21.01.2022 Flu Vaccines- Drive in clinic and eligibility. The experts are urging all those over 65 years old to get their flu vaccine as soon as possible. We have the ...free government vaccines for over 65s. For everyone else aged between 6 months to 64 years old we have private flu vaccine $20. Unfortunately for those under 65yrs with chronic illness and primary school children who normally qualify for a free vaccine, the government has not released the free vaccines yet. We can give you a private vaccine for $20 now, or put you on a list to wait for the government vaccines to be released. Please stay in your car, call us, have your upper arm exposed. We will come up to your car wearing masks, vaccinate you. Please stay in your car for 15 minutes before leaving. Bring your own popcorn. You can pay for the private vaccines by phone. All phone and skype consults are now being Bulkbilled. Good availability, many same day urgent appointments available.

21.01.2022 Drive in COVID-19 testing clinic We are now testing people with an acute sore throat, cough and fever as per state guidelines. Testing is bulkbilled to medicare. Social distancing and the border restrictions have been a tremendous success. It has meant we are now confident there is no community transmission of COVID-19 in Esperance. However as restrictions are lifted and our social life returns, we want to be sure that the virus doesn’t pop-up and start spreading silently ...through our community. Despite the border restrictions, there are still people coming into Esperance from interstate and even from abroad due to various travel exemptions. Therefore we have gained permission from the Chief Public Health Officer to provide symptomatic testing in Esperance, similar to clinics already in operation across the state such as in Albany and Kalgoorlie. COVID-19 usually presents as a mild respiratory illness, with a sore throat, a cough, a fever or all three. It sometimes presents as diarrhoea or loss of taste and smell. We will be testing a few people with acute respiratory illnesses every weekday. Appointments for testing will be requested via a referral from your GP. You will then be called by the receptionists at Recherche Medical and given a drive in time and instruction. As it is a drive in clinic, please stay in your car and phone reception on arrival. You will receive a call from the Doctor over seeing the clinic and Nurses in full protective equipment will come out to your car. They will perform the swab on you through your car window and give you written instructions. You wind down the window, have the swab, wind it back up, then go home to self isolate until you receive the result. You will receive a negative result by text message in approximately 48 hours. Any positive results will receive a phone call from public health and contact tracing will begin. The swab is taken from your tonsils and the back of your nose. Admitedly it is unpleasant, can bring tears to your eyes, but is not painful. Young children will struggle to tolerate it. However it is quick, and the mild unpleasantness is worth the reassurance and provides benefit for the wider community. A selection of Recherche Doctors, Nurses and Receptionists have all recently been swabbed as part of the state Detect programme, and we are pleased to report we are all negative.

08.01.2022 Thank you to the Esperance Community for responding to the call for social distancing. Thank you especially to those people we know are quarantining themselves after returning from travel or are self isolating with fevers and coughs. Social distancing works, as proven by China, Japan and South Korea. That is why we are doing it. Sensible Government restrictions are now in place. Hopefully we can dodge the disaster unfolding in the rest of the world until we have more testi...ng capacity to find the virus. Emergencies and Urgent appointments- We have great appointment availability, and should be able to give you a same day phone consult. We want to know if you have a fever, cough or flu like illness. Many of these consults can be bulkbilled- see previous post. Covid-19 testing criteria changes so frequently, we wont bother putting it up here. The Doctors will chat to you via the phone and advise if you meet criteria. Online booking- you can now only make a booking for a phone consult online. We are attempting to have the vast majority of consults phone only, to prevent any healthcare spread of infection. If you think you need a face to face consult please call for appointment. The Doctor will call you and talk to you while you are in your car. If you are invited in, please wash your hands with soap and water in our new wash basin (rapidly installed by Dixons, thanks). The receptionists will only open the door once your hands are washed. Asthma medication- please don’t ask for scripts of asthma medication just in case. It wont help you if you haven’t got asthma, and it wont protect you from covid-19 even if you do. But a shortage of inhalers will affect someone who does have an asthma flare and needs it. Flu clinics- We now have private flu vaccines $20 each, for 6 months to 65 years old. The Government free vaccines for 65yrs and older should arrive next week. We will not be running large flu clinics this year. Instead only 4 people at a time. We can vaccinate you in your car if you come with someone else. If you come alone you will need to wait in the waiting room post vaccination, but be reassured the waiting room is mostly empty and you will be widely spaced.

06.01.2022 Female Locum GP Dr Hannah McCleave is at Recherche for the next 3weeks. Good Availability to see her. All phone/Skype consults will be bulkbilled. Please be nice to her we want her to stay with us long term as she is looking for somewhere to settle!

04.01.2022 Important COVID-19 information- Despite the border closures, we know there are still truck drivers and other travellers from Victoria, who are arriving in Esperance after coming across the Nullarbor. Unfortunately not all are isolating or quarantining as they should. Although travellers are being tested, the testing will miss 1 in 3 people who have the virus. Given the pandemic is escalating in Victoria, it seems only a matter of time until someone arrives carrying the vi...rus undetected. It only takes one case to start an outbreak, and the sooner this is detected the easier it will be to shut it down. So please continue to come and be tested if you have a new sore throat, cough or Flu like illness. It is no longer acceptable to go to work, school, or other social situations if you have a cold or flu. No one wants to be the person who started an outbreak in town. No-one wants another lock-down. If you get symptoms of a cold, stay home, give us a call, and get tested. COVID-19 consults and testing are bulkbilled, so are free provided you have a medicare number. We try to get the result back to you in 2 days, and can provide medical certificates for your time off. Thanks to everyone who has been tested so far. We have been testing an average of 5 people every day and thankfully all have been negative. Many thanks to the Recherche Nurses- Aimee, Lindell, Chrysa and Nicole, who have been running these clinics and performing the testing in protective equipment. See more

04.01.2022 Please could everyone download the Governments COVIDSafe App to their phone. Let’s keep Esperance safe as restrictions are slowly lifted. The problem is that ...half of all new infections are coming from people who feel well, but are unknowingly spreading the virus. This App is not going to solve that issue, but it will significantly help public health perform contact tracing. This will help keep you, your family and the local community safe. See more

04.01.2022 Well we are feeling pretty happy with the tremendous success of social distancing measures implemented in Esperance, and indeed both the state and federal gover...nments response to the Covid-19 situation. In a global pandemic, affecting every country in every continent on Earth, there is nowhere safer and nowhere we would rather be, than right here in Esperance. The Covid-19 virus spreads harder and faster in densely populated areas like London and New York. Thanks to the small population and wide open spaces here, social distancing is easier to achieve and has proven to be incredibly effective. More effective, in fact, than anyone dreamed of. But we can’t be complacent, as the current outbreak in Northwest Tasmania is showing. It only takes one case with community transmission to set off the chain reaction. We are continuing to screen all patients and to try to deal with issues by phone without you needing to come into our medical centre or have any contact. However we are still seeing patients in consult rooms if needed, with measures taken to prevent any viral spread. We are keen to talk by phone to anyone with a cough, fever, or sore throat as increased testing capacity and a lifting of restrictions means we can arrange Covid-19 testing for more people. We urge you not to put off any medical issues that need sorting, such as a mole that’s changing or blood in your stool. All the measures we have in place are to keep you safe whilst we deal with your other health issues. We also strongly urge you to get the flu vaccine this year more than ever. A flu outbreak would make it harder to pick any Covid-19 infections that need diagnosing, isolating and contact tracing. We have plenty including all the free government ones. A flu outbreak is bad enough, but both flu and Covid-19 outbreak simultaneously would be a nightmare.

01.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for continuing to respect the viral infection screening procedures we have in place at Recherche medical centre. We have a busy practice with over 200 people through the doors some days. Due to the threat of COVID-19 our receptionists had to take on a new and unexpected role, that of screening people to ensure no one with a viral illness enters the building, a difficult task at a busy medical centre. However Terina, Shay and Noeleen have done a great job. They politely ensure those with a cough remain outside until spoken to by a doctor, and ensure everyone feels safe, especially those that are vulnerable. Thank you ladies, much appreciated.
