16.01.2022 STRETCH AND STRENGTHEN EXERCISE PROGRAM: Each patient has a unique body, lifestyle and situation. Time is taken to understand you and your circumstances. The main objective is to optimize your health and give you better control over your wellbeing using a natural, preventative approach. An important component of your treatment is exercise. An individualised exercise program is tailored to your specific needs. This simple series of exercises will become an integral part not on...ly of getting well but staying well. Emphasis is on increasing the strength of your muscles and improving the flexibility of your joints. Recent research shows that a specialized exercise program is valuable for patients with persistent back and neck pain. In fact, studies show that the chance of reoccurrence can be reduced by as much as 80% by proper rehabilitation of the supporting muscles. Once your symptoms have been relieved, it is important to prevent similar problems arising in the future. We will talk to you to identify any strains that your body might be exposed to at work, at home or during activity. Building muscle strength will enhance your joint function and stability. 09.01.2022 YOUR FIRST VISIT: The consultation commences with a detailed history and a comprehensive, holistic examination of your health and wellbeing. From this, an individualized treatment program is discussed with you. Each patient has a unique body, lifestyle and situation. Time is taken to understand you and your circumstances. The main objective is to optimize your health and give you better control over your wellbeing using a natural, preventative approach.... The first part of the treatment is focused on the muscles of the body. Through our muscle testing and palpation we can identify areas of muscle strain, tightness & weakness. A variety of soft tissues techniques (massage therapies) are used to provide correct muscle balance, pain relief, improved circulation and stress relief. Massage therapy incorporated with a good diet, exercise and good posture, promotes a healthy body and mind. Massage also assists with the elimination of toxins, improving blood supply and circulation, stimulation of the lymphatic system and improved joint mobility. One of our main goals is to identify and correct any restrictions or misalignments throughout the body, especially the vertebral column. Virtually every cell in our bodies is controlled by our nervous system. Messages from our brains travel down our spinal chord and out through the spinal nerves to supply our muscles, bones, skin and organs. Close attention is paid to other aspects of the your life that could be impacting on your health including diet, environment, your work, stress factors and physical activity. An integrated holistic program is recommended which empowers you to achieve and maintain wellness. Supplementation of specific vitamins or minerals may be recommended to help speed up the healing process. Treatment programs are rounded out with exercise therapy. A simple, specific set of exercises is prescribed to help speed up recovery and maintain your health through increasing core strength and stability and improving flexibility.
07.01.2022 ERGONOMICS: Ergonomics is the process of organizing and designing people’s workplaces, tailoring them to fit an individual’s needs. With an increasing percentage of our workforce spending extended periods of time using computers in a sedentary position, we need to try to minimize the stresses on our bodies by improving our working environments. Start by pushing your hips back into your chair as far as possible. Adjust the height of your seat so your feet are flat on the floor... and your knees at the same level or slightly lower than your hips. Your chair should have built in supports to maintain the curves in your spine. If your chair doesn’t have the appropriate lumbar and cervical supports, use an added back support or small pillow to maintain the cervical and lumbar curves. If your chair has an active back mechanism, utilize it regularly to make frequent positional changes. Adjust the armrests on your chair so that your shoulders are in a relaxed position. Your chair should be positioned as close to your keyboard as possible. Place the keyboard directly in front of your body. Adjust your keyboard height so your shoulders are in a relaxed position. Make sure your elbows are in a slightly flexed position - approximately 100 to 110 degrees - and your wrists and hands are in a neutral position. A footrest should be used if you find your feet are off the floor. Poor positioning of your screen or your documents will result in incorrect posture. Move your monitor and documents so that your neck is relaxed and in a neutral position. Make sure the centre of your monitor is directly in front of you, right above your keyboard. Place documents directly in front of you, between your screen and the keyboard. Now that your workstation is set up correctly, always try to use good work habits. Prolonged static work postures may cause a decrease in blood and nerve flow throughout your body, which can cause tightness in muscles and stress. Make sure to take short stretch breaks every 20 minutes. Always try to get away from your computer during lunchtime. At every opportunity, get up from your desk and move around. Make sure the small of your back has an appropriate support and that your shoulders are in a relaxed position. Ensure you use minimum force while striking the keys with your fingers. Take regular breaks from your work to give your body a chance to rest and recover. Alternate between different work tasks. This will help by using different muscle groups, thereby reducing stress and avoiding overuse. Close your eyes for a moment and focus on a faraway object. This will help you avoid eyestrain. Always try to avoid long periods of repetitive activity. photo by Andrew Neel
