19.01.2022 Bits from today
19.01.2022 The other night at work I was so excited to see a cicada still in it shell in the garden, emerging and being ‘born’ in the dark. I decided to adopt this fella,... and every 15 minutes or so went to check on his progress to see that he was doing ok. I was so god damn fucking proud. My son. My insect son. Was thinking of an exotic name, like Santiago, Allesandro, or Beauregard..... oh the decisions of naming a fucking cicada. The name had to be perfect. As my son was being born, he kept on giving me serious side eye. I’M YOUR MOTHER - DON’T BE SUSPICIOUS YOU LITTLE JERK. So as the gorgeous little fella was doing his thing, I’d go back into the kitchen and announce his progress to my workmates. ‘MY SON HAS HIS HEAD OUT’ ‘MY SON IS A GREEN GROCER!!!!’ ‘MY SON HAS BIRTHED HIS LITTLE WINGS BUT THEY ARE STILL WET’ I think most staff were a bit eye rolly, but I told them to fucking get over themselves and be proud - we had a new generation amongst us and so far he was amazing. ‘HE’S DOING HIS BACKBEND OUT OF HIS SHELL!’ I demanded the chef come see. I showed photos to customers. They probably thought I was fucking mad. Nothing new there, folks. Old news. ‘HOLY FUCK HIS WINGS ARE OUT AND HE IS MAJESTIC AS FUCK GUYS - I’M GOING TO GO SHED A TEAR’. And then the shift was over. I went out in the dark to say Adios, and to fly free and to fuck his eyes out with all the ladies and make lots of little cicada babies. Keep the family name alive, my boy. And then I realised, he didn’t suit an exotic name. So I called him Scott Jr. I don’t even know a Scott Snr, but Scott Jr just seemed to fit perfect. Goodnight, Scott, don’t get eaten by a fucking bird tomorrow. I’m too invested in your life to think you’re a dumb fucker to just die first thing in the morning being torn apart by a bunch of wanky kookaburra’s. Just don’t let me down, son. So the next morning I went out to our sacred spot of cicada birthing, and gently plucked the shell from where it was on the wall. I carried it, and put it on the front entry fly screen to the restaurant where the boss has been lining up some others he’s found. I was so proud to have Scott Jnr there for all to see, even if they didn’t realise the enormity of my love for that cicada shell. I guess kind of like if you carried your placenta home in a sandwich bag, I don’t know - I never did that - so maybe not quite as intense. And then a few hours later, customers started rolling through the door. A kid knocked some shells off the fly screen, and instead of gently picking them up, they fucking squashed them, intentionally. Deliberately raising their bastard little foot up, and crunching down on those little shells, breaking not only some of mother nature’s finest creations, but crushing any hopes I had of Scott Jr’s marvellous life he had before him. ‘Oh darling don’t do that’ Said the mother. Right. Solid reprimand. Little darling my ass. All hope was fucking lost. Damn kids. For fucks sake. Anyway, here’s some photos my now probably dead insect child, Scott Jr. Marvellous little creatures. Did you know that only the male cicadas sing? And they can pump out volumes of up to 120 decibels? Heck. Be kind. Especially to cicada shells. Share this post please Madlings. 1 share = 1 prayer for a cicada haha fuckin’ HECK. Cheers, The mum.
18.01.2022 Crowds of picnickers in designated off leash space for dogs. Even when you keep dogs ON leash whilst explaining to people that it’s off leash, they still call you horrible names and tell you to fuck off. What’s the point in having areas (not many, I might add) for off leash play for dogs when entitled people insist on using these same spaces for picnics and fishing? For those who argue dogs should be under effective control, I agree to a point. I’ll never let dogs off leash in off leash areas unless I can clearly see it’s safe to do so. But to expect that dogs won’t run up to food which is left lying around is idiocy and reeks of double standards. We ask far too much of dogs. They need spaces to play without the meat and three veggie sector taking over every little bit of green space left in Sydney.

12.01.2022 Today was Finn's big day. After arriving in July unable to walk due to hanging upside down on a wire fence where his feet were tangled, today he left for the fo...rest with Mumma Holly, V and Eddy. This is always an anxious time for all but inevitable. Finn's natural mother lives in our forest. Will he find her and never return? Will he continue to return to the house each night whilst his confidence grows? He's been ready for weeks but we've held off as it would've left Ginger alone but now Ginger has Milly. I sat with him in the forest for a time and he kept an eye on me. Once I saw him settle down with the others I left. The forest is now his protector <3 Hope to see you later today little man... More photos in the thread. See more

10.01.2022 Anyone interested in buying my dehydrator? It’s an Excalibur with 9 trays. Retails for around $550. Selling $300. I’ve made doggy treats in it. Works great. Selling coz I’m not yet back at work and things are a bit meh in the $$ department. I have other items for sale but not really doggy related so will list on Marketplace.

10.01.2022 DABS are amazing. If you can spare $5, consider a donation. Their work is crucial and your dollars go 100% to the animals they rescue.

01.01.2022 Meet 16 month old Ellie who has come to GRR in quite a roundabout way. Ellie lived, and we use that term loosely, at a Council approved and registered Breeding ...Facility in regional NSW. This Breeding Facility is similar to the type of establishment GRR asked all of our followers to object about recently in South Australia. Despite registration with Council and affiliation to a Dog Breeding Group, dogs kept in these premises are there for one purpose and one purpose only....and that is to breed, so the owner can sell puppies to make money. It's how these types of people make their living. Ellie came to GRR very wary of people, crawling on her tummy as she approached anyone and unfortunately, this behaviour is typical of a dog kept for the sole purpose of breeding. As with most of the dogs that come from these places, Ellie was also found to have the usual worms and is also being treated to eradicate them and this will help with her general wellbeing. Ellie arrived with information advising that she was not a healthy girl so it is was off to GRR's vet Ben at Kogarah Vet Clinic for a health check. Blood tests, ultrasounds, x-rays and pathology all advised that Ellie's kidneys are not functioning as they should. Instead of two banana shaped kidneys on the ultrasound they appear as one large mass, not cancer, just congenital. Ellie will never come into season and that is why she is no longer at the 'facility'. She will never get to reach her senior years - her prognosis due to this congenital abnormality is poor, with a high likelihood of kidney failure which will likely present quickly and will require urgent action from her carer. Ben took great care to sit Ellie's carer down and describe to how to recognise the first signs of kidney failure, so when the time comes, Ellie can be quickly taken to be euthanised so she does not suffer. Ellie will spend her life, however long that may be, with GRR. She is learning to trust, she eats heartily, today she is playing in the dog pool to keep cool as Ellie cannot be allowed to overheat as she would up her water intake and her kidneys would not be able to cope. Ellie is currently being provided with a Renal Diet and to see her run in the paddock you would never think that, at best guess, she just might only make the age of three. The facility where Ellie came from is one of many registered and approved facilities around Australia and it exists because people who decide to get a puppy can get one as soon as they want, because these facilities always have puppies. People want the well promoted designer dogs and while it is their right to purchase the type of dog they want, it is not the right of the breeding dog to be subjected to the life they lead on these 'facilities'. Ellie and those like her are the mothers of the cute puppies in the photos people show on Facebook as they advise how much they love their new puppy. If only people stopped to think about the awful life the poor mothers of these puppies are living. Apart from advocating for legislation changes to shut these large breeding facilities down, the best thing we can do is to educate anyone and everyone about the plight of the poor breeding girls who suffer terribly both physically and emotionally, and about why you should never buy a puppy from such places. If there is no demand, the supply will dry up and these people will be forced out of business. For now, Ellie gets to live the life she always deserved - a free and easy life with GRR, where she will get the love and care she needs, for however long she is with us.
