20.01.2022 Without unconditional permission to eat mindful eating becomes the 'hunger-fullness diet'. Hunger and fullness are a guide to help you make more informed choices with food. You have the right to eat, no matter what.

19.01.2022 People tend to judge success when dieting by how much weight they do (or don't!) lose. Diets impact more than just your weight though, often affecting other areas of your life too. Here's a video I made about signs that your diet might not be working for you even thought you're losing weight. Let me know what you think

17.01.2022 Hey Scott Morrison, you're absolutely right although not in the way that you think. We should "let kids be kids" which means recognising that trans and gender diverse kids are THE authority on their lived experience. Allowing kids to express their gender in a way that aligns with their identity is good for their health. It helps trans & gender diverse kids to feel embodied. You don't have to understand it but your discomfort doesn't give you the right to take that away from them. Let trans & gender diverse kids be themselves.

16.01.2022 Sarah from Fat Yoga Australia is doing an amazing job creating yoga spaces that are inclusive for all bodies. "With mainstream yoga classes typically filled with lithe, athletic-looking Anglo women (it's been called the 'Skinny White Girl Problem'), it's not hard to see how someone who doesn't fit that mould might feel intimidated walking into a regular studio." "It can be very confronting to start coming to any form of exercise in a fat body, and so these sorts of spaces are really important when you are at the beginning of that journey."

15.01.2022 Hi all, it's been quite a while since I was last active here - that's about to change! World Osteoporosis Day was last week. Here's a piece I wrote about the effect that dieting has on bone health. If you enjoy reading it I'd love it if you'd think about sharing it.

14.01.2022 Feeling 'out of control' around food? You're not alone. It's a normal response to the way our society talks about food and bodies. "Eat this, not that, in this amount, and at these times" These messages are everywhere, often intended to help "improve" health by aiding weight loss or avoiding weight gain. ... They often have the opposite effect, erroding people's confidence in their ability to feed themselves and feel comfortable in their bodies. If you feel like you're struggling this is a gentle reminder that you're not the problem, the way our society talks about food is. You're doing the best that you can with the tools you've been given.

12.01.2022 Dieting is generally outcome driven - pick your goal weight / body fat % / clothing size etc and then try a variety of methods to get there and stay there. The rules picked up along the way promote disconnection from what you need. This might look like eating less than you're hungry for, restricting foods that you love, stopping emotional eating, or choosing exercise instead of resting or catching up with friends/family. It might also be not doing any of these things but jud...ging yourself because you feel like you 'should' be. A lot of diets don't work long-term because physical, emotional, and social needs don't disappear when you stop attending to them. Hunger increases in response to not eating enough, restriction leads to feelings of deprivation, unmet emotional needs intensify, and tired bodies get injured or sick. Shifting the focus away from specific body goals creates space to reconnect with your bodies natural cues - from 'will this help me lose weight?' to 'what do I actually need right now?' You might find they're not always the same thing.

12.01.2022 In case you needed a reminder

11.01.2022 I hate to be the bearer of bad news but getting "the body" won't magically fix everything in your life. It's a seductive lie that we've been sold - it keeps people trapped and often stops them from addressing what's really going on in their lives. If you're problems aren't really about weight or body shape dieting isn't going to fix them.

10.01.2022 'Guilt free' hot chocolate? Food and guilt are a terrible mix, one that's often used to sell diets and diet products. Labelling foods as bad or implying you should feel guilty for enjoying them generally doesn't stop people from eating them. It does tend to increase the amount of time spent thinking about them, reduce enjoyment when they are eaten and can lead to over eating. It's ok to eat foods that you enjoy purely for pleasure - even if it's not a 'healthier' version.

09.01.2022 I hate the phrase "wasted calories". It feels super judgy. It's ok to have specific eating habits and preferences. It's not ok to impose them on other people and make judgments about the foods they choose. Keep your eyes on your own plate!

06.01.2022 New on the blog: I reviewed 'Man up to eating disorders' by Andrew Walen. Men and boys are often left out of conversations about body image and eating disorders. This book add some much needed diversity!

04.01.2022 Fitness and fatness aren't mutually exclusive. Fit bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Using 'fit' when you really mean 'thin' or 'lean' perpetuates weight stigma and negative stereotypes about people in larger bodies.

02.01.2022 "If I trusted my intuition I'd only ever eat cake/burgers/cookies etc!" Feeling like you can't trust yourself around food is a conditioned response not a natural one. Diet culture hijacks your intuition. It masks your ability to listen to your body and respond to its needs leaving you feeling lost. Intuitive eating isn't about blindly following every impulse you have around food. It's recognising that some of the messages might be distorted, weakened or missing entirely and learning to tune back in.
