.O.O sends you a video of herself signing her granddaughters afternoon tea it needs to be shared #IWD2020

21.01.2022 MEET LAUREN Originally I thought I was going to have a career in Audio Engineering, which is what I was studying at uni in Sydney. My anxiety made everything really bad and that’s when I decided I wanted to help other people in similar situations. I then became a Support Worker at RLA. RLA gave me the chance to help people who were studying and looking for employment. I help them gain literacy skills, employment skills, confidence, and much more. I also get to teach them music (guitar and singing), how to write songs and how to record music.

20.01.2022 It's so disheartening to hear that people with disability struggle to find gainful and meaningful employment. Which makes stories like this so much more inspiring. Congratulations to Clay on starting your own business and supporting yourself when others didn't. If you'd like to support a local business providing people with disability meaningful and gainful employment like and follow our page as we continually share great services.

17.01.2022 Continuing with NAIDOC week celebrations we share one of our favourite songs by Indigenous artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. At the time of his death Geoffrey was the most commercially successful Aborignal Australian musician, teaching himself multiple instruments from 4 years of age after being born blind. *Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should be aware that this video contains the image, voice and name of people who have passed away.*
17.01.2022 Nothing warms my heart more than getting to share Real Life success stories with our followers and this one is probably my favourite story since RLA started! M was one of our very first participants, and when he started with us he wasn't engaging at school and had not completed year 10. Our support worker Josh spoke to lots of different schools, one of them being Alesco, and it was agreed that M could do one term of year 11 and he would get his ROSA. Josh helped M engage wi...th the school and drove him every morning for the term. At the end of the term M decided he would like more support with the objective of finishing year 12! M has had quite a few setbacks along the way, but with more support workers coming on board with him including Deion, Adam and our C.O.O Justine we are so proud of M today, as a year 12 graduate! To M and his parents, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your journey and we can't wait to see how bright you shine in your next endeavour! See more
17.01.2022 A beautiful shot of the lake from one of our Support Workers who started a shift at 6:30 this morning. Real Life Assistants; because disability doesn't have office hours

17.01.2022 Hi for those that don’t yet know me my name is Jess Simpson I joined the RLA team as a casual working just weekends as the job that I was working in at another Organisation was affected by COVID in April 2020 and made the decision to come over as the Senior Individualised supports manager just a month ago. I’m a Wollongong girl and have lived here all my life. I was a Dancer growing up but found a passion for supporting people with a disability when I was a student Dance te...acher at the age of 14 teaching a group of amazing individuals all with disabilities, and that’s where my career path began. Since then I have worked in, Palliative care , Preschools as the 1:1 support, Group Homes, and respite facilities as a support worker. I’ve worked in DES and also facilitated in the Individualised supports team for another organisation. 1:1 support is something that I’m particularly passionate about. That’s why im so excited about my role here at RLA !!! So what’s my role and what do I do? I work alongside Sam CEO . I’m available to support all Staff within their roles particularly with complex participants and reviewing what happens in shifts and go through what’s working and what isn’t. I will work to make shifts more cohesive for both staff and participants, I do mentoring with Staff and Support team leaders. I will also be working closely on the Risk management and documentation within RLA I also do the Intakes of new participants Getting to Know me : I’m fanatical about the Colour pink but I'm not a girly girl. Im a volunteer Fire fighter and have been for 14 years highlight of my time in the RFS is that a photographer snapped a shot of me and my crew on a really bad day at the Green wattle fire and that photo was displayed to our surprise on the Opera House Sails. My favorite foods is any Hot breakfast foods annnnnddddd chocolate of course. Family and my close friends are the most important thing to me and I try to spend as much of my down time with them I look forward to working with each and everyone of you

08.01.2022 Let's Talk Coronavirus Safety at the shops! Firstly, it goes without saying that the safest option of home delivery isn't necessarily the best option as not only does it have a higher cost but it also stops us from getting a short break out of the house and we may not be able to receive all the items we need or choose their substitutes. Below is a few things we've found from the Big 2 supermarkets and some tips we've put together.... WOOLWORTHS: According to emails received by Woolworths subscribers they have taken the policy by Victorian Government and enforced mask wearing by staff in New South Wales Hot Spots and encouraging customers to do the same. Staff and customers across the country are being encouraged to wear masks whilst in store. Physical distancing and good hygiene are still being encouraged with Woolworths trialling Q Tracker to allow customers to see peak periods and plan ahead, giving peace of mind that the shops won't be packed and they won't be waiting outside. COLES: Coles are also encouraging the use of masks for staff and customers on top of regular physical distancing and hand hygiene. At this point in time they are recommending ordering online to pick up in store for customers unable to receive home delivery. This significantly reduces the time and contact you have within the store as you are only arriving to pick up groceries that have already been packed and paid for. GREAT TIPS: -Know exactly what you need before you leave home and try to write down what aisles you find your items in each shop. This will reduce time each shop as you will begin to know which aisles you don't need to walk down. -Have a handy bottle of sanitiser to clean your hands after you finish your shop. -Take your own baby wipes or antibacterial wipes for your trolley in case the front of store is out. -Try to go at a time that you know that shops aren't generally busy. (Personally I think 10am on weekdays is a great time, kids are at school, and those that are at in offices or on job sites haven't begun lunch breaks yet. ) Thanks for reading, we hope this has helped. 03.01.2022 "The environment is conducive to free thinking and everybody’s opinion is counted and listened to. It might not always been acted up but it’s always considered. You can just drop in whenever you want and see the CEO and COO. I’ve worked in many places and you wouldn’t even know the top peoples names and what they looked like. After 40 years retail it’s a refreshing change. Everything else is about the participants. It’s so good to just be able to help people and a few of the ...people I work with achieved some major goals and it just made me feel so happy. It’s self-gratification but so worth it. Sometimes when you start a shift the person is really down and suffering high anxiety and it’s really rewarding that at the end of the shift their spirits are lifted and they give you a hug and are so appreciative just for you being there. I’ve been married for 33 years and have 4 children and grandchild number 8 is on it’s way. Originally from Adelaide moving when I was 20 to the Illawarra where I have now lived for 33 years. I will work here until I retire. I’m not planning on going anywhere, I’ve found my dream job. I work with people aged 10 up to almost 60 and everything in between." See more
