22.01.2022 There are SO many breathing techniques out there, meaning it is sometimes hard to know exactly where to start. This is a super simple one. 1) Big breath in for 4 seconds through the nose... 2) Hold that breath for 7 seconds 3) Breathe out for 8 seconds through the mouth. Just remember 4-7-8 #ot #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealth #breathingtechniques #anxietyrelief #panicattacksupport #mentalhealthsupport #therapyquotes #goals #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthadvocate #recoveryinmind #mentalhealthquotes #inspirationalquotes #therapy #assessment #intervention #sensory #ndis #ndisregistered #ndia #disability #adhd #depression #anxiety #schizophrenia #bipolar

20.01.2022 Happy Friday! How amazing is this weather? REMEMBER - slip, slop, slap and SIP water ALL day How much water have you had today?... This is a friendly reminder to make sure you are keeping your fluid levels up. ESPECIALLY, if you are taking any psychotropic medications as they can actually make it harder for your body to regulate body temperature! . . . . . . . . #ot #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychosocial #wellbeing #independence #mentalhealthsupport #therapyquotes #goals #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthadvocate #recoveryinmind #mentalhealthquotes #inspirationalquotes #therapy #assessment #intervention #sensory #ndis #ndisregistered #ndia #disability #adhd #depression #anxiety #schizophrenia #bipolar #sunsmart #fluidlevel

12.01.2022 Things NOT to say to someone who is feeling depressed or experiencing a depressive episode: You’ll be fine Just snap out of it!... Think happy thoughts But, you don’t look depressed?! Have you tried breathing? Just try harder Think more positively Cheer up! It could be worse! A reminder that these are NOT helpful. At times, it can be hard to know exactly what to say when someone says they are having a hard time. Even as therapist I’ve had to learn that there is no magic answer or phrase I can use to solve the persons problems. So what SHOULD you say/do? - Ask what you can do to help - LISTEN to what the person is saying - Show empathy - Use warm boys language - Be supportive - Tell them you care - Ask if they would like support to talk to a professional Sometimes, the person sharing their concerns at that moment just want to be heard, want you to listen and want to be reminded and reassured that they are not alone. A friendly reminder that depression and depressive thoughts doesn’t discriminate. Depression can affect anyone, anytime. Remember, if you are experiencing low mood or negative thoughts, reach out for support. A great place to start is working your local GP or any of the numbers listed on this page, including LifeLine on 13 11 14 . . . . . . . #ot #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psych #psychosocial #wellbeing #independence #occupation #mentalhealthsupport #depression #majordepressivedisorder #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthadvocate #recoveryinmind #depressionawareness #inspirationalquotes #therapy #assessment #depressionquoutes #ndis #ndisregistered #ndia #depressionhelp #depressionsupport #bipolardisorderawareness #anxiety #schizophrenia #bipolarawareness

12.01.2022 GROUNDING STRATEGIES TO HELP MANAGE INTENSE EMOTIONS What is a grounding strategy? Simply put, a mindfulness technique used to connect you with the present moment. Particularly helpful for people who may experience intense emotions (anger, irritability, sadness, self harm), for those who dissociate or experience flashbacks from PTSD. Ice and cold water is a GO TO for me and during sessions we explore the use of temperature in many different ways. ... Try some of these strategies and whilst you do, focus on what the ice looks like, it’s texture, the sensation, the temperature. In a previous post I discussed the ‘dive response’ (also known as the mammalian reflex) which is where holding your breath and placing your face in a bowl of cold water or placing a cold compress on your face, allows our heart rate to slow, blood to circulate more appropriately and breathing to regulate. Do this for around 30 seconds. Many of my clients report this as a fabulous way to quickly control intense, difficult emotions. Just remember if you have any heart risks, allergies to cold or health concerns please consult your GP before attempting these! . . . . . . . . #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealthawareness #anixetyawareness #anxietyreliever #anxietyrelieftips #traumarecovery #ptsdsupport #dissociation #anxietysupport #anxietytips #intrusivethoughts #anxietystrategies #sensorymodulation #mentalhealthtechniques #mentalhealthstrategies #groundingstrategies #anxietyrelief #traumahealing

07.01.2022 Categories of Occupations When we talk about ‘occupations,’ we are simply referring to any activity a client needs or wants to do. Meaningful activity can include:... SELF CARE: taking care of yourself, including showering, eating and general hygiene. PRODUCTIVITY: contribution to society, including paid work, volunteering, raising children, managing a household. LEISURE: activities completed for fun and enjoyment, including hobbies and interests. Occupational Therapists like to see a balanced mix of these occupations in someone’s daily routine. At times, clients will need assistance adapting or overcoming issues to optimise their engagement and involvement in everyday life. Occupational Therapists will consider the interaction between the activity, the persons skills and the environment when working with a client. So, if you have had an Occupational Therapy assessment before and were wondering why certain questions were asked - this may help! . . . . . . . #ot #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psych #psychosocial #wellbeing #independence #occupation #mentalhealthsupport #therapyquotes #goals #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthadvocate #recoveryinmind #mentalhealthquotes #inspirationalquotes #therapy #assessment #intervention #sensory #ndis #ndisregistered #ndia #disability #adhd #depression #anxiety #schizophrenia #bipolar
