25.01.2022 Another episode of "My name is Borys" https://www.okpets.com.au/blog It was one of those winter days when one should not venture outside of the perimeters of one's own bed. I was still very young and enjoying Miss Casey's undivided attention. Unfortunately... https://www.okpets.com.au/blog
24.01.2022 Hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, and allergic to bullshit, Jean is not your usual grandma. She’s never been good at getting on with other humans, apart from her beloved granddaughter, Kimberly. Instead, she surrounds herself with animals, working as a guide in an outback wildlife park. And although Jean talks to all her charges, she has a particular soft spot for a young dingo called Sue. As disturbing news arrives of a pandemic sweeping the country, Jean realises this is no ordi...nary flu: its chief symptom is that its victims begin to understand the language of animals first mammals, then birds and insects, too. As the flu progresses, the unstoppable voices become overwhelming, and many people begin to lose their minds, including Jean’s infected son, Lee. When he takes off with Kimberly, heading south, Jean feels the pull to follow her kin. Setting off on their trail, with Sue the dingo riding shotgun, they find themselves in a stark, strange world in which the animal apocalypse has only further isolated people from other species. Bold, exhilarating, and wholly original, The Animals in That Country asks what would happen, for better or worse, if we finally understood what animals were saying.

23.01.2022 This is really interesting! Apparently a study found that dogs tend to use the Earth’s ‘magnetic field’ when they’re looking to relieve themselves. https://frontiersinzoology.biomedcentral.com//1742-9994-10
22.01.2022 What a fantastic book! Dog owners around the world love it! It begins like this: "First you see the head. Over the crest of the hill appears a muzzle, drooling. It is as yet not visibly attached to anything. A limb jangles into view, followed in unhasty succession by a second, third and fourth, bearing a hundred and fourth pounds of body between them. The wolfhound, three feet at his shoulder and five feet to his tail, spies the long-haired Chihuahua, half a dog high, hidde...n in the grasses between her owner’s feet. The Chihuahua is six pounds, each of them trembling. With one languorous leap, his ears perked high, the wolfhound arrives in front of the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua looks demurely away; the wolfhound bends down to Chihuahua level and nips her side. The Chihuahua looks back at the hound, who raises his rear end up in the air, tail held high, in preparation to attack. Instead of fleeing from this apparent danger, the Chihuahua matches his pose and leaps into the wolfhound’s face, embracing his nose with her tiny paws. They begin to play." ... As an unabashed dog lover, Alexandra Horowitz is naturally curious about what her dog thinks and what she knows. As a cognitive scientist she is intent on understanding the minds of animals who cannot say what they know or feel. This is a fresh look at the world of dogs - from the dog's point of view. The book introduces the reader to the science of the dog - their perceptual and cognitive abilities - and uses that introduction to draw a picture of what it might be like to be a dog. It answers questions no other dog book can -- such as: What is a dog's sense of time? Does she miss me? Want friends? Know when she's been bad? Horowitz's journey, and the insights she uncovered from studying her own dog, Pumpernickel, allowed her to understand her dog better, and appreciate her more through that understanding. The reader will be able to do the same with their own dog. Inside of a Dog will allow dog owners to look at their pets' behaviour in a different, and revealing light, enabling them to understand their dogs and enjoy their relationship even more.
22.01.2022 Must watch with sound
22.01.2022 Picture the scene: a giant white fridge, bursting with an abundance of mouth-watering delights and the (usually very hostile) door suddenly opens wide like the gates of heaven! No guardians around, just a clear path to paradise! With slight hesitation I begin to advance toward this heavenly vision As I’m about to reach my ultimate destination, all hell breaks loose, with an excruciatingly high pitched squeal, which turns out to be Miss Casey’s voice: He’s back! Oh my god, T...oulouse is back!!! Needless to say, despite my hardest efforts to remain within the heavenly ambience of fridge-dreaming, I wake up! Damn it! With great reluctance, despite the ungodly hour (I don’t think the sun has even yawned yet!), I crawl out of bed to see what all this commotion is about. As I walk into the common area, I see Miss Casey completely immersed in some kind of a trance dance. The only time I have ever seen her do this, was when I came out of surgery. Truth be told, it was the last thing anybody would want to see when recovering from anaesthesia With a sense of duty I dragged my feet towards Miss Casey to offer some kind of assistance, but as it turned out, Miss Casey not only didn’t need any counselling, she was in such an ecstatic mood that she grabbed my face, kissed it and exclaimed Borys, isn’t it wonderful? Toulouse is back. You must be really happy!!! Who the f**k is Toulouse?!?! I took a deep breath and thought C’mon man, wake up, you know this! And then it dawned on me. Toulouse is one of Miss Casey’s cats! Apparently he had been missing for a week. Not that I noticed Can I please go back to my fridge dream?!

17.01.2022 WARNING: girls only! Perivulvar dermatitis occurs when moisture and dirt get trapped in the fold around a female dog’s vulva. In severe cases, this fold may have to be surgically altered to prevent recurrence of infections. In milder cases the dermatitis can be treated topically with medications prescribed by your vet. When these medications are applied, its is important to prevent your dog from licking them off. An e-collar is a very useful tool in preventing your dog from licking her vulva during treatment.

12.01.2022 The allergenic plants are in full bloom! Here is one that causes dermatitis from contact with the leaves - wondering dew. Right now it is everywhere! Make sure your garden is clear from this pretty, but very nasty plant and avoid it on your walks. It causes skin irritation, which can cause "hot spots". Comfy collars help a great deal while the hot spot is being treated. http://www.okpets.com.au
10.01.2022 Hot spots occur predominantly in dogs (rarely in cats) secondary to an underlying skin condition which causes itch or pain. If a dog is uncomfortable in a particular spot, they may lick the area repeatedly to alleviate some of the discomfort. If this happens continuously and obsessively, that area will lose fur, become red, and will start to exude a serum that causes the fur around the edges of the hot spot to become matted. Eventually, the hot spot itself becomes the uncomfo...rtable itchy thing, even when the underlying condition may have already resolved. It becomes a vicious cycle, where a small itchy spot can turn into a large painful sore. Treatment has to be multifactorial. The key is to stop the dog from licking the area (eg. with an e-collar), while also administering medication (topical and/or systemic) that will alleviate the itch and make the dog comfortable.
