25.01.2022 What happens in an ice bath Your lymphatic drainage system is a closed loop fluid clearance system for the body. It will clear toxins, metabolites and other general body rubbish back to the lymph nodes to be excreted out of the body. It requires muscle activation as the pressure gradient to clear the body. If fluid clearance slows or stops there will be a build up of fluid and toxins. This will cause lethargy, pain and worst of all a chance for micro-bacterial growth. ... Physical movement improves the circulation of your lymph system. You can do this is by jumping up-and-down motion for a couple of minutes every morning, (an ancient Tai chi technique, but works for us modern people too!) Similar effects are seen with the use of a rebounder trampoline, vibration plate, and other forms of exercise like swimming and yoga. When your lymph flow improves, toxins are more easily cleared out of your system; and the "G-forces" created by rapid up and down movement, sweating, and stretching enhance this process. The cold stimulates lymphatic drainage, the vasoconstriction (constricting of the blood vessels) sends all the blood from your legs and arms back to the heart to keep you warm. This is the bodies natural defence mechanism to stop you from freezing to death when exposed to cold temperatures. This is why your hands and feet hurt or ache the most when getting in cold water. It is the blood rushing back to the heart as it says goodbye to your extremities. Over time, your body will adapt to the cold and you wont get the pain in the hands and feet as your body gets use to the cold exposure. Conditioning your brain and your body to accept, endure and embrace cold water immersion may be challenging, but the health benefits in both the short- and long-run are undeniably worth it.

17.01.2022 Benefits of cold exposure There are many benefits associated with cold exposure, some of these include o Decrease inflammation o Improve fat loss... o Improve immune system o Mental resilience Cardiovascular circulation happens to be one of the most critical components of our overall health and well-being. With poor cardiovascular circulation, not only is the blood flow compromised, the heart becomes stressed. Cold-water immersion can also centralise blood flow. When you immerse your body in cold water, the blood rushes to surround your vital organs. Your heart then is forced to pump more efficiently, pushing blood through all your vessels and supplying every part of your organs with the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Do this on a routine basis and you can help promote healthy blood circulation, and, ultimately, a healthy body. With improved circulation, you can improve heart health, enhance mental performance, boost the immune system and the metabolism, and simply give yourself more strength and energy to live. A 2007 research study found that cold showers can help treat depression and anxiety symptoms. Cold exposure used on a routine basis, may be more beneficial than prescription medications. This is because, cold water triggers a flood of mood-boosting neurotransmitters, which make you feel happy. A separate study that analysed the effects of regular winter swimming on the mood of swimmers showed that after four months of routine cold water swimming, the subjects felt more energetic and active than the control group.
