23.01.2022 In times of isolation why not build a backyard ark sculpture? Long story short....... Alan had a dream! Maybe 10 years ago Alan found his dreamboat which entailed a long, drawn out, over budget transportation from Geelong to Iluka. It arrived on a rainy, stormy night, fitting right in with the whole ark narrative, looming above and over what appeared to be a very undersized truck.... I headed off to a women's film festival with friends and left Alan and the truck driver to manoeuvre his new dreamboat into the backyard, negotiating power lines in extreme wind and stormy conditions while the kids watched TV. We then wasted plenty of money with an architect who just couldn't understand what was now, hesitantly "our" dreamboat vision and who kept developing expansive, expensive plans of their own vision happily churning through our depleting savings. So life carried on and the project went on hold for years while we saved up again. Alan continued pottering on with his dreamboat, including repositioning single handedly without the use of a crane or hardhat while I nagged him to put on some safety gear and call in a crane. After turning 90 with his home designed, one person, ark shifting pulley system, just as he was levelling it, his dreamboat fell for him. In the kitchen, hearing the unusual lurching, creaking, falling ark noise, I ran to the backyard. Narrowly missing his hardhatless head, Alan managed to escape uninjured from beneath dreamboats perfect curves and proceeded to call an emergency crane operator. It is one of the worst affected areas with the recent devastating bushfires. ... We saw a community in grief but resilience, pulling together in a dark time. We saw where the fire burned right up to the edges of the Cobargo Showground, metres from where people were taking refuge after losing their homes. We saw the impact of the generous Australia spirit in action with all the support being provided to the fire victims. We spoke to Belinda whose family had lost everything. She shared about the night (only a few days ago) when the first Foodbank truck arrived. There was no water, no electricity, hardly any shelter, she hadnt showered in 3 days and still had the ash of the fire on her feet and she shared powerfully but simply: When the food turned up there was hope.
