25.01.2022 YAY It's SALE time at Redbreast Plants, just in time for today's International Day of Forests, which celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests. Not to be outdone tomorrow is National Eucalypt Day, so there's no excuse not to get out in the garden and plant a tree.

25.01.2022 Petrichor!!! How we love it. It is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. Coined in 1964 by two CSIRO researchers, Isabel Joy Bear and Richard G. Thomas, who described how the smell derives from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, which is absorbed by clay-based soils and rocks. During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound, geosmin, a metabolic by-product of certain actinobacteria, which is emitted by wet soil, producing the distinctive scent. So when you smell petrichor it is time to think about your next planting project! We can help you with this. We are also expecting our next delivery of plants next Tuesday so come and see what new delights we have to offer.

23.01.2022 Plant a Tree Day will be a little different this year. The ever popular Lions Club of Kingborough BBQ will return but please BYO water bottle and a thermos if you want a hot drink. 20.01.2022 International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of some famous women in Australia who have made considerable contributions in botanical circles, in conservation and in spreading knowledge of our indigenous plants. Just a few who spring to mind are: Ellis Rowan, Maisie Carr, Edith Coleman, Mary White, Lady Jane Franklin, Ina Higgins, Edith Coleman, Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, Olive Mellor, Olive Pink, Georgiana Molloy, Aunty Fran Bodkin, Harriet and Helen...a Scott, Janet Cosh, Thistle Harris, Nancy Burbridge, Dr Beth Gott, Dr Barbara Briggs, Ilma Grace Stone,Winifred Curtis, Enid Robertson, Vera Scarth-Johnson. My own gardening path has been deeply influenced by the following women among many others: Joy Stones, Sally Johannsen, Leslie Gillanders, Jill Mitchell, Lilia Weatherly, Michele Filtness and my own dear mother, who could turn a dead stick into a flourishing plant within days! Then there are the inspirational gardeners who work in our public gardens such as the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, who give such joy to so many visitors. If you know of an inspirational woman gardener then do share and let’s celebrate them together!

17.01.2022 Dozens of packets of unidentified mystery seeds (in silver foil packaging with white labels), sent from Asia have arrived at Australian addresses over the past five weeks, prompting fears of a biosecurity breach that could wreak havoc on the environment as well as our farm and horticultural industries. Anyone who receives unsolicited seeds in the mail is asked to report it to the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment on 1800 798 636. Do not dispose of any seeds in the rubbish or plant in your compost as they could be an unknown weed species!

09.01.2022 Did you know that Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a serious threat to Tasmanian agriculture due to the damage it can cause to vegetable crops, fruit and ornamental trees? BMSB can also be a nuisance pest for humans due to its habit of seeking shelter in large numbers in houses, factories and machinery over winter. The high-risk season for BMSB is September to April, when it hitchhikes in containerised cargo and on vessels from countries like Italy and the USA. Thanks to ...enhanced measures introduced by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, this season saw a major decrease in live detections from this challenging pest find out the full story here: https://bit.ly/2At0MS1 We can all help protect our country from exotic pests by looking out for hitchhikers in imported products SEE IT. 06.01.2022 Not only do we have the beautifully perfumed Brown Boronia in stock we also have the longer lived red and yellow flowering varieties. Their perfume is just as pleasant and in habit make an evenly rounded shrub to 1 -1.3 m high. The soil should be well-drained and contain a good amount of organic matter such as leaf mould or compost, well mixed with the soil. As the boronia’s roots are near the surface they can easily dry out in summer, therefore regular watering is essential, as well as using a mulch or low-growing plants or even rocks. Boronias mostly prefer dappled sunlight or partial shade. Pruning after flowering has finished is important to maintain shape and a long life. The flowers last well in a vase.
