24.01.2022 Fishing clubs are the lifeblood of many WA communities, bringing fishers together socially to learn, have a great time and, of course, catch a few fish. Cockburn Power Boats Club (CPBC) is one of those clubs which is fabulously-run and offers members many benefits including five club-owned launching ramps. If you’re looking to join a metro club, be sure to head to CPBC’s annual Open Day this Saturday from 10am to 4pm.... Click the link for more info: https://bit.ly/3387Gb5

23.01.2022 Summer is on the way and the flats fishing is already beginning to fire We’re already starting to see plenty of yellowfin whiting and flathead attacking lures in the shallows at our favourite estuaries and rivers. From the Swan River, Peel-Harvey Estuary or Leschenault Estuary, the quality flats fishing should only continue to get better as the weather warms during 2020-21’s La Niña event.... Last week, Recfishwest’s Aaron Moses and Mike Minutillo joined Tackle West at its whiting popping information night recently to talk all things whiting. If you missed the info session, head to our I Love Fishing website for tips on how to catch more yellowfin whiting on the flats https://bit.ly/3oOTBbz Steve Hart and Han Yeoh

23.01.2022 A new dinghy, trailer and outboard for simply catching a salmon and entering it into the 20201 Salmon Slam. Beau Gee, of Mt Barker, was presented the 3.5m Seejay aluminium dinghy, powered by a six horse-power, four-stroke Honda outboard and trailer at the Recfishwest office today for simply catching a salmon. Beau was ecstatic that he’d scooped the Salmon Slam’s top-prize in a random draw from the almost 1,700 fishers who took part in the three-month, app-based fishing c...ompetition. I’ve always wanted a boat but you know how it is it’s one of those things that comes after a house and a new car so I guess this was pretty good shortcut, Beau said. 23.01.2022 If you’re fishing in new waters over the school holidays, make sure you are across State and Commonwealth marine parks zone rules. The marine park mapping tool on Recfishwest's smartphone fishing app can help you ensure your fishing activities are within the marine park fishing rules and it doesn't need mobile phone reception to work. The GP- responsive feature helps you fish stress-free and know exactly where the marine park zones are located and what fishing activities you... are allowed to do in each of them. The Recfishwest fishing app is available to download on to your phone for free on the app store and on Google Play. For general info about marine parks in WA and where they are located visit the Australian Marine Parks website and the Marine Parks and Reserves page on the @Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia website. Read more about the marine park mapping feature on our app and how it can help you be across all the marine park zones: https://bit.ly/33plz3U We wish you good fishing over the holidays and hope you get amongst them!

22.01.2022 Another year, another amazing Troutfest! It was great to have hundreds of freshwater fishers join us at Drakesbrook Weir, near Waroona, this morning to get their hands dirty and feet wet while hand-releasing thousands of rainbow and brown trout. Troutfest’s strong community support highlights how anglers place such a high value on the Peel and South West regions’ freshwater fisheries.... Today wouldn’t have been possible without the Shire of Waroona, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD, Alcoa, Whitey's Tackle & Camping, SHIMANO Australia Fishing Anaconda Bunbury, SHIMANO Australia Fishing and of course, all of you who’ve helped release the trout! Keep an eye out for more coverage from this morning’s Troutfest, including more of JLG Photographics photos, on Monday!

21.01.2022 If you haven’t fished Kununurra, there’s one million reasons why you should barramundi! Today, Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley AM revealed 200,000 more juvenile barra would be released into Lake Kununurra through the stocking program before Christmas. It will be a momentous occasion once the fish are released, lifting the total number of barra fingerlings stocked into Lake Kununurra since 2013 beyond one million fish. Seriously, how good is that?... Kununurra is home to amazing fishing, attracting avid fishers to the East Kimberley to try and land a barra like the one Curt McCartney is pictured with below. Lake Kununurra’s barramundi population is something Recfishwest is very proud of, given we’ve consistently pushed for barra stocking in this system for a number of years. Read about Kununurra's abundant barra stocks, which are literally on the town's doorstep, here https://bit.ly/2G4ZQqn

21.01.2022 More Western Australians are holidaying at home now more than ever. That’s why proposed fishing rule changes are important to address concerns widely voiced last year about the potential impact on local fish populations. In September last year, having been contacted by concerned community members, former Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley asked Recfishwest for advice about the appropriateness of the current State-wide possession limit.... In response, Recfishwest surveyed its members and talked to many key leaders in the regional fishing community to provide a series of recommendations to the former Minister. Based on the substantial feedback Recfishwest received, including from 875 members who responded to our survey, the message was clear protection of our fish stocks is best undertaken by implementing a range of measures rather than just changing the possession limit. Since we consulted with recfishers, the State Government have been broadly supportive of multiple recommendations we made. One of these includes the introduction of a ‘trip limit’ capping the amount of demersal fillets fishers can have in their 20kg possession limit at 10kg. However, WA’s recfishing community have made it clear that protection of our fish stocks will be best undertaken by implementing a range of measures, rather than just changing the possession limit. The new legislation is likely to be implemented by the end of June in time for the July school holidays. It will be reviewed in 12 months once data can be gathered to build up a better picture of if and how increased fishing activity is translating into more fish caught. Find out more about why Recfishwest supports temporary rule changes to protect vulnerable fish species around regional centres here: https://bit.ly/3yTsotj

20.01.2022 A trailblazing program to rejuvenate Cockburn Sound’s severely depleted seagrass beds is happening this weekend and it needs your help!! The OzFish Unlimited team are calling for more volunteers to join them at Cockburn Sound from tomorrow to Sunday to support the third annual Seeds for Snapper program. Selfless divers, families, boaties and recfishers are volunteering to hand-dispersing seagrass seeds to create much-needed nursery habitat for species such as pink snapper, ...squid and blue swimmer crabs! However, more volunteers particularly boat owners are needed for the free seeding day event at Cockburn Power Boats Club from 8am to 1pm on Saturday. Addressing Cockburn Sound’s severe seagrass loss is something Recfishwest takes very seriously, given how important Cockburn Sound is as a fishery and that healthy seagrass meadows maximise fishing opportunities. 14.01.2022 CHECK THIS OUT! Just a few hours ago we were stoked to be joined by some of the great and the good of the recfishing community and DPIRD’s Marine Finfish Hatchery team to release 10,000 yellowtail kingfish off South Mole at Fremantle. That’s a massive step forward for establishing an ongoing metro kingie stocking program and 10,000 more reasons to get excited about hooking into amazing sportfishing off Perth! Kingies are fast-growing these fish could be legal size within ...a year and they are hardy making them perfect for fish stocking. The State Government has backed in funding for kingie stocking for the next three years and adds to our ongoing barramundi, pink snapper, trout and marron stocking programs. Well-managed stocking programs create fish abundance and fantastic fishing experiences. Stocking really is king! 13.01.2022 Pink snapper spawning aggregations like this is what we’re continuing to fight to protect in Cockburn Sound from the Outer Harbour development. The Westport Taskforce which made the recommendations for the Outer Harbour development completely failed to answer this basic question in its multi-million dollar, three-year process: What impact will a new port in Cockburn Sound have on the Sound’s pink snapper stocks and fishing experiences? So we’re not stopping the fight fo...r the Sound and its habitat which supports the largest spawning aggregations of pink snapper in the West Coast Bioregion. We’re continuing to push Government to address the Taskforce’s shortcomings and make sure Cockburn Sound’s future as a marine habitat and the future of West Coast pink snapper is not put on the line. Thanks to Jamie Vogler, of The Nomads, for sending us the footage and thanks to him and the tens of thousands of you like us who care about Cockburn Sound. 12.01.2022 If you've never explored the South West's wonderful freshwater systems while fishing for rainbow or brown trout, then this weekend is an ideal time to give it a go! DPIRD have made this weekend, 3-4 October, a freshwater licence-free weekend meaning fishers don't need a licence to catch rainbow trout, brown trout and redfin perch. With no licence required, there isn't a better time than this Saturday and Sunday to wet a line in freshwater systems across the South West... and Peel regions and try your hand at freshwater fishing. The licence-free weekend coincides with our booked-out Troutfest event at Drakesbrook Weir tomorrow. Unfortunately, COVID-19 protocols have played their part in limiting the number of spots available at Troutfest, so we have had no choice but to restrict the numbers. However, if you have missed out on Troutfest this time, be sure to still get out and about to try catch a big rainbow or brown trout at one of the many great freshwater locations. Read our freshwater tips here https://bit.ly/2FVp9uC Declan Busher!

07.01.2022 From the launch of the State-wide FADs trial, to releasing more than 5,000 yellowtail kingfish off Freo, to a heap of new recfishing initiatives being announced by the Premier including new artificial reefs, as well as WA’s first suburban trout stocking program - 2019/20 has been a massive 12 months for the recfishing community. Earlier this week, we held our Annual General Meeting to celebrate 12 great months despite unprecedented challenges to the recfishing sector and industry brought by COVID-19. We continue to power forward and deliver many great initiatives that continue to make fishing even better and fight for recfishers on a number of big ticket issues. Check out what happened at our AGM and read our Annual Report here https://bit.ly/3nlExRm

John Tonkin College students are spending their time in the classroom, and also out of it, working to ensure black bream stocks in the Peel-Harvey Estuary remain abundant for many years to come. Led by the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council alongside Murdoch University and JTC, the ...Black Bream Project which is supported by Recfishwest is working to increase stewardship of our estuaries and teach kids that healthy rivers lead to healthy bream stocks. 02.01.2022 Great result for metro abalone fishers! Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley AM this morning announced an extension of the metro abalone season from four days to five. Thanks to careful management of the metro abs fishery and the State’s 17,500-plus licensed fishers sticking to the rules, the fishery has recovered sufficiently to allow the extra day. ... Licensed fishers can now catch abalone from Guilderton to Busselton across five Saturdays between 7am and 8am on these days: - 12 December. - 9 January. - 23 January. - 6 February. - 20 February. It’s always great to see a fishery management plan work and result in a quick change in the rules benefitting recfishers. But we’re not stopping here we will continue to look at more ways to improve your access to the Roe’s abalone as the stocks continue to improve including returning the bag limit to 20 and adding even more fishing days in the future.
