25.01.2022 This is not surprising. Many people are surprised to learn that sleep is not a time when our body switches off. It is a time of brain repair and organisation - a crucial time required to keep our brains and our bodies healthy. It should be a priority in everyone’s lives - and the importance of implementing good routines from birth cannot be underestimated!... https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//200204094726.htm
25.01.2022 In the first study of its type, researchers conclude that even a brief shift in dietary habits can alleviate the symptoms of depression in young adults. The findings offer hope, but more work is needed. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326593.php
22.01.2022 Deficiencies of nutrients critical for brain function may be a significant contributing risk factor for psychiatric conditions such as suicide and stress-related disorders. Omega 3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain, are not able to be made by the body and must be obtained from the diet. In civilian populations, studies have suggested that low fish consumption is associated with an increased risk of completed suicide and greater suicidal ideation. 21.01.2022 This is not new news. But it is excellent to see the microbiome making its way into mainstream medicine!
21.01.2022 Unfortunately, our Townsville clinic is currently at capacity. Due to the comprehensive nature of the functional medicine approach, in order to provide the best quality service to our current patients, we are unable to take new patients at this stage. We are busily working behind the scenes to adapt our business processes to enable us to work with a greater number of people. If you are interested in working with our practitioner team and would like to be placed on our wait l...ist, please complete the form below. As the needs of our patients change and positions open, we will contact you in order to arrange an initial consultation. We apologise for the inconvenience. https://forms.gle/HK8GHKsBtFSe3mp76
21.01.2022 The thing I love most about functional medicine is that diagnoses are really irrelevant. We treat the person, not the disease. Two people may share a ‘label’, but two people are never the same. This study discusses the meaningless nature of psychiatric diagnoses:... This study provides yet more evidence that the biomedical diagnostic approach in psychiatry is not fit for purpose. Perhaps it is time we stopped pretending that medical-sounding labels contribute anything to our understanding of the complex causes of human distress or of what kind of help we need when distressed. #patientcentred #individualised #medicinedonedifferently https://neurosciencenews.com/meaningless-psychiatric-diagn/
20.01.2022 Sorry I have been a little quiet on the posting front. A couple of weeks ago now I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to present a short seminar to the Mental Health Professionals Network for Veteran’s Health Week on Nutritional Psychiatry, my all-time favourite topic. It was exciting to have the opportunity to get the research out there and now that it is over, I am going to work on getting the research to the public!... I will be doing my best to keep adding articles supporting the link between diet, nutritional status and mental health. I am also opening this page as a forum in order to help bring the research on nutritional medicine to the public. Feel free to ask questions or PM and please share to help spread the word to those that need it most!
20.01.2022 I thought I saw a message from someone re the Bredesen Protocol, but I seem to have lost it. Please send it again if it was you Bec
18.01.2022 Work stress is the primary cause of stress in the lives of most adults and we have seen it continuing to escalate in intensity over the past few decades. It is estimated that 60% of employee absences can be traced to psychological problems that are due to work stress and surveys have shown that around 42% of us have left a position due to a stressful workplace. 17.01.2022 There are so many life factors which contribute to our overall health and well-being. Functional medicine aims to assist all of them . #lifemedicine #happyheart

16.01.2022 Dietary Modification for the Treatment of Chronic Pain Research continues to gain momentum linking diet and nutritional status to multiple chronic diseases. This review examines the link between dietary composition and chronic pain. ... There are some obvious links - It is not surprising that dietary change leading to weight normalisation can improve pain in situations such as, for example osteoarthritis, but does the link run deeper? Changing dietary composition can alter biochemical pathways of inflammation and oxidative stress, change the gastrointestinal microbiome composition and affect neurotransmitter profiles, which could potentially reduce pain independent of weight changes. Optimising diet may also help prevent the development of opioid tolerance and the side effects of pain medication such as constipation. Not surprisingly, the recommended diet is similar to that for mental illness - focused on reducing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress - drivers of both conditions. Looking forward to clinical trials in this area You can download the full text PDF here: https://www.researchgate.net//324689887_Food_pyramid_for_s
16.01.2022 How powerful are non-pharmaceutical treatments? Healthy behaviors such as physical activity, eating a balanced diet, and reducing alcohol intake are well-established as key to type 2 diabetes prevention, but a new meta-analysis shows just how dramatic the combined effect of adopting all of these behaviors can be, reducing the risk of developing the disease by as much as 75% and substantially reducing poor outcomes among those who have diabetes. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/918018
11.01.2022 A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables is known to benefit the human body in so many ways. Now a new study suggests that it may also play a role in lessening various menopause symptoms. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases//02/200219124232.htm

05.01.2022 Fabulous article written by the Institute of Functional Medicine discussing the best nutritional and botanical options for COVID-19 based on the best available evidence. While there are currently no specific vaccines or uniformly successful treatments for COVID-19, our recent article serves to assess the scientific plausibility of promising prevention approaches and therapeutic (nutraceutical and botanical) interventions and then to offer clinical recommendations. This artic...le is written specifically for licensed healthcare practitioners. I recommend you seek advice from an appropriately trained health practitioner as to the best treatment plan for your specific needs : https://hubs.ly/H0pjZQL0
02.01.2022 When most people think about mental illness, they think about the brain and neurotransmitters. New research, however, has identified numerous systemic changes as being potential contributors, consequences and/or therapeutic targets for treatment. This article is going to look a little closer at just one of these factors - inflammation. Studies have shown that around 50% of people with depression have higher levels of inflammatory markers in their blood compared to people without depression. 01.01.2022 A great little article from Gina Janelle Howland at the Food and Mood Centre, Deakin University, discussing the potential of dietary treatments for PTSD. And so exciting to see Deakin leading the way developing clinical trials in this area. https://foodandmoodcentre.com.au//ways-to-conquer-ptsd-wh/
