20.01.2022 This week's Council Member featured is Josie Beveridge who is the Tasmanian Council Member. Who am I? I’m Josie (Josephine actually) Beveridge, a born and bred Tasmanian, but don’t hold that against me! I am a Medical Scientist by profession, although these days I only work in pathology one day per week (soon to retire altogether).... I grew up on a dairy farm and became involved in the beef industry when joining my late partner John Wear on the property here in northern Tasmania. John began the Angus stud in 1970, so the Chale Angus stud, like the Red Angus Society is celebrating 50 years. My involvement with Red Angus cattle began with the Angus herd having a significant red gene and we would regularly get a red calf or two. In the late nineties I purchased two Red Angus cows that originally came from the old Emu Vale stud here in Tassie. The late Ellis Ashton who managed that herd was a wonderful cattleman and a great mentor. He was a Red Angus breed inspector in the early days of the Society. From there I kept expanding the Red Angus herd, purchasing cows from Jillangolo and Moorwatha herds with the first registrations in the year 2000. My partner John passed away in 2017 and I have continued on my own with both the Enfield Red Angus and Chale Angus herds, calving about 150 stud cows altogether on 700 acres. The bulls are offered in an annual bull sale in the autumn. You could say I have been on a steep learning curve with some aspects of the farm management and learning lots of new skills! Benefits breed society? Being part of a breed society gives you a wonderful community of like-minded people who enjoy their cattle and from whom you can learn and promote the breed. Favourite Red Angus memories? Learning from Ellis Ashton, who I mentioned was a great mentor. Favourite meat/meal? A good scotch fillet with good marbling, and I hate to say it but I am quite partial to a nice little rack of lamb. Christmas wish list? Is this where I wish for world peace? Other than that, I hope everyone can be with their family and friends for Christmas and stay safe. Thanks Josie!

14.01.2022 A great day out for Tasmanian Red Angus today. Dean and Diane Way of Springpark Red Angus organised the day as our Tasmanian get together but also to celebrate ...their 20 year involvement with junior cattle handlers. We were treated to a fantastic view of Mt Roland from Skyview Barn @ Eagles Nest Retreat. We had three guest speakers, lunchtime entertainment, our annual meeting and the day finished with a bit of fun. A cattle handlers competition judged by our own junior member Thomas Febey was held with that unmatched view as the background. See more

05.01.2022 Friday 5 with a Council Member! This week's Council Member feature is David Hobbs from NSW. Who are you and where are you from?... For those who don’t know me. We as a family Ashleigh, Taylah, Hunter, Stuart and Jessica operate Round -Em-Up Red Angus and Simmental stud . I managed Tullatoola Red Angus/BST for 22 years until the passing of Bruno Schmid in 2013. We live in Central West NSW in a small town called Molong. We also recently purchased Moorwatha Red Angus from Judy and Roger Frankenberg with a view to eventually putting this into our kids names to continue on one of the oldest stud names in Australia - they are one of the founding member studs. This is my second time as a board member and have a big belief that we need to be closer and more open to our members with information etc. What’s the best thing about Red Angus cattle? My Passion for Red Angus started with one bull used over heifers in a large Simmental operation. We soon discovered that they had a diverse use for many reasons. The ability to poll other horned breeds, to put pigment around eyes, add milking ability, and a quiet docility are just a few of the attributes that I love about Red Angus . Favourite Red Angus Memories? Best memories are Adelaide feature breed in 2009. My time at Tullatoola building a lasting cow herd . Fellow members across Australia within the breed both commercially and stud. Favourite cut of meat and/or meal? Favourite cut of meat is home grown 21 day hung Red Angus rib rack slow cooked and then sliced into individual steaks. What are the benefits of being part of a breed society? The benefits of being in the breed society are you are part of a breeding unit trying to improve a genetic product with fellow members who have various tools available to them within the breed society. I have a view on this that you only get out of a breed and society what you are prepared to put in. There are plenty of resources that one can use to record and help improve their stud cattle in a society as well as being able to meet fellow breeders. We should remember that as much as it is being a business it should also be fun.
