When it comes to recovery nutrition the 4 R's of Recovery (R-ehydrate, R-eplenish, R-epair, R-est) change to the 5 R's: . 1 Rehydrate (aim to replace 150% of the fluid you have lost within the first 4 h)... 2 Replenish muscle energy stores with carbs 3 Repair damaged muscles with protein 4 Reduce inflammation through appropriate food choices (e.g. antioxidants) 5 Replenish micronutrients . Credit to @performdietetics for the infographic above that provides some examples of meals that tick boxes 2-5. . Notice that there are no supplements?! That's because it is better to prioritise real food! . Supplements are in general only necessary for recovery nutrition if you have a quick turn around between training sessions or competition and access to and/or palatability of these foods are an issue. . A good idea can be to split your recovery nutrition into two parts with a small snack soon after exercise to kick start the recovery process followed by your next main meal to complete your recovery goals. . Completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture before completing her Masters in Sports Physiotherapy in 2006 and most recently her PhD. . Dr Jo has worked with more than 15 sports at an international and elite level including working with the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, Australian Paralympic Committee, New Zealand Rugby league, Swimming Australia, Athletics Australia and Tennis Australia. She has attended 3 Olympics and 2 Commonwealth Games. Currently Dr Jo works with Tennis Australia, Australian Open and is currently the Head Physiotherapist for the Jamaican Track and Field and Bobsleigh teams. . Whilst working with Swimming Australia Jo completed her PhD and continues to lecture and present around the world, including lecturing on the Master of Sports Medicine program at University of the West Indies. Very simply, electrical muscle stimulators are devices that send electrical impulses (usually generated by your brain) to your muscles to promote muscle contractions. . WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? . Recover Faster and Reduce Muscle Soreness Promotes circulation, increasing oxygen delivery and waste removal. . Improve Recovery from Injury and Fatigue Restores and enhances the connections between the brain and the body that are disrupted by fatigue and injury. . If not I thoroughly recommend it, because one of the main concepts discussed is quality over quantity, something we strive to promote everyday at the Recovery Room both with training and life in general.... . Another concept Celeste discusses is 'Time Perception' or an understanding of how your hours are spent. . Those with Time Perception spend more time watching TV or scrolling through social media and report feeling overwhelmed. . Those with Time Perception are very aware of their schedules and set aside more time for leisure. They allow time to contemplate and reflect and this gives them the sense they have more time. . You may believe you can relax if you put in more hours at work and get ahead of your workload, but in reality you're more likely to reduce your stress level by taking a break. .
