23.01.2022 The Australian Plants Society Group - Newcastle Area have shared this PDF as a guide on what are generally reliable plants for the Newcastle Area. The full PDF is available on the website - https://austplants.com.au//N/Plant%20Guide%20Newcastle.pdf As well as a list of plants, It provides attributes on each of the plants that can further help to decide on what plants to use for different situations.

23.01.2022 We received this request from Melanie Muddle, a photographer and resident of Brown Street, for a very well worthwhile project for Redhead that you have an opportunity to support. An Unscripted Pause I’m writing to see if you’d like to take part in a documentary photography project that I have started in our suburb during this strange time. I’m a local Newcastle photographer from Brown Street in Redhead. I’ve started a project called An Unscripted Pause that aims to capture a ...visual narrative of our community, our common ground and our diversity wrapped in the time and space of the COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to photograph people from our community either in front of their homes, in their back yard (via their rear lane) and out the front of their businesses. In addition, I’d like to collect some hand written insights into how people have found this time, the things they have struggled with and the moments that have been positive. My goal is to create a creative visual, historic representation of a time that we hope will never be repeated. How do people get involved? Interested people can: 1. Send me an email at [email protected] so that I can get people’s details and arrange a time to visit them. 2. Arrange a time over the next two weeks in the late afternoon (3 - 5pm) that I can visit to take a photograph. 3. Feel relaxed about being themselves. This is a documentary project that aims to capture real life. People just need to wear their normal clothes - no need to dress up, clean up and over prepare. The more authentic, the better. 4. Allow 30-60 minutes. I’ll come and visit (following all social distancing rules) and take a few photographs. I’ll have the participants email address so that I can send them a high-resolution digital copy of their photograph/s. 5. Sign an electronic or paper 'Talent Release Form’ (depending on their preference), which allows their photograph to be used as part of this collective documentary project. It’s possible that I may exhibit images in the future or share them with organisations storing images from this time (e.g. the Newcastle Museum). The images may be featured on my professional Instagram / Facebook and on my website when it is complete. 6. If they are willing, provide a hand written insight into life at this time and its impact. How are they feeling, what changed in their world, what were their fears, what were the positives, what would they want to share with future generations? I will photograph this insight to include as part of this story. I feel that it’s important to create a local record of this time and I’d be honoured if you’d like to participate in the project. Best wishes, Melanie Melanie Muddle | THE SERIAL NARRATIVE Photographer | Content Creator | Brand Shaper We think is a great project and we encourage as many people as possible to contact Melanie on email |[email protected] or Phone 0429 174 774 to get involved.

22.01.2022 Ben knows the work and lobbying that we have done over a long period of time to get some action and protection for Nine Mile Beach and the Belmont Wetlands State Park and he is fed up!! Aren't we all. https://www.tracksmag.com.au//how-my-local-beach-became-a-

20.01.2022 AND the good News is: THE PHONES HAVE BEEN RESTORED at at 21 April 2020 AND the 'flu vaccine for over 65s has arrived. You will be able to phone the usual number for the Redhead Surgery to make a booking. A relief for many and especially for the Doctors. The information in this post from Dr Martin and Redhead General Practice WAS CURRENT as at Friday 17 April 2020. Unfortunately the phones at the surgery were not operating and the vaccines for Over 65s had not arrived.... THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY from Dr Martin of Redhead General Practice Please share- Please tell your family, friends and neighbours. Dear Redhead Community, Redhead General Practice would like to apologize to everyone who has tried to call us over the last 2 weeks. Our phone lines are down and we are waiting for the urgent delivery of parts. We are still working as usual, phone consultations are preferred where possible. We are available for face to face appointments if needed. During this time consultations can be booked on line or through our Charlestown office (4943 3166) or Windale Surgery (4948 5611). We are anticipating the arrival of the next batch of flu vaccines for over 65 year olds in the next 1-2 weeks and will arrange for flu clinics when they arrive. We do have Government funded vaccines available now for children 6 months to 5 years old and for people aged 5 years - 64 years with chronic medical conditions. Thank you for your patience and support during this time. Stay safe, Kathryn Martin and the team at Redhead General Practice.

18.01.2022 Wow. Wow. Wow! We have never seen an image like this before but we all know those days the waves reach past the tower!

16.01.2022 How My Local Beach Became a 4wd Park. Tracks mag. Not so green images!! A 4WD Park and Northern dune at Third Creek increased erosion from 2007 to 2018 Edit: We appreciate the debate and discussions commented on this post. We would like to clarify some points on this. This post leads on from a previous post on Redhead Sustainable Neighbourhood's page based on the Tracks magazine article and photo that appeared with it. See article here: https://www.tracksmag.com.au//how-my-l...ocal-beach-became-a- The readers pointed out that the photo in the article seemed 'greened up'. We did a simple google image search and there were plenty of photos to choose from that depicts the activity on the beach. Our position has always been that the Belmont Wetlands State Park needs more resources to address the needs of the whole community and the environment. That's what we have been working for! As it says in the Tracks article, what is the ideal scenario and compromise? We have edited the photos to add the dates. The first photo we believe is on an Australia Day possibly in 2018.

16.01.2022 Redhead General Practice is OPEN to help the Community. See the message from Dr Martin for details and SHARE.

14.01.2022 How great is this?

13.01.2022 Sometimes when you concentrate on the money you miss what else is important.

13.01.2022 This may interest you?

13.01.2022 Can anyone help the U12s soccer team this year?

13.01.2022 Concentrating on the money may have led us to miss a very important and interesting animal often seen in the leaf litter in our bushland. A Phasmid or Stick Insect (most likely Podocanthus wilkinson). I wonder how many survived the catastrophic bushfires?

13.01.2022 We have been approached by concerned locals walking along the Fernleigh Track this week. They have noticed vandalism of our local bush land (see screenshot of map pictured for location) and as you can see from the attached photos a lot of destruction has occurred. We live in such a beautiful area and we just wanted to express how much we value our unique bush land. We have attached photos of the beautiful native flowers found in this area, some of which are endangered. Council has been informed and a ranger has inspected the site. Let's protect our surrounding flora and fauna and keep Redhead beautiful Does anyone know how this happened?

12.01.2022 Here is another one of our lovely volunteers - Jodie! Do you also want to give back to our community? We welcome new members and encourage all ages!

12.01.2022 It would be cool to find this surfer

11.01.2022 Thank you Lisa and Donna for spending time with us today. Supporting our local school is a priority and we are proud of our connection. Many exciting things to come! Stay tuned. - Colin and Jodie

10.01.2022 FYI - let's work with the Belmont Wetlands State Park. A must read of you're camping at 3rd Creek this weekend.

09.01.2022 Woohoo! This is our Col!

08.01.2022 Kids and Bikes There has been a group of parents working hard to provide a solution for the Kids and Bikes and they provide this for your consideration. Let's have a big response to the survey on line or visit the pop up focus session on this Thursday Webb Park at 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. I was wondering if you might be able to promote the community engagement survey with LMCC in relation to the proposed Redhead BMX/Pump Track facility? See post above.... Proposed BMX/Pump Track Site Preference: As a number of people have asked, I thought I would outline our preference of sites and the reasons behind this. 1. Molly O’Connor Park: - currently vastly under-utilised - ability to retain an area for off leash dog walking - potential for further development to include facilities such as toilets, bubblers, seating, fitness stations - bus stops nearby - plenty of parking - lack of traffic congestion - plenty of safe enabling a larger facility to be constructed 2. Webb Park: - significantly crowded particularly on weekends - limited parking, often already reaches capacity due to beach access for dog walking, play equipment, parties, barbecues etc - potential for toddlers to wander across from existing play equipment into the path of bicycles - smaller site meaning a smaller facility 3. Liles Oval - it would require many local kids to cross the busy and very dangerous Kalaroo Rd - very little passing traffic to monitor the site creating the potential for antisocial behaviour - inability for the soccer club to expand and create further soccer fields into the future I hope these pointers help you make an informed decision. Of course there will always be additional pointers for and against and we realize everyone is entitled to their opinion. We are simply including our opinions for those of you who have recently requested them. "Concerned parent."

08.01.2022 Little Libraries Our Little Library at 19 Beach Side Cafe has been remounted and reloaded and is awaiting your visit. Bring a book, take a book or just have a look. The other little library on the corner of Ebsworth Street and Cowlishaw Street is also very popular. Pay a visit. A big thank you to Tim and the Little Library team.

04.01.2022 Australia's Environment Report 2019 There is a great deal of improvement urgently required. https://www.wenfo.org/aer/

04.01.2022 Snap Back Bounce Back -Crossing the Bridge Work out what things that you have been doing during this ‘lockdown and COVID19 virus crisis, to improve your personal and community relationships and what changes you have made to benefit the environment and to be more sustainable. Have you helped a member of your family, a friend or neighbour to cope with the isolation, prevented the transmission of diseases like colds, flu, gastric upsets,... reduced your energy use at home, decreased your use of a car, rode a bicycle more, supported our local businesses, helped to decrease your’s and the Nation’s Carbon emissions by something like 20%, relied more on locally produced food, started a home vegetable garden planted more plants, only purchased things that you need, used paper towels and toilet paper more wisely recognized the value of household goods that you previously may have wasted. decreased your waste production, used and appreciated the natural areas around our village? If you are wondering why we need to make a bigger and better effort after the current crisis. Take a look at the report from Australian National University Australia’s Environment in 2019. In every aspect there is a great deal of room for improvement. We can Snap Back Bounce Back Cross the Bridge but it does NOT have to be TO the way it was BEFORE with such terrible impacts on the environment.

03.01.2022 We are calling on all eastern Lake Macquarie locals with fever or recent onset respiratory symptoms to contact their GP, private pathology laboratories, or the ...free COVID-19 clinics at Belmont or John Hunter hospitals for screening. This advice follows the identification of three COVID-19 cases in eastern Lake Macquarie region with an unknown source of infection. We are focussing on testing residents from Valentine, Belmont, Mt Hutton, Windale and Croudace Bay. The Belmont Hospital Clinic is a drive-through service where people are screened via phone before presenting. For screening, please call 4923 2211 between 8am-4.00pm, seven days a week. The John Hunter Hospital Clinic is currently operating seven days per week, Monday through Sunday, from 8am-10.30pm. Signage at the hospital’s main entrance will direct people to the nearby screening station. We are also operating clinics at Calvary Mater Newcastle, Maitland, and Manning hospitals. Identifying any additional local cases early and implementing appropriate isolation and quarantining is crucial in preventing onward transmission in the community.

03.01.2022 Edit: Home safe and sound! This pupper was found in The Grange this aft ernoon. A chain collar and no tag. Please contact us if this is your dog. We will pass on the details to Nicola who found this gorgeous dog. Hope we can find his owners soon.

03.01.2022 An Unscripted Pause Thanks to all those who have already supported Melanie with her photography project. She will welcome more.

02.01.2022 Please see the Urgent Message from Dr Martin. Redhead General Practice is OPEN they just have had a phone breakdown.

02.01.2022 ...and now our Berit! Please read about our passionate member!

02.01.2022 If you have started to read Tim Flannery's book The Climate Cure then I don't need to tell you what we are headed for and how we can work together to avoid it, starting right now. Can we be smart enough to work out a tax which is not a disincentive for the pollution reducing urgent introduction of e-vehicles. Urge your elected representatives to get their thinking caps on.

01.01.2022 In case you were wondering what was going on on Oakdale Road! This sounds wonderful!

01.01.2022 G’day guys, I just wanted to say on behalf of our group a massive WELL DONE!!! On the weekend we seen some awesome weather and plenty of people enjoying the ar...ea. Myself and Brodes done a run from the entrance at Jewells to Third creek then south to Belmont South. In that run all we could find was one broken camp chair and half a bag of rubbish. Great work legends!!! It definitely ain’t hard to clean up after yourself as well as use our #1bag1vehicle theme and remove any waste you come across. Guys 1 thing I will ask and continue to talk about over the summer is to bring your own toilet when visiting/camping on the beach. When I say I’d love the place to be waste free I definitely include human waste. We need to make this a priority. All camping stores have a wide variety of camp toilets, talk to your local stores sales team and see what best suits your needs. We have ticked so many issues off the list in cleaning up this beautiful area this is next. We are in the process of creating our first beach clean up and bbq event for the season, please keep an eye on the page for details. We appreciate everyone’s continued support of this page and the support of our sponsors and volunteers. It’s going to be a great summer, we can’t wait to rip in. #1bag1vehicle #takes2seconds2bagit #prideinourbackyard Cheers Franko
