17.01.2022 100 years ago today - the state water commission finally tells the waiting returned soldiers when the first round of new Red Cliffs blocks will be allocated. Th...eir long wait was coming to an end. The Sunraysia Daily reported: "The water commission, in accordance with the promise made some time ago, had been arranging to allocate a number of blocks at the new Red Cliffs irrigation settlement before the end of the current year. Very many difficulties have been encountered, but the commission feels that it will be able to allot a reasonable number, about 250, during next month." "These lands are of course reserved for discharged solders who have their qualification certificates for irrigation blocks." "In accordance with the arrangements made, the committee for issuing qualification certificates to soldier land seekers will meet at Mildura on Monday, December 13, before the land is allotted. All applications for qualification certificates, accompanied with supporting documents, should be lodged not later than December 8, at Melbourne, so that time may be given for the examination of the various credentials submitted prior to the committee meeting. The Land Board to allocate the land will meet at Mildura on December 15, and will sit until the land made available is allotted to those who have been previously qualified." The photo is of a window display at the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission headquarters in Melbourne in roughly the late 1940's. It is courtesy of State Library Victoria.
