25.01.2022 Welcome to Reconciliation Tasmania's Facebook page.
08.01.2022 Every January the voices grow louder and stronger, yet some continue to attempt to silence this important debate and suggest that we should focus on the positives, or that January the 26th 1788 "wasn't a particularly flash day for the people on those vessels either." The date of 26 January 1788 actually marked the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia, first commemorated in 1818, and was not known as Australia Day until over a century la...ter. Do we want to be a nation that collectively buries our head in the sands of Botany Bay and won’t face up to what the landing of the First Fleet, and what came after, has meant for the First Peoples of Australia? Clearly, we don’t, because every year the ‘innocent’ Aussie national day where we throw some snags on the barbie and hit the beach is behind us and becomes more and more fraught and mired in controversy. We’ve been ignoring the hurt that celebrating Australia Day on January the 26th causes for many First Australians for far too long already. In 1938, on Australia’s sesquicentenary, a group of Aboriginals came together in Sydney and declared January 26th a Day of Mourning, our national day had already long been a day of hurt for First Peoples. During Australia’s Bicentenary on January 26th, 1988, Aboriginals and supporters protested around the country and on Sydney Harbour as the anniversary of the First Fleet landing was being commemorated. Every year on January the 26th the hurt continues, grows and deepens, as do the Invasion Day protests. Captain Cook did not discover Australia, and the declaration of terra-nullius was a lie. Nor did Australia’s human history begin on January the 26th 1788. It began many millennia ago and has a long and proud history. Why then would we continue to celebrate our national day on a date that we all know represents the beginning of dispossession for Australia’s First Peoples? We need to face our uncomfortable truths and have this debate to find another date. A date that is inclusive and uniting for all, allowing us to collectively move forward together. A day where we can all truly celebrate. We are working as normal and will continue to do so until the date is changed.
