16.01.2022 RIG would like to wish all members and supporters a very merry Christmas. The boathouse is open every day over the holidays, including Christmas Day. Get on down there and see how we're progressing.

12.01.2022 RIG is delighted to let you know that the Boathouse will be re-opening to visitors on Saturday 5 June from 10:30! Assuming no changes to regulations, we expect to be open every day except Wednesdays and Thursdays to the end of June when the situation will be re-assessed. There will be a limit of 4 visitors at a time. Look forward to seeing you.

11.01.2022 A great effort for the Mayorals Bushfire Fund over the recent long weekend, with the help of everyone all over the island and tourists, the Boathouse Bazaar managed to raise the amount of $851.75 !!! which will be paid directly into the fund. Thank you to everyone that supported the fund raiser !!

09.01.2022 Yesterday was Fathers' Day but a lucky group spent it wandering around Kangaroo Island following sometimes esoteric clues to answer questions and collect a few things along the way. Yup, RIG's infamous car rally was on again. This year the journey was from American River to Kingscote via the less traveled route. A good time was had by all with everyone reaching the destination successfully. Thanks to Mal and Daelene our MCs and all who lent a hand in organising the event. Where will it be in 2021??

09.01.2022 RIG is sorry to have to tell you that the Boathouse at American River will be closed to visitors for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19. We'll be getting on with a few things behind closed doors though! Hope to be back soon.

09.01.2022 FLINDERS RETURNS! In 2016 a large log was discovered buried in the beach at American River by the builders of the retaining wall outside the RIG Boathouse and Deck café. The log is about 2 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and lies at right angles to the shore, sloping towards the waterline. We know it is a type of log that was used for early wooden boat building, and this log was clearly cut down by axe. But here the mystery thickens: it has a step, or notch, cut at exactly... mid-length on the top surface, in which a flat stone had been embedded with tar. We asked: Who cut this step? And - are there other logs like this? In 2018 Dr Ian Moffat of Flinders University undertook a ground-penetrating radar survey of the beach area and yes, there were radar signals indicating several other shapes - possibly logs - parallel to the first, at regular intervals. Was this a shipbuilding ‘yard’ at some stage? How long ago? Could it even date back to the 19th century? To answer all these questions a team from Flinders University will be in American River from Tuesday 21 to Friday 24 July to dig at the site and uncover its mysteries. Many thanks to Sealink for providing discounted travel for the team - one staff member and 5 postgraduate students which will be led by Professor Wendy van Duivenvoorde of the Department of Maritime Archaeology History, Archaeology & Geography. And so, Flinders Returns! The RIG Boathouse will be open all of that week and visitors are welcome. The photos show Tony and Ian King discussing the log; and the "step" in the log. Who knows what will be discovered!? See more

09.01.2022 We got a new flag! Thanks Rebekha. And thanks to all those who visited our stall at the Kingscote show.

08.01.2022 And so we say farewell to Cath who has been the face of The Deck Cafe since it opened. The Deck will be closed for a few days before re-opening under new management. All the best for the future, Cath.

06.01.2022 RIG is still open as normal and welcoming visitors. The adjacent Deck Cafe is also trading as normal. We encourage visitors to come and see us at The Wharf, American River. Our guides are running tours of the boathouse and ready to answer your questions. Come on down and see us - KI needs your support at this tricky time.

06.01.2022 Fairing and chamfering the frames soon the planking begins !!

05.01.2022 RIG is happy to announce the first Boat House Bazaar for 2020. 25-26-27 January at the wharf. Starting about 10:00 each day. All profits go to Bushfire relief funds. Souvenirs - books - whatever. See you there.

02.01.2022 Day 1 of the archaeological dig to find and evaluate the famous logs. Success already as one large log is revealed complete with metal nail in it.
