27.04.2022 2021 has been a challenging year for many. One highlight for me this year has been celebrating the past #50YearsOfRechenberg. I’ve had the break from reality by researching the company history, which has been an integral part of my life. Rechenberg is and always has been a family business, started 50 years ago by my Mum and Dad, Marion and Gordon, so I’d like to take this opportunity to reminisce a little about them. Dad was a prolific photographer, not in an artistic way, bu...Continue reading

17.04.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg Compared to when the control room in Bundaberg was first opened nearly 30 years ago, technology has substantially improved. In the early 90s, Rechenberg initially serviced the Wide Bay-Burnett region. As technology progressed from alarm panels reporting on PSTN phone lines to gradually being more IP based using cellular or ethernet connection, Rechenberg’s reach grew to the South-East corner of Queensland.... Now in 2021, the control room is entirely digital, Rechenberg monitors thousands of clients throughout Australia and New Zealand, and deal internationally on a daily basis. With advancements in technology, the world is getting much smaller, and it is becoming easier to communicate both nationally and internationally. The scope of what Rechenberg monitors has also changed significantly compared to the 90s. Previously only monitoring alarm systems, Rechenberg now monitors IoT devices, which are any technological device with an internet connection, and employs video verification, in which a control room operator verifies the authenticity of an alarm by viewing live CCTV footage. Rechenberg also collaborates with major partners to develop individualised products and services. With changes in technology moving so fast, we believe in going where others have not and have them follow, as no one has told us it can’t be done. Pictured are some of the locations of Rechenberg customers across Australia and New Zealand.

29.03.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg 18 years ago today, on the 9th of November 2003, Gordon Rechenberg passed away due to his severe emphysema. A few years before Gordon passed away, Gordon’s son, Michael Rechenberg, asked if Gordon had ever spoken to doctors about getting a lung transplant. Gordon said No...I’ve lived longer than I thought I would ever live. I’ve met two grandkids I never thought I would ever meet. I’ve had a pretty good innings really, and there’s someone out there that ...will need it more than I do. In a memoir Gordon wrote in his 60s, he said In between asthma attacks, pleurisy and pneumonia, I lived life to the fullest. When I wasn’t sick, I really enjoyed life. Gordon Rechenberg 1939 - 2003

16.03.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg In 2003, Rechenberg embarked on their most ambitious project - relocating into what was previously the ambulance station at 7a Maryborough Street, enabling them to expand their capacity more than ever before. The original building was built in 1913 and was rebuilt in the 1970s. To ensure it was suitable for all of Rechenberg’s requirements, the building underwent a major renovation with the control room being purpose-built to Australian standards. This al...lowed Rechenberg to be one of the few Grade A control rooms in Australia and allowed Rechenberg to monitor Australia-wide from Bundaberg. Pictured is the old ambulance station in 1971, construction on the control room, the new signage, and the finished building.

24.02.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg In 1993, Rechenberg Security and Locksmiths entered their second foray into electronic security with the supply, installation and monitoring of alarm systems via their 24/7 Control Room at 20 McLean Street. This Control Room enabled Rechenberg to expand their reach further than ever before. Previously, when operating as Rely Security, they were limited to monitoring security devices in Bundaberg due to the technology at the time. With the new Control Room..., they had the capacity to monitor alarms throughout Queensland, and eventually, all of Australia. In 2001, eight years after opening the Control Room, Rechenberg ventured into new territory, opening a security branch in Brisbane. Unlike the Bundaberg branch, the Brisbane branch did not offer locksmithing services and purely focused on security services. The opening of this branch enabled Rechenberg to provide a full range of security products and services Australia-wide. Pictured is Gordon Rechenberg at the Control Room in 1994.

18.02.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg In 1992, after over 20 years of trading, 'Lock, Sales & Service' renamed to 'Rechenberg Locksmiths'. With this change of name came a new logo, which is when the iconic Rechenberg shield was established. In 1993, 'Rechenberg Locksmiths' renamed to ‘Rechenberg Security and Locksmiths’ with the opening of our security division.

30.01.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg In 1988, at 17 years of age, Michael Rechenberg began his locksmith apprenticeship at Lock, Sales & Service. Michael was always interested in locksmithing and wanted to be a locksmith just like his father, Gordon. At just 9 years of age, Michael successfully picked his first lock, which Gordon mounted on a plaque.... Michael finished his apprenticeship in 1993.

21.01.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg After Gordon Rechenberg spent some of the 1960s working as a Jackaroo in Western Queensland, his health began declining and he moved to Hervey Bay. In his time in Hervey Bay, he met and then later married Marion Ferris. In the late 1960s, they started a mobile drapery business in Hervey Bay then moved to Biggenden. In 1970, Gordon’s health worsened, as his asthma developed into severe emphysema and chronic bronchitis and had to give up his drapery busines...s. Doctors had advised Gordon that one of his lungs were in such bad condition that it would be best to remove it. Gordon did not proceed with the surgery, and was told that he wouldn’t be able to work again and would need to go on a disability pension. Gordon didn’t take the doctors’ advice as he was always actively working with his hands. This wasn’t the first time Gordon was recommended to have a lung removal surgery. At just 7 years old Gordon was extremely sick and spent several weeks in hospital. Soon after his release from hospital, he saw a chest specialist in Melbourne, who advised him to undergo the surgery. After much deliberation, his parents decided against the surgery. In a memoir Gordon wrote in the early 2000s reflecting on his childhood, he said I am sure if I had the operation, I would not be writing today. In 1971, after declining the second lung removal surgery, a discussion began between Gordon and his cousin Alwyn, who was a locksmith in Geelong. Alwyn suggested that Gordon try locksmithing, as it was not overly heavy or strenuous work. Gordon took on Alwyn’s advice, and Alwyn sent Gordon locksmith ledger books, a mobile key machine, and some basic locksmithing tools. From then on, Gordon taught himself how to be a locksmith, through trial, error and experience. Photos from left to right: Gordon and Marion Rechenberg, Gordon’s mobile draper business in Hervey Bay, Michael Rechenberg and Alwyn at a family reunion in 2018, and some of the locksmith ledger books Alwyn gave to Gordon.

14.01.2022 If you live in the Brisbane area, you should start thinking about giving your security a boost for both your home and business, as inner city Brisbane is now the crime hotspot of Queensland. According to the 2018-2019 Queensland Crime Report, Brisbane’s inner city had the second highest crime rate, beaten only by the Queensland outback. Over 41,000 crimes were reported last financial year, which is a whopping 9% increase from the year prior. Rates of property offences, home ...burglaries, business burglaries and stolen vehicles have also risen dramatically, and are the leading forces behind this crime increase. With the correct security measures in place, your home and business can be protected against Brisbane's recent surge in crime.

14.01.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg Over the next few years, Lock Sales & Service moved several times. In 1979, Lock Sales & Services moved from 15 Woondooma Street to 33 Woongarra Street. Seven years later, Lock Sales & Service purchased their own premises at 20 McLean Street.... Over the combined 25 years at these premises, Lock Sales & Service heavily invested in modern and efficient machinery imported from around the world. This ensured that the company kept abreast of technology, and that Bundaberg had the same standard of security available as the capital cities.

Bundaberg, Gordon Rechenberg and Security turned out to be a good combination. The Rechenberg’s quickly settled into their new home, continuing their locksmithing business underneath their Queenslander home at Marsh Street in Bundaberg North. Gordon wanted to be the very best in his field, so he continued studying and reading locksmi...th ledger books. Reflecting on the early days, Gordon would tell you that most people didn’t know what a locksmith was and many people went to bed with the front door not only unlocked, but during summer, wide open. 01.01.2022 #50YearsOfRechenberg 1971 was an exciting year. Not only did Gordon get his locksmith business up and running, but it was also the birth of his youngest son, and Rechenberg's Managing Director, Michael. In these early years of Rechenberg, then known as Gordon J. Rechenberg Locksmith, Gordon would travel from Biggenden to regional shows throughout Queensland in his Holden ute. Gordon also visited Bundaberg, Mundubbera, Gayndah and Eidsvold and posted ads in the local newspaper... for when he would be in town and where to find him. As Gordon’s business was entirely mobile at this time, he relied on his mobile key machine, which was gifted to him by his cousin Alwyn, who was a locksmith in Geelong. Gordon also made his own tool box to go with his mobile key machine, which we still have today. Originally, Gordon bought a lot of his stock from Alwyn. As the business continued to grow, Gordon opened an account with a Queensland Locksmith Supplier, J Larsen, in 1972, who we still use today. 23.12.2021 #50YearsOfRechenberg The Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (MLAA) has been the peak body of the locksmithing industry in Australia and New Zealand for more than 35 years. Before the MLAA was incorporated as a National body in 1982, the Queensland branch was known as the Queensland Master Locksmiths’ Association. To become a member of this organisation, a trade test had to be completed to show you were a competent locksmith. ... Gordon Rechenberg was the first locksmith in Queensland to pass the trade test on his first attempt and be granted membership of the Queensland Master Locksmiths’ Association. Gordon later became vice-president of the Queensland branch of the MLAA. Michael Rechenberg completed his trade test in the early 2000s and is currently the Queensland Director of the MLAA.
