25.01.2022 What distinguishes "addiction" from all other coping mechanisms is that it's a strategy that is so powerfully comforting that it becomes (increasingly) more pai...nful and debilitating than whatever you were trying to cope with in the first place. It's a brain disease that disallows the mind from seeing that the "solution" is far worse than the original problem. It's more than an ineffective coping mechanism - it makes things worse, yet creates a perception that it is helping. A colleague referred to it as "a failure to adapt to life in the terminal phase" - I like that. In an "addictive" relationship with a coping strategy, this maladaptation is not only inefficient and ineffective, it's actually accelerating the movement toward death. Like having a terminal disease, and as it progresses, the medications not only stop working, they make the patient more ill. See more

There are two levels of compassion, one a biological instinct, the other the result of awareness. Just wishing to be compassionate, or saying that God or the Buddha wants us to be compassionate is not very effective. What we need is education and training. See more
