23.01.2022 HE WENT ALL RIGHT Back to the 1960s and 1970s today, and into the centres, with a man who made his name at the Illawarra Collegians before going on to become a Manly Warringah Sea Eagles crowd favourite, who finished up captain coaching Proserpine up in Queensland in Les Hanigan. Thoughts on the game and career of this Southern NSW, Country NSW, North Queensland, New South Wales and Australian rep?
23.01.2022 RANDOM STUFF THE ROOS OF 1952 / 53 The wonderful front cover of the famous Sporting Life magazine of September 1952 and the associated team pinup that featured the proud touring Australian Kangaroos of 1952 / 53. Plenty of massive names of the generation were captured in this shot of some of New South Wales and Queenslands finest in a squad captain - coached by the legendary South Sydney fullback in The Little Master Clive Churchill.... As they prepared and left home soils, many local critics were quite vocal in their lack of enthusiasm about the teams chances, but the young men from Down Under did better than many anticipated. The green and golds went on to play 40 games on that long, grueling and relatively successful sojourn of the northern hemisphere, winning 33 games, drawing 1 and losing just 6 matches. Those critics were right in the end however, and it was not to be for the Kangaroos of 1952 53 when it came to the two key Test series against Great Britain and France, two true powerhouses of the International game during this era. In the First Ashes Test, the Willie Horne captained Great Britain won handsomely by 16 9 at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday the 4th of October 52. That real handy Lions national team reclaimed the Ashes with another strong performance and a 21 5 victory in the Second Test played out of good old Station Road, Manchester on Sunday the 9th of November 52. The Australians gained a little redemption, winning the dead rubber Third Ashes Test against the old foe by 27 7 at Odsal, Bradford on Saturday the 13th of December 52. On the French leg of that voyage, things were looking good and on the up when the Australians won the First Test by 16 12 at Parc des Princes, Paris on Saturday the 27th of December 52. But come the new year, and Les Chanticleers hit back, claiming the dour Second Test 5 0 at Stade Municipal Bordeaux on Sunday the 11th of January 53. And the tricolours of France went on to seal the deal with a 13 5 win in the Third clash at Stade de Gerland, Lyon on Sunday the 25th of January 53, to finish a disappointing International campaign for the brave Kangaroos of 1952 - 53. The clashes between rival fullbacks in Australian genius Clive Churchill and the little French wizard Puig Pipette Aubert would be long talked about. So there you go folks, some 68 years since the Australian Kangaroos of 52 / 53 were captured in glorious colour by Sporting Life before they sailed off to foreign soils.

22.01.2022 HE WENT ALL RIGHT Back to the early 1990’s, and through to the early 2000’s today, and into the three quarters, with a Western Suburbs Magpies, Newcastle Knights, St George Illawarra Dragons and Wigan Warriors crowd favourite in Jamie Ainscough. Thoughts on the game and carer of this City, New South Wales and Australian rep?

20.01.2022 EDUCATE ME This bloke Neville Costigan notched up a very impressive 193 first grade games over 12 seasons between 2003 and 2014 with the Brisbane Broncos, Canberra Raiders, St George Illawarra Dragons, Newcastle Knights and Hull Kingston Rovers. Now he just had to be handy. How did Neville go on the field?

18.01.2022 From foxsports.com.au - Simon Brundson and George Clark write: Rugby league is back in a big way following a weekend of All Stars and NRL trials action to whet ...the appetite of footy-starved fans. And while we’re still two and a half weeks away from the season proper kicking off, there was plenty to take away from the games played around the country in the past few days. Here are five big things we learned. THE KEVVIE MOVE THAT COULD REVITALISE MALIGNED STAR You can criticise Tevita Pangai Jr [pic. left] for his form last year, but the Brisbane forward didn’t have it easy. Under Anthony Seibold he was moved from lock to prop to second row with nobody quite sure where his best position was. The same applied for Joe Ofahengaue [pic, right], who has since left the Broncos for the Tigers. Pangai played big minutes in Brisbane’s draw with Wynumm Manly, and added a bit of mongrel up the middle. Given how pedestrian the Broncos middle looked at times in 2020, moving Pangai to prop could be a smart move from Kevin Walters. He’s durable, has soft hands and can flick the switch and go hell for leather. It then allows Alex Glenn and youngster Jordan Riki to lock down the second-row spots and it gives Brisbane a much more mobile pack. ____________________________________________________________________ BUNNIES WILL BE HARD TO BEAT IF LATRELL STAYS FIT Last year we got a glimpse of Latrell Mitchell as South Sydney’s fullback, before a nasty hamstring injury ended his season prematurely. Now the gun two-time premiership winner is getting back to his best and it sounds an ominous warning to the rest of the competition. The Rabbitohs are currently second favourites to win the 2021 grand final with bookmakers, behind only Penrith, and many good judges are tipping Wayne Bennett’s Bunnies for big things. But the fortunes of the side could rest on Mitchell and whether he can play the entire season without getting injured again. On Saturday night in Townsville he returned from injury to help the Indigenous All Stars score a come-from-behind 10-all draw against Maori. Mitchell started at fullback and then spent time at left centre, where he set up a crucial try for South Sydney teammate Alex Johnston late in the game. Fox League guru Cooper Cronk believes Mitchell’s combination with Bunnies five-eighth Cody Walker could prove lethal this year. His touch is to set up tries, his touch is to score tries. That combination between himself and Cody Walker could be the best in the comp this year, Cronk said. Indigenous All Stars coach Laurie Daley was impressed with Mitchell’s performance and agrees South Sydney will be hard to beat if he stays fit. He is just classy, Latrell, Daley said. He knows how good he can be and once he gets himself right, he is a weapon. I think these blokes (South Sydney) are in for a good year. ____________________________________________________________________ PANTHERS PUZZLE SEEMS TO BE SOLVED Penrith coach Ivan Cleary may have made his decision on who will replace the suspended Brent Naden at right centre to start the season. In their trial against the Mounties, Panthers recruit Paul Momirovski was on the right flank inside rookie winger Charlie Staines. Naden is set to miss at least the first month of the season and, even then, will need to earn his position back after being banned for using cocaine and breaking the COVID bubble on the eve of last year’s grand final. Last week Cleary named Momirovski, Tyrone May, and Matt Burton as the contenders to play right centre in Naden’s absence. Momirovski only joined the club a fortnight ago but he was handed the job at the weekend and appears the frontrunner to win that jersey for Round 1. Burton also played the trial but not at centre. Cleary’s mention of Burton last week was interesting given he’s a playmaker by trade, and he has been trying to get a release from Penrith to join Canterbury before the season starts. ____________________________________________________________________ TITANS BEAST THROWS HIS HAT IN THE BACKLINE RING If you’ve not heard of Greg Marzhew - formerly known as Leleisiuao until he changed his name last year - then you should really type his name into Google. Marzhew was a standout for Wentworthville, Parramatta’s feeder side, in the 2019 NSW Cup. He topped the run metres, tackle busts and also came third in linebreaks along with scoring 12 tries. He’s that bloke who can bench 190kg, squat 210kg and dead lift 250kg, but since switching to the Titans at the start of 2020 the centre or winger played just one game in the Queensland Cup before the league was suspended He made up for lost time in the Titans’ loss to Burleigh over the weekend, scoring three tries. And now the 23-year-old, who will be competing with Brian Kelly, Philip Sami and Patrick Herbert for a centre spot, just wants to play. After the year of COVID I just want to get back out there and play any footy I can, he said. I’ve been ready for the last five years. It should be time soon. Hopefully. With a showing like that, you sense Titans coach Justin Holbrook can’t ignore him for much longer. ____________________________________________________________________ WELCOME HEADACHES FOR TIGERS COACH It’s fair to say there’s not a whole lot of buzz around Wests Tigers heading into season 2021, but the future at Concord looks promising following the emergence of some young stars. Coach Michael Maguire has some decisions to make in regards to team selection, largely around his spine which remains unknown three weeks out from competition. With Adam Doueihi suspended for the start of the season there’s at least one vacant spot up for grabs. Daine Laurie only joined the club from Penrith a fortnight ago but he was impressive playing at five-eighth in their trial against the Roosters on Saturday. Laurie is a fullback by trade and he could play either there or in the halves, after showing off his playmaking skills in a tight loss to the Chooks. He was partnered by Jock Madden at halfback who was impressive and looks to be making a serious run at the No.6 jumper for Round 1, alongside the experienced Luke Brooks. The other young star to feature was Jake Simpkin at hooker and he is fighting it out with Jacob Liddle for the starting No.9 spot at the Tigers. Liddle is more experienced but he’s battled injuries in the past few years and has struggled to get a proper run at the hooker role. The other player to factor in selection is Moses Mbye, who can play virtually anywhere in the spine and will need to slot into the side somewhere.

08.01.2022 HE WENT ALL RIGHT Back to the mid-1960s, and through to the mid-1970s today, and into the fullback role, with a goal kicking St George junior who had two stints with the Dragons, and one with Norths Wollongong, who would also become a true crowd favourite of the Eastern Suburbs Roosters faithful in Allan McKean. He will bring Cameron Smith, Co...oper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston back. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to recall the players who gave Queensland their unparalleled success a few years back.
