25.01.2022 I grew up in a family that was heavily influenced by jazz. My late grandfather played the saxophone in his own band and my uncle is a very talented saxophonist too. ______ Given my history it's no surprise that I loved this quote, but the original had no mention of movement. So I added it and I think it's so much better now. ______... I have come to realise that like jazz, both life and movement is best when you improvise. ______ Life can be very mundane and can quickly drain the energy and excitement from you when you keep having to do the same thing over and over and over again. ______ In much the same way our movement these days is restricted to exercise. Exercise which is way too repetitive and predictable. ______ Both life and movement can do with a lot more exploration, fun and play. ______ What will you do? The choice is yours.

25.01.2022 The glute max is the largest muscle in the body and also one of the most important when it comes to movement. ______ It functions by controlling the movements of the hip. We know that it moves the hip in three directions. ______... It moves the hip into extension - moving the leg from out in front of the body to behind the body. ______ It moves the hip into abduction - taking one femur (the bone in your upper leg) further away from the other. ______ Lastly it rotates the hip by moving the femur outwards. ______ We have exercises for all of those movements in isolation, like squats for extention and ice skaters for abduction. ______ But doesnt it make sense, that to utilise the glute max to its full potential, we should be performing all three actions at the same time and not separately? ______ Please comment below as 1, I would love to hear your thoughts and 2, do you have an exercise that uses 2 or more actions at the same time?

21.01.2022 Last night, when everyone else in the house was sleeping, I started playing around with how the joints in the body interact with each other. ______ I started to put these ideas down in the form of drawings. Unfortunately, drawing was never my strong point. I will need to take lessons from my sister @laurenleporecreative. ______... This drawing was of someone with anterior pelvic tilt. This is where the pelvis tilts forward. When the pelvis tilts forward it influences what positions the other bones are able to move into. ______ When the pelvis tilts forward, the back of the pelvis is raised. By raising the back of the pelvis, the hamstring which attaches to the pelvis is lenghthened. This is probably why it feels tight. ______ If the hamstring is lengthened, stretching is not going to change anything unless the pelvis can rotate back. ______ If your your hamstrings always feel tight no matter what stretches you do, it may be because your pelvis is tilted forward just like this diagram. ______ If this sounds like you, please comment below. 20.01.2022 A tell-tale sign that mums are stressed and overwhelmed is by checking to see what your jaw is doing. _____ If you constantly find yourself clenching your jaw during the day, you can be sure that you are carrying stress there. _____... This week I worked with a mum and we were using hamstring flexibility as a reference point to see what changes the work we were doing could create. _____ We started the same way all sessions start by working on breathing. After that we instantly saw about a 20 degree change in hamstring flexibility, which we were both impressed with. _____ She then mentioned that she only just realised that she actually held her breath a lot. _____ So we decided to investigate the jaw. What happened next blew us away. By relaxing the jaw the hamstring flexibility increased by a further 30 degrees.

18.01.2022 Walking / gait is the second most important movement pattern in terms of both importance and the number of repetitions performed. ______ If you are wondering the most important movement pattern is breathing. ______... Yet, like breathing aside from our first few years of life, we pay very little if any attention to how we are performing these actions.

18.01.2022 Finally got myself a pair of vivobarefoot shoes. I have been slowly transitioning my feet into a shoe with minimal layers/padding between it and the ground. _____ I have very flat feet and used to suffer from shin splints. A physio at the time said I needed orthotics. _____... The orthotics might have helped the symptoms a little but only temporarily, it never addressed the cause! _____ When I knew better I got rid of my orthotics and went to the root of the problem. I started with buying shoes that allowed my feet to do what they were meant to do - move, absorb and react.

14.01.2022 I have been lucky enough to work with @coach_tahls_nextgenfitness and we noticed that her hamstring flexibility wasn't where it normally is. ______ Further investigation pointed to a change in the relationship between her diaphragm, glutes and calf muscles. They were no longer working together nicely. ______... After a few exercises, we saw a dramatic change in flexibility. Tahlia had some homework to do to keep all areas working as a team. ______ Do you have a hamstring flexibility issue? Comment below if you do. What is your body trying to tell you?

09.01.2022 A short video from our recent seminar held at Aqualink Box Hill. _____ We can create some amazing videos of dramatic changes in flexibility when the brain permits it. _____... The key is to create awareness around what your brain has done and why. This is the most important step in trying to get you to take back control of your body. _____ The second step is realising that any long term change is reliant upon your involvment. _____ We are holding group sessions which run once a week for five weeks, its on every Wednesday from 5:30pm 6:30pm starting on the 12th September. _____ The group sessions are aimed at helping people take back control of their bodies. This will deal with stress, making movement easier, helping aches and pain and plenty of breathing. _____ Message us for more details.

When my two boys were born Christmas became even bigger in our house. _____... 07.01.2022 We have to move to exercise, but we do not have to exercise to move. ______ We all need to move all our joints in all the positions available and possible. ______... What positions are you unable to move into? ______ Exercise represents only a tiny proportion of the positions our bodies need to move into and through. ______ Maybe the pain, injuries and movement problems you have is related to positions your body no longer visits.

05.01.2022 Had a discussion with @coach_hannah_nextgenfitness a few weeks ago about why someone would squat with an excessive trunk lean. I talked about how ankle range of motion would play a big part but we would never know for sure until we tried it. ______ The first picture is Hannah's squat before we explored why her body moved this way. ______... First we worked on improving ankle range of motion, but her squat was almost identical to the first picture. Even though we had changed ankle range significantly, this wasn't evident in her squat. ______ The second picture is what happened after we introduced movement. Movement that encouraged most of her joints to move at the same time including the ankle. ______ The third picture really shows what is possible by simply encouraging movement. It's still a work in progress, but after movement everything improved. ______ Hannah's hips felt free Squat depth changed Trunk lean changed Squat felt smoother

When you assess your breathing, what you may realise is the neck isn't the problem. _____ Its simply a symptom of poor breathing patterns. _____ Correct your breathing and watch your neck and associated muscles relax.

03.01.2022 These are two of my favourite slides from a workshop I designed about 12 months ago which was specifically for mums. ______ The slides are still extremely relevant now. _____... The first slide was about maintaining your cool even in the presence of chaos. About not setting unrealistic expectations for yourself and therefore setting yourself up for failure. It was about being aware of managing the situation in a way that was best for you. ______ The second slide is what you might need to help keep your cool. Just kidding. The second slide is about balance and self care. What do you need to do so that when the previous slides chaos occurs, you are best able to maintain your cool. ______ Comment below with what you like to do to help restore the balance in your life. ______ For me it's music, I have been so busy lately that I had forgotten that.
