18.01.2022 UPDATE - RECREATIONAL FISHERS CALL FOR IMMEDIATE BAN ON COMMERCIAL KINGFISH SLAUGHTER RecFish SA continues to represent recreational fishers in their calls to see immediate action to save the spawning aggregations of Yellowtail Kingfish (YTK). RecFish SA has contacted PIRSA and the Ministers office, with original feedback being that there are no concerns and the current netting practices are 'sustainable'.... In a follow up to these claims, RecFish SA Chairperson Mick Wilson, requested the latest stock assessment from PIRSA - see response from PIRSA below. ‘PIRSA is currently assessing the recent catches of kingfish and is monitoring the local market, relative to typical fishing patterns that occur at this time of the year for this species. We are discussing the current situation with the commercial sector and will discuss this at the next MRFAC meeting with the recreational sector.’ RecFish SA will continue to push the position, which is a representation of the feedback and concerns that have been raised to us by recreational fishers, that there must be an immediate ban on netting for YTK, and a commercial daily limit of 3 fish, bringing us inline with the rest of the nation who have already banned netting of this iconic species.

13.01.2022 A man has been caught by Fisheries officers with over 100 undersize crabs. On 1 November, Fisheries Officers saw a man at Thompson’s Beach emptying his esky o...nto the tidal flats after returning from crabbing. It is alleged the 49-year-old man from Davoren Park had a total of 126 blue swimmer crabs, 124 of which were undersize. The daily bag limit is 20 per person. The man’s esky and crabs were seized. The man is expected to face court at a later date, where he could face fines of up to $20,000 plus an additional penalty of five times the commercial value of the illegally taken crabs.

12.01.2022 The summer holidays are a fantastic time for South Australians to get out on the water and try their hand at fishing. For anyone dropping a line it's important ...that you follow the rules so we can have sustainable fisheries in the future. Some of our current penalties are nearly 30 years old and the fishing industry have been calling out for heavier penalties for rogue fishers who break the law. Today at West Beach boat ramp I announced we would be increasing fines for fishing offences to better represent community expectation. For more information head to: https://www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing/recreational_fishing And download the ‘SA Fishing’ app in the app store.
11.01.2022 #BREAKING Foreshore beaches closed in Port Lincoln as spill investigated. Update 8pm 26/11: An SA EPA spokesperson has advised that their investigations have r...evealed that treated wastewater, accidentally discharged from a vessel moored at Port Lincoln, appears to have dissipated. The EPA has no environmental concerns, however local beaches have been closed pending water quality test results. The City of Port Lincoln Council is asking the community to not swim or fish from any beaches along the Lincoln foreshore to the Kirton Point jetty, and any other areas sign-posted while the SA Environment Protection Agency and SA Health investigates. "We don't want people on the sand, in the water and we don't want people fishing," said council CEO Matthew Morgan. "We've got teams working along those beaches putting up signage as we speak... and we'll be in contact with SA Health and the EPA but they're doing samples in those areas," he said. SA_EPA shared a post on Twitter just after 8.30pm last night about their investigation into, "the discharge of approx. 26 cubic metres of sewage from a bulk carrier moored at Port Lincoln." More to come.
