25.01.2022 4 weeks ago a fire ripped through the top floor of our home. We were (unintentionally) uninsured so we've demolished the kitchen, removed the debris and generally cleared the space oursleves all in FOUR weeks. Here is a video of our progress...

04.01.2022 Its been some time since I've recorded my thoughts and the progress at 102 Glenhaven Road. End of School, Christmas, New Year, Exhaustion etc etc - you know how it is ? The family has spent time organising over the past 8 weeks. By "organising", I guess I mean sorting what's saveable and throwing away things that aren't When the fire happened, my first thought was to save EVERYTHING (for those who know me well, yes I'm a sentimental hoarder). I wasn't ready to throw AN...YTHING out so it all went into packing boxes - soot, ash and all. I didn't have the emotional muscles to sift through our treasured personal things initially but as 2021 approached, I needed to put my big girl face on and tackle the job..... Ruined photos, destroyed school books and drawings the girls did when they were little, burnt mementos of special times past - these were all the things I knew would be so very hard to discard. The things I found hardest though were letting go of my Mum's things, and looking through my 'sacred drawers'. I have several drawers in my bedroom where I hold amongst other things, our passports, but also items that have the absolute most significant meaning to me. Things I want to pass on to Ella, Lara & Sian The Bibles the girls' paternal grandparents gave them, locks of hair from their first hair cuts, my own Dad's first pay slip........ regardless of the state of these things; they're irreplaceable so burnt edges, soot stains and all - they will be preserved. Fair to say though - whilst I have started the task - it a huge job so I'll be sorting for some time yet. My motto this year is: "ANTICIPATION, NOT TREPIDATION". I've got no bloody idea what 2021 holds but I'm banking on it being much better than 2020 . I am looking forward to it with excitement and anticipation not worry and trepidation.

03.01.2022 Its been several weeks since I last posted. I think, like many Aussies who suffered from "CoVid 19 fatigue", we've suffered from "THE FIRE" fatigue. The girls and I needed to think, talk and do other things for a while. We needed to focus on making our new home - aka downstairs, into a great living space rather than working continually in the fire damaged zone. So, as at today, all the remaining gyprock has been stripped with the exception of one wall in the kitchen (which... separates this area from the garage) which has been badly damaged. We have installed acrow props to secure the roof so the burnt out roof trusses can be safely removed. We have begun to work on a project plan with the help of Google, YouTube and common sense! We have costed up replacing the roof trusses and LVL beams ourselves (aren't you impressed - I am learning construction terminology!) Its more than a little scary thinking about doing something that has such major structural impacts so I've also had a professional building company take a look too - just waiting on his quote. I've also allowed myself the luxury of thinking about the new interior lay-out, finishes and styling of the upstairs area. I know its a long way off but its nice to dream! See more
