25.01.2022 Some reflections on NAIDOC Week 2020 from RLC's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Access worker. The 2020 NAIDOC Theme: Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first nav...igators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. 24.01.2022 Congratulations to UNSW Sydney Law academics Dr Michael Grewcock and Dr Vicki Sentas, who have received awards for research commissioned by RLC to reform unjust strip search law. Released in August 2019, the 'Rethinking Strip Searches by NSW Police' report looks at the operation of strip search laws across the country, exploring concerns around safeguards and transparency, and highlighting opportunities for law reform in NSW. The awards were issued at the inaugural Australian Legal Research Awards (ALRA), the first national award scheme of its kind in Australia for legal academics.

24.01.2022 This is fabulous! Gomeroi woman Rachael McPhail has come up with this incredible campaign to include First Nations place names in postal addresses. She is also calling for Australia Post to compile a database of traditional place names cross-referenced with postcodes, verified by elders in all the communities around Australia. "I want to try and make sure that we capture all of the accurate information before we lose the elders because they're the ones that hold all of the knowledge."

17.01.2022 A new report from the Mitchell Institute has used geographic data mapping to examine the dire impact of coronavirus travel restrictions on international student numbers in Australia, and the longer-term policy implications for the education sector and Australian cities more broadly. The report projects there will 300,000 fewer international students half the pre-coronavirus numbers in Australia by July 2021 if current travel restrictions remain in place. The report author predicts that losses to the economy related to international students will continue to grow, stating that the problem is bigger than just the education sector and that current policy responses may be having only limited impact. 13.01.2022 As the year draws to a close, it's important to recognise that the holiday season is not a time of celebration for everyone. 09.01.2022 This year, RLC uncovered shocking police statistics that show that NSW Police have conducted 271 strip-searches on children in the past two years. (More info: bit.ly/3h9SD6f) Ninety-six children were strip-searched in the last year alone, and a disproportionate number of those (20%) were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, including an 11-year-old child. Horrific stories of police strip searches continue to come to light, including from children who have been dir...ected to strip naked without the support of a parent or guardian present. You can help support our call for law reform to ensure young people and children are not exposed to harmful strip searches by donating to support our work. GIVE NOW: http://bit.ly/donate-rlc (Pictured: RLC's Police Accountability solicitor presenting a community legal education session on NSW strip search law).

09.01.2022 Sydney tenants are at risk of falling further behind on their rent amid the current lockdown, with concerns for how income losses will affect those already trying to pay off deferred rent from last year. Hundreds of thousands of renters had less than $500 in savings [before the pandemic], they couldn’t come up with money in an emergency and that hasn’t changed, if anything it’s gotten worse, ssys Leo Patterson Ross from the Tenants' Union of NSW. If you need support, contact RLC or your local tenants’ advocacy service for advice and referrals. Find your local service by entering your postcode here: https://www.tenants.org.au/

05.01.2022 The 2020 Family Matters Report report, which monitors the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care, highlights a continued escalation in the number of First Nations children removed from their families. The report found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children now make up 37% of the total out-of-home care population but are only 6% of the total child population in Australia. Furthermore, 81% of Indigenous children a...re on long-term guardianship orders and are thus at serious risk of permanent separation from their families, cultures and communities. Based on the current trajectory, the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care is projected to double by 2029. Our children are 9.7 times more likely to be living away from their families than non-Indigenous children, an over-representation that has increased consistently over the last 10 years. It is time to completely change this broken system that is not working for our kids, the Family Matters chair, Sue-Anne Hunter, said. Download the report here: bit.ly/338Ai3X
