17.01.2022 The talented and amazing team of mentors at Real Life Skills have been at it again, this time designing and creating some incredibly unique shirts. Art is often used as a form of communication of feelings from artist to viewer through certain external signs. Usually inspired by emotional experiences, they use their skill with words, paint, music, movement, etc. to embody their emotions in a work of art. You can encourage a persons self-expression through process-oriented art:... simply put, art that is based on exploration and allows different outcomes, rather than emulating a preconceived finished product. After all, the essence of art is expressing oneself. At Real Life Skills our mentors are experienced and well verse in utilising different methods to connect with participants one on one...the results?...amazing!

15.01.2022 Men’s Mental Health Month - MOVEMBER When someone has a mental health condition, it can impact on how they think, feel and behave. It may also impact on their physical health. Many people manage their mental health condition well and without it significantly affecting their work or life. We need to encourage each other to listen and share openly. For one of our Mentors - Riki, Mental Health is a topic he has a lot to say about, both as an individual who is passionate abou...t every person being aware of their mental health but also as someone who has been personally affected. Riki shares his story below Don’t let this smile trick you. We all suffer it some days or for many years. Mental health is no joke for anyone and the more we can talk about it and accept that as people we struggle with our mental wellbeing the better off we are. It’s a good reminder to start talking to your mates or family members when we are dealing with mental issues. I can confirm that you will feel percent better after talking to someone. I’ve come to a turning point in my life just recently that I hope is going to change my life. If it wasn’t for a special person I wouldn’t be here today. I don’t want no sympathy no one can change me it’s up to me. I hope this helps others to speak out love y’all. It ain’t weak to speak It’s ok not to be ok You don’t have to struggle in silence Sharing your story can be an opportunity to download your thoughts and feelings, help others by providing hope and encouragement, and also help break down the stigma around depression and anxiety.

02.01.2022 Last month at Real Life Skills we celebrated a number of birthdays, last week alone we had not one but TWO birthdays here in the office. The boys from our Lifespace group came together and surprised us with a delicious birthday cake. What a treat! Earlier in the month we also celebrated a participants birthday, he invited some of his Lifespace friends and mentors to get together for a BBQ at his house. This was something truly special to see as a number of our particip...ants had never been to a birthday party or engaged in a social setting at someone else house. For many children and adults on the autism spectrum social interaction can be a significant challenge and may require help in learning how to act in different types of social situations. They often have the desire to interact with others, but may not know how to engage friends or may be overwhelmed by the idea of new experiences. Getting the right support and information can help you in developing new friendships and making them long term fulfilling ones. Our Lifespace groups offer an opportunity for people of all ages to practice their social skills with each other and/or typical peers on a regular basis. Building up social skills with practice can help enhance participation in the community and support outcomes like happiness and friendships. We currently have multiple groups forming, if you are interested contact us today via email at [email protected] or call us 07 5451 0931 to discuss which group will be the best fit for you. 02.01.2022 This week is International Stress Awareness Week. Celebrated in the first week of November, International Stress Awareness Week is an awareness event that aims to shine a light on stress and mental health problems, as well as raise awareness and promote support services. Everyone has stress. Some stress is good for us. It helps us to respond to changes in life. Stress is our body’s way of protecting itself from harm. However, too much stress causes harm to our health and rela...tionships. Once we identify the causes of stress in our lives, we can begin to eliminate or reduce stress. Some tools that help with stress include: Develop coping skills for anxiety. Identify and let go of the things you cannot change. Exercise helps us to let go of built-up anxiety. Eating a balanced diet fuels our bodies so we’re able to better cope with the stress. This International Stress Awareness Week, think about the role that stress plays in your life. If you feel that you experience stress regularly, spend some time researching ways that can help reduce your stress, such as developing a routine to help you lessen your tension. Go for a walk, do some deep breathing, get some exercise or a massage, or take a long, relaxing bath.

02.01.2022 Love seeing our participants absolutely killing it in all aspects of life. https://fb.watch/1zBaYdD0A8/

02.01.2022 Today we are continuing on sharing our 2020 achievement and success stories as we quickly approach our first year of operating here at Real Life Skills. When Real Life Skills first came to life one of our main visions was to create a community. We wanted to provide a space where the people that walk through our doors not only have the opportunity to achieve more than they ever imagined possible, but an environment that helps to foster more meaningful and lasting friendships..., as well as a create a feeling of belonging. In August 2020, our Lifespace group came to life. Lifespace is our Social group initiative. These sessions created a space for people to come together to form friendships, have fun, hang out and talk about life...More importantly breaking down social anxieties and being able to feel comfortable opening up to discuss significant topics going on day to day. For some of our participants this was the first time experiencing social settings and meeting new people. As these sessions continued, the friendship began to form. At the beginning, the group was meeting up with our Mentors each week which quickly progressed to organising to see movies together, to being invited to their friends birthday parties. Most recently one of our participants Zac, turned 18! Some of our mentors and lifespace participants attended and helped him celebrate a massive milestone with him and his family. They all had the best night hanging out, having FUN. There was even live music, How cool is that! This was something so incredible to see as a number of our participants had never been to a birthday party or engaged in a social setting at someone else house before. This is why we do what we do! We understand that some social situations can be daunting but the great news is you don't have to go it alone. Every week the day is planned by the group, for the group. But it’s not just about the activity - It’s so much more than that! It is about the way we interact with each other. If you been wondering if our Life Space program is the right social initiative for you, contact us to have a chat. We really have created a unique space and we want to share it with you all. Contact us today via email at [email protected] or call us 07 5451 0931 to discuss which group will be the best fit for you. We'd love to hear from you.
