24.01.2022 From Radio National’s Saturday Extra - Jailing is Failing.

24.01.2022 AKA: elimination.

19.01.2022 The parliamentary inquiry into use of cannabis in Victoria is still accepting public submissions, which can be made online at vicparl.news/3nvATEt. The inquiry ...is considering current restrictions on the use of cannabis and whether they should be changed. It is also looking at ways to prevent young people and children accessing and using cannabis. See more

18.01.2022 Cannabis component cannabidiol (CBD) does not impair driving and is safe for those behind the wheel, an Australian-led study has found. This is the first study to illustrate the lack of CBD effects on driving and to also provide a clear indication of the duration of THC impairment (up to four hours). Our driving laws are completely unfair to medicinal cannabis patients and they need to be changed.

17.01.2022 Seriously? We're going to tax electric vehicles? While the UK is moving to ban petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, Victoria wants to follow SA and actually provide a disincentive to getting cleaner and greener vehicles?

17.01.2022 Civil liberties groups are asking Victoria Police to exercise restraint and give warnings instead of fines as much as possible. They cite that the fear of fines may have an impact on contact tracing efforts.

15.01.2022 Disadvantaged Victorians are twice as likely as other Australians to be unable to quarantine during the pandemic due to insecure work, putting them at increased risk of contracting COVID-19, a report has found.

15.01.2022 Great news out of Tasmania today that the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has cleared the upper house.

15.01.2022 The New South Wales government has unveiled a road map to attract $32 billion worth of private investment in renewable energy infrastructure with a focus on pumped hydro in regional areas. Victoria has heaps of suitable sites for pumped hydro! Your play, Mr Andrews.

13.01.2022 Violence and abuse against any race or gender is unacceptable. Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember our transgender siblings who have been murdered, died by suicide or from a drug overdose. Ygender have have put together a virtual event for 4.00pm today https://www.facebook.com/events/1051443805299436... According to the Australia Talks National Survey, the majority of Australians (59 per cent) agree that "people should be referred to by the gender pronoun they identify with, even if it differs from the one assigned to them at birth." Every level of government should reflect this attitude and commit to actions which provide a safe, healthy, connected and respectful community for all.

13.01.2022 After pressure from crossbench MP’s and the legal community, the Government has now backed down on the draconian powers they sought in the much discussed Covid19 Omnibus Bill. Clause 252 has been removed, which effectively scraps the proposed preventative detention powers given to authorised officers.

12.01.2022 From January 1st, 2021, young people who, for whatever reason find themselves in state care, will no longer be forced to move out on their 18th birthday. Seven months after Fiona Patten MP presented legislation to extend care to 21, the Victorian Government has pledged $75M in the budget to support young people to stay with their existing kinship or foster carer families up to 21 years of age, or transition to an independent living arrangement. Research by Deloitte Access Ec...onomics shows this will: Halve homelessness among this group Increase higher education participation by 2.5 x Decrease arrests and hospitalisation Reduce alcohol and drug dependence, from 15.8 per cent to 2.5 per cent Reduce costs of delivering additional government services Improve mental and physical health outcomes, reduce intergenerational disadvantage and an increase in social connectedness. This will change lives.

11.01.2022 Stay vigilant. We're one dickhead away from disaster.

11.01.2022 If you're a minor party candidate and want to get elected, Glenn Druery will help you ... for a price. His 'cash for votes' racket undermines our democracy and we're taking a stand.

11.01.2022 GPs, paramedics and addiction support service workers say they are 'stretched to the limit' when responding to and treating people living with an addiction. "We do our best but everyone is stretched to the limit and everyone is working separately, that's the problem," says paramedic Shelly Tennant. If healthcare workers wrote the blueprint for treating people with addiction, what would the system look like?

08.01.2022 Yesterday's budget included a $5.4 billion dollar Big Housing Build, billed as a ‘landmark investment in social housing. Brendan Coates and Kat Clay from the Grattan Institute discuss why social housing is good stimulus.

08.01.2022 As a result of Fiona Patten MP’s private members Bill, the Victorian Government has conceded that there are issues with the current regime of testing for the presence of THC in roadside drug testing, which treats medicinal cannabis patients like criminals. An "implementation group", overseen by Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll, will report by December 18 on ways that medicinal cannabis patients won't be disadvantaged simply by taking their medication.

08.01.2022 The State Government is turning a blind eye to discrimination so they don't upset the apple cart with the Federal Government. Right now, non-Christian applicants for taxpayer-funded school counsellor jobs are still being denied employment on the grounds of their faith. Imagine this scenario, kids are about to play a game of cricket at lunchtime, but before the teams get picked, one kid says: "I don't want any Muslims or Jews on my team, can all the Christian kids put their ha...nd up?" We wouldn't allow this to happen, would we? That child would be marched straight to the principal's office. So why do we allow this kind of discrimination to happen when schools are hiring student support workers?

08.01.2022 Yes Fiona Patten MP! During today's debate, Upper House Labor MP Shaun Leane said we are ready to work with her on this particular issue and find a way. We are going to work with Ms Patten to make sure people are not disadvantaged by taking medication.

07.01.2022 The Victorian Government has today introduced legislation to outlaw cruel and bigoted practices that seek to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Fiona Patten MP says "conversion therapy is fraudulent, dangerous, and inflicts immeasurable harm on its victims. The emails my office is receiving in opposition to this bill are abhorrent and don't warrant a response." Due to a backlog of Bills in the Upper House, it won't be passed until early next year.

05.01.2022 The solar panel rebate scheme will get a boost in next week's Victorian Budget as part of a $797 million package to fund Victoria’s clean energy transition. The Victorian Government and renewable energy company Neoen have also unveiled plans to build a 300MW battery, which will be the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.

03.01.2022 It's clear that what we're doing isn't working. Two former judicial officers explain why our criminal justice system needs a strong rethink.

03.01.2022 So far, government efforts to support the highly strained housing system were swift and effective, but more work is needed to reduce the effects of recession on individual and household rental stress.
