25.01.2022 We have to create a better circular economy in Australia. This video from our partner, Replas, explains the importance of the 'Pull Through Effect'. Now is the time to contact your local councils, schools, and businesses, to encourage them to consider purchasing products made from recycled materials. Imagine if all councils, schools, and businesses committed to a % of their procurement budget for the year having to be spent on products made from recycled materials?! This would make such a difference! Share the message. Talk to your work/family/friends. More demand will equal more onshore manufacturing, will equal more jobs, and much less re-usable waste in landfill!

23.01.2022 Learn more about the Circular Economy and just how important it is to the success of recycling efforts :)
22.01.2022 REDcycle has been recovering post-consumer soft plastics in Australia since 2011. To date the program has diverted over 1 billion pieces of soft plastic waste from landfill. REDcycle is a product stewardship model where everyone involved in the lifecycle of soft plastic packaging, plays a role in the end of life outcome. This includes brand owners, retailers, recyclers, and Australian consumers. Nothing is truly recycled until recovered material is manufactured into new pr...oducts containing recycled content, whether it is product packaging, outdoor furniture, signage, or road base, and those products are introduced into the market. It is vital to support the procurement of Australian made products with recycled content to ensure there is ongoing demand for waste materials such as soft plastic recovered by REDcycle. Liz Kasell, Founder, REDcycle There is ample objective evidence that the vast majority of what Australians present for recycling is made into new products that reduce landfill, greenhouse gases and resources while contributing some 50,000 regional jobs. While we can improve, we should be proud of a system that recycles some 60% of all waste every year, according to the Government's National Waste Report. The anti-recycling narrativedoes not always accord with positive and practical reality at the consumer or operational levels. - ACOR CEO, Pete Shmigel Building an effective domestic recycling industry is one important part of reducing the harmful impact of packaging on Australian communities. We acknowledge that the recycling system is a long way from perfect. Australia has a clear plan in place, with work under way, to address these issues and build a sustainable and holistic approach to packaging. But recycling isnt complete until recycled material is used again. Through the 2025 Targets, Australian industry and government are working to ensure a 50% average of recycled content is included in packaging. APCO statement, https://www.packagingcovenant.org.au//apco-media-response- REDcycle collaborates with three trusted, Australian owned and based recycling and manufacturing partners who utilise recovered material to produce a range of hundreds of recycled plastic products. 1. Replas (https://www.replas.com.au/), based in Ballarat, Victoria, who convert REDcycle material into a range of recycled products including indoor and outdoor furniture, bollards, and signage. 2. Close the Loop, based in Somerton, Victoria, who utilise REDcycle material as a component of high performance recycled asphalt additive for road infrastructure known as Tonerplas (https://www.closetheloop.com.au/tonerplas/) 3. Plastic Forests, based in Albury, NSW, who use REDcycle material as a component of products such as mini wheel stops and air conditioner mounting blocks (and other products) for the consumer market (https://plasticforests.com.au/prod/air-con-mounting-blocks/).

20.01.2022 NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK What is TonerPlas?! TonerPlas is a performance-enhancing asphalt additive made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials a combination of soft plastics recovered through the REDcycle program, and toner from used printer cartridges via Close the Loop’s cartridge collection programs including Cartridges 4 Planet Ark.... TonerPlas is a product of Australian advanced manufacturing. 8 years in R&D and testing in asphalt roads by Downer under their very stringent qualification criteria has proven this is a high-quality product that outperforms the current standard. Improved rut resistance and greater fatigue life = longer-lasting roads. Features of TonerPlas: * Performance - Asphalt containing TonerPlas performs better and lasts longer than standard asphalt * No environmental risk - Downer asphalt products containing TonerPlas have received an Order & Exemption from the NSW EPA stating they are no more risk to the environment than standard asphalt. This testing included an unprecedented analysis of leachate and microplastics. * Registered mix designs in Victoria - Downer asphalts containing TonerPlas have just been issued a conditional registration from DOT (Department of Transport VIC). * Award-winning business model - TonerPlas by Close the Loop was the only Australian finalist in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation ‘Circulars’ awards in 2019. Join the 1000km TonerPlas Challenge by encouraging your local council to get on board and help reach the 1000 km goal! Find out more at http://1000kmchallenge.net/ Now, enjoy this video of dedicated REDcyclers telling you more! This was too good not to share again!

They're rolling out greener, more sustainable and safer roads by adding TonerPlas to their roads. The recent reseal of Wembley Avenue in Adelaide, South Australia, used around 114,000 plastic bag equivalents and toner from 2,700 printer cartridges. Check out the video below to see how they have been using TonerPlas in their roads.... #CloseTheLoop #REDcycle #circulareconomy #BeyondTheBin #TonerPlas #1000kmTonerPlasChallenge #recycling #sustainability Youtube link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBUAOShTaX0&feature=youtu.be
19.01.2022 How was everyone's ISO Easter?! Did you have a good break - at home?! Eat too much chocolate?! Did you know, in relation to your Easter chocolates and their wrapping, you can recycle the foil? Follow Planet Ark's advice and scrunch it into a ball about the size of a golf ball or larger - so that it can be sorted correctly by council recycling machines (anything smaller will just slip through).
19.01.2022 Have you seen these?! Do you do the purchasing for your business or office? 18.01.2022 To wash or not to wash? THAT is the question! Did you know... There's no need to wash your plastic before dropping off to REDcycle, unless:... a) you are worried about the smell in your kitchen b) the plastic has oily or sticky residue Packaging materials should be empty and dry but our recycling processes can tolerate a limited amount of contamination (such as a few crumbs or a bit of dried gravy). Please ensure your plastics are dry as wet plastic creates a mould problem for us. ALSO squeeze pouches for baby/children's food are ok to REDcycle. Squeeze as much of the contents out as possible, and then please recycle with the lids on to prevent any residual yoghurt or baby food squirting out and causing other plastic to get mouldy.
17.01.2022 It's so incredibly important to get it right when it comes to recycling. And yes, it CAN be confusing. The video and links below will help to clear things up. Please share with your family and friends :) https://www.recycling.vic.gov.au//top-5-things-to-keep-out
17.01.2022 Supporting a circular economy!
16.01.2022 Orange, green, red or striped, it doesn't matter what colour your 'green bag' is. Did you know this kind of reusable 'green bag' can be recycled via the REDcycle Program? If you've got a polypropylene (PP) bag that's reached the end of its lifespan, it can be dropped off - base and all - to a REDcycle bin with your other soft plastic. To see what else you can REDcycle, check our list at https://www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/
16.01.2022 It's about demand. The supply is there - you all help with that every day. But we all can do better. Without the demand for the products made from recycled plastics (or any other material), recycling becomes a bit of a dead end. It's one thing to dispose of materials properly, but we must encourage councils and others to purchase the products made from the materials. Learn more about the Circular Economy.... https://youtu.be/kGNlmV8_8Wg In the coming weeks we'll share products that can be purchased by yourselves or your local councils to help :)
15.01.2022 Hello REDcyclers! Just a note to let you all know that we've made some changes to our 'What to REDcycle' page on our website. The main thing you'll notice is that we've removed the reference to the 'scrunch test' - with so many different compositions of materials on the market, this was no longer applicable as a 'general rule', and was getting confusing for people. So it's gone. Just to reiterate, it's not necessarily the best way to determine whether or not something can ...be REDcycled. Best to: 1. Check the packaging first for any sign of the new ARL symbols (find about more about these at https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/arl/). In the absence of one of these symbols (note these are gradually being rolled out to ALL types of packaging - this will just take a little bit of time)... 2. Check our list on our website https://www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/ 3. If you are still unsure, email us [email protected]

14.01.2022 Attention REDcyclers! As you all know, supermarkets have been under tremendous strain in the last few weeks, and no doubt the pressure will continue for some time. This situation is unprecedented, and we have to be mindful and considerate of the supermarket staff during this very difficult time. Of course their top priority is the overwhelming need to keep the shelves stocked, to serve you, and to keep everyone safe in the process. Please treat the staff and each other with... respect. Please ensure that the care and treatment of your loved ones, the elderly, and the vulnerable is our priority as a community. There have been no changes to the availability of REDcycle.
14.01.2022 Over the last few weeks weve been highlighting products that are available to the public that are made from the soft plastics you return via our REDcycle bins. 07.01.2022 Supporting a circular economy in Australia Yesterday the Federal government announced their $1 BILLION WASTE AND RECYCLING PLAN TO TRANSFORM WASTE INDUSTRY. The Morrison Government will commit $190 million to a new Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) that will generate $600 million of recycling investment and drive a billion-dollar transformation of Australias waste and recycling capacity. ... This will mean: More than 10,000 jobs will be created Over 10 million tonnes of waste diverted from landfill to the making of useful products as Australia turbo charges its recycling capacity. Australias waste and recycling transformation is being further strengthened by an additional: $35 million to implement Commonwealth commitments under Australias National Waste Policy Action Plan, which sets the direction for waste management and recycling in Australia until 2030. $24.6 million on Commonwealth commitments to improve our national waste data so it can measure recycling outcomes and track progress against our national waste targets. The introduction of new Commonwealth waste legislation to formally enact the Governments waste export ban and encourage companies to take greater responsibility for the waste they generate, from product design through to recycling, remanufacture or disposal (Product Stewardship). The moves are part of a national strategy to change the way Australia looks at waste, grow our economy, protect our environment and reach a national resource recovery target of 80% by 2030. As we cease shipping our waste overseas, the waste and recycling transformation will reshape our domestic waste industry, driving job creation and putting valuable materials back into the economy, Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said today. Australians need to have faith that the items they place in their kerbside recycling bins will be re-used in roads, carpet, building materials and a range of other essential items. Australian companies are turning plastics and household waste into furniture, decking, fencing and clothing, and we are developing new domestic markets for recycled materials by setting national standards for recycled content in roads and making recycled products a focus of procurement for infrastructure, defence estate management and general government purchasing. Our targeted investment will grow Australias circular economy, create more jobs and build a stronger onshore recycling industry. For the full media release, see https://www.miragenews.com/1-billion-waste-and-recycling-p/
07.01.2022 Continuing our circular economy / pull-through theme... Did you know that the soft plastics you return to your supermarkets also become part of a recycled road base? The raw material goes to our partners at Close the Loop, who mix the soft plastics with toner from old printer cartridges. This is known as Tonerplas. This then goes to Downer, who further mix it with glass, which creates Reconophalt, a more durable surface for our roads that wont require as much maintenance o...ver the years! Find out more about this at https://www.roads.eco/faq/ How great would it be if more councils used this material?!
07.01.2022 That's right, 1 billion pieces! That's 4150 tonnes diverted from landfill. Not a bad effort from a mum who was concerned that she had no option at that time to dispose of her soft plastic packaging other than to send it to landfill. REDcycle remains the only programme of its kind in Australia to address this need :)
07.01.2022 Please feel free to share :) Further to last weeks post, this is a reminder that there are no changes to the availability of REDcycle bins in stores. Bins may be moved occasionally for a variety of reasons, however both Coles and Woolworths remain committed to REDcycle in stores. ... If you have any questions, please speak to the Store Manager. Thank you for treating the staff and each other with respect.
