25.01.2022 Recently I hosted the beautiful Cece and her husband Tommy and their adorable little boy, visiting from China. I love it when my guests want to share a meal - new taste sensations, new conversations, new friends.

25.01.2022 This workshop is now booked out. But message me to get on the wait list - any cancellations and the next up is in! Congratulations, crew - see yall Saturday fortnight

24.01.2022 The waitlist from the first life model training course had their workshop today, and Im very proud of all of them, and delighted to say that The Art and Business of Life Modelling produced another five happy graduates. One thing I forgot to do, though, was invite my photographers so you have only Als snaps on my iPhone - one from the morning, one from the afternoon. Theres currently a waitlist of two for the next session. Get in touch.

23.01.2022 I often send my guests to Wendy Whiteleys Secret Garden, but until today Ive never explored it myself. Today Al and I took a picnic and wandered around the magical pathways of this precipitous stretch of twice-reclaimed land, an enchanting retreat created over years by a grieving widow, artist and mother. It is, of course, a magnificent work already, but yet a work in progress. Wendy was there today, weeding and digging.

22.01.2022 detail of the pinboard in the guest room where guests are invited to leave a memento of some kind

22.01.2022 I dont usually put Bondi very high on my must-see list when guests ask for recommendations, but while this mural is up, I will.

22.01.2022 Recently the Art Asylum hosted three beautiful Japanese girls, Riku, Marina and Risako. They come from near Tokyo and are holidaying on Australias east coast. Now theyre in Cairns.

22.01.2022 I cannot make my shitty photo look anything like as lovely as this work of leadlight art looks in real life. Thank you Dennis (electrician, pictured), John Wright (King St Newtown) who sold it to me, and the unknown artist who made it I shall have to have a dinner party.

19.01.2022 Redfern Art Asylum is delighted to announce that thanks to the sterling folk at the Australian Computer Museum Society, the Office in the Dressing Room is now functional again! You can see why it might get out of hand here, cant you? Couple of years ago I was forced to move the desk into the dressing room for tax reasons (oh, the irony), and it never worked. I took the laptop all over the house - I would write, pay bills etc on the dining table, lounge, bed, terrace - anyw...here but the desk. It was under a window - wrong, wrong, stupid: bad light, bad view, bad feng shui. Desk became a dumping spot. Rescue came from an unexpected quarter. A friend offered me a late-2013 iMac, courtesy of his involvement with the ACMS. I realised I had no choice but to pull half the room apart and move the desk to the only place it could work - the perfect place. This picture might look a little crowded to you - it looks excitingly compact, efficient and functional to me Im so thrilled to have my office back (and off the dining table). Thank you, computer boffins - and people, if youd like to help the Society get a national computer museum up and running (no, there isnt one. Weird, huh?), get in touch - www.acms.org.au

19.01.2022 One spot left at the July 6 workshop - be quick!

19.01.2022 Just letting you know, there is now ONE PLACE left in this workshop. Further interested parties will go on a waiting list for the next (as yet un-set) date. Message Jaqi Pascoe to reserve a spot!

18.01.2022 Im delighted to be able to say that yesterdays workshop was a great success, and six happy graduates went out into the world equipped to make an income giving the artists of Sydney and beyond just what they need from a life model. Several of them chose to book themselves a gig or two before they left, and all of us had a fun, fascinating day. The waitlist for the next one is two-thirds full already, which is to say there are two more places available. Message Jaqi Pascoe to get your name on the list - Ill be announcing a date later this week, itll probably be around the end of the month. Heartfelt thanks to my support angels Al, Paula and the irrepressible Colin Henderson.

18.01.2022 Sometimes the sweetest of lunatics take over the Asylum... Four young travellers from Hong Kong (and their friend whos living here on a work visa) filled the Art Asylum with love and laughter and Cantonese. Theyre city-hopping around Australia seeing as much as they can in a short holiday - highlights so far include the Blue Mountains and Sydney Fish Markets

18.01.2022 I love it when one of my guests turns out to be a photographer. Theyre inspired by my home, and Im inspired by their vision. They get to wander around making treasured images to capture their travel experience, and I get to see my own day-to-day environment in a new light. Thanks, Olivia Li!

18.01.2022 We harvested chives today. Want some? Drop by.

16.01.2022 After four years as a popular Airbnb guest room, the big front bedroom at Redfern Art Asylum is about to get a long-term resident. Big changes are afoot. So Ive just disassembled the legendary guest souvenir pinboard. My haul (besides a boxful of cards, testimonials and useful/odd/pretty objects): 100 Venezuelan bolivares... 1000 Japanese yen 2000 Indonesian rupiah 100 Cambodian riels 2000 Vietnamese dong 20 Swedish kronor 2 Singaporean dollars 10 South African rand 1 American dollar 11 Chinese yuan and 1 unit of an Asian currency with no country name on it... plus... 3 condoms A tiny tube of toothpaste Assorted packaged snack foods A pair of childs knickers still tube-packed from a vending machine and... Ten odd socks. See more

15.01.2022 Pretty excited here today because Ive booked the electrician to come and change my dining room light fitting to accommodate this large, exquisite, vintage Tiffany-style lampshade, pictured here still in the little antique shop I bought it from, John A. Wright on south King St, Newtown. Wrestled with myself for weeks, I did. Spent money I shouldve saved for more important things. But this beauty will honestly give me joy every time I look at it. After 20 years enduring a fluorescent strip on the dining room ceiling, I cant wait to see this work of art illuminated above the table.

15.01.2022 Please share widely Price below is per month. Big furnished room in large well-equipped apartment, cheap rent. ... Would suit couple with small child.

15.01.2022 My recent guests from Taiwan, the delightful Mingting and Cherry and their lovely mama Amy, are now (after a flying visit to Melbourne) heading west on the Great Ocean Road. Happy travels, adventurers

14.01.2022 My guests fed me tonight - delicious Vietnamese stir-fried beef with rice, and a tofu and vegetable soup. I forgot to take a photo till afterwards

14.01.2022 Say goodbye to #DIYVivid. The new tenant will use the rugs and a few pieces of furniture, and wants to keep the wall decor for the moment. But a light show, however modest, might be a bridge too far.

11.01.2022 Its on! The much-anticipated life-modelling workshop is happening soon. Limited places are still available - message Jaqi Pascoe to reserve your opportunity to get into a fun, creative industry.

11.01.2022 Today, rummaging in the tubs and buckets beside the washing machine, I found this. Its mate has long since left the country, I fear. Its going on the pinboard.

11.01.2022 Planning a night in town during the first two weeks of December? Redfern Art Asylum guest room is currently discounted $10/night - available dates in that fortnight only. Grab it while you can!

09.01.2022 Deconstruction of a long-standing (evolving) display wall now begun. That big shrouded work has to go up out of the way before a big (private) party this weekend.

07.01.2022 WORKSHOP TIME! Redfern Art Asylum one-day workshops are coming soon. April 13 - The Art and Business of Life Modelling... May 18 - Foundations of Life Drawing NUMBERS ARE STRICTLY LIMITED! Full details to come, participation will cost $140/120 March Earlybird special $99

07.01.2022 Still two places left for tomorrows workshop. Go on, do it.

06.01.2022 Tonight I have some new guests from Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province in China. Haikou is a port town just south of the southernmost tip of mainland China, on Hainan Island; the largest of the group of islands that makes up Hainan province. Geologically, Hainan Island broke away from Vietnam many millions of years ago; culturally, its a bit of a romanticised frontier outpost, with a few different ethnic groups and a light, mild cuisine, an annual international surfing festival and a hot-air balloon challenge. It also has a really cool statue of the goddess Guanyin.

03.01.2022 It is with considerable frustration that I must announce the postponement of todays life modelling workshop. Two participants pulled out late yesterday, and this is a small-numbers event that already wasnt quite full. After a late-night consultation with the remaining participants, Ive decided to reschedule and wait for a full class. Stay tuned for the announcement of a new date later today. And this time, all participants must make at least part payment to reserve a place. On the upside, this time Ill give you longer notice - the next date will be at least six weeks ahead. More chance itll be free in your calendar, more time to pay the fee. I promise you, the experience will be worth the wait.

01.01.2022 Reorganised my studio recently. And also my inner sanctum (i.e., the dressing room cum office/study cum dispensary), but thats another story. Cant show you that till I get my in-tray under control.

01.01.2022 Counting down to 4pm tomorrow! If you can, please consider supporting me - the rewards are generous and you can join my patrons for as little as US$2/month.
