23.01.2022 Reconciliation in the West 2020 Event Postponed Due to the impact of COVID-19, the Reconciliation in the West Event Committee have made the difficult decision to postpone our event scheduled for May 2020. We are exploring alternative dates to host this event later in the year and invite you all to follow/like our Facebook Page to stay informed. ... The Event Committee are also exploring digital ways that we can stay connected with our community throughout Reconciliation Week because, regardless of our current state of social isolation, we want to remind you that we are In This Together. Please comment below if you would participate in Rec in the West digitally by; a) watching a live-stream of music or dance workshop from local Indigenous artists on the day our event was scheduled? Or, b) participate in a collective digital art project where you could print a template and share artwork related to the 2020 National Reconciliation Week Theme In This Together. Resources could be downloaded, emailed or posted to you and you can email or post a copy of your work back to the committee. c) A digital way to stay connected and celebrate Reconciliation Week as suggested by you Kindest Regards, the Reconciliation in the West Committee.

17.01.2022 Looking for some inspiration to get started on your #InThisTogether Digital Bunting Designs? Here are three beautiful artworks created by Wendy Loneragan, a member of the "Anglicans For Makarratta" group. Heres what Reconciliation means to Wendy: It has to be a fully two-way effort. As a 75 yo non indigenous woman, for me its all about learning. Since my retirement Ive been taught by Elders I dont know, but who generously, untiringly give for any who want to start toward... understanding and respect. My 3 pictures represent 1. Being shown about aboriginal culture and about my own biases. 2. Learning by working with nature as the original people did 3. Seeing my own artwork differently after being shown Dark Emu ! I want to encourage others to recognise how the original people have understood and looked after this amazing country of ours. Were loving the designs being sent in so far for our special community video remember to complete your designs and send them through by Friday 15th of May to be included in the final video.

09.01.2022 The Reconciliation in the West Committee recognise and acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement and its continued impact on the Australian community. We thank those who have supported and amplified the voices of First Nations peoples over recent weeks. We acknowledge the continued trauma experienced by First Nations peoples while they participate in these conversations. We acknowledge the atrocities that have and continue to occur in our nation’s shared history, including ...the disproportionate rate of incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the deeply unsettling statistics around deaths in custody. We acknowledge the existence of systemic racism in institutions and the casual racism in communities across our country. We acknowledge the discomfort of people who may be engaging with these conversations for the first time and encourage you to push through this, keep learning and challenging your own biases. Our committee has representatives from four different organisations, and while we come from different cultures, we are all part of the shared history of this country. We believe at the heart of Black Lives Matter is a call for equality, better education to promote cultural respect and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by First Nations peoples. This includes addressing the reality behind the statistics related to incarceration rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and exploring the role we can play to reduce these. Alongside this is a call to action for all of us to address racism and stigma in every day life. Truth telling and holding a space for open conversation is the way forward, the way towards reconciliation and an important part of the healing process. We will continue to provide meaningful opportunities for people to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and, where possible, amplify the voices and stories from these communities. Through education, together we walk towards reconciliation. L-R Shona Reid (Executive Director- Reconciliation SA), Libby Craft (CEO UnitingSA), Sue Thomas (Director- Life Without Barriers), Rev. Peter Sandeman (CEO AnglicareSA), Doug Milera (CEO- Tauondi Aboriginal College)
