12.01.2022 Dysphagia can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. It increases the risk of aspiration pneumonia, choking, malnutrition, and dehydration. Dysphagia can lead to unplanned weight loss, fatigue and lethargy. It may also increase the risk of or impair the healing or pressure injuries. Dysphagia lead to a loss of appetite or withdrawal from social situations which were once pleasurable such as dining with family and friends. A proper assessment of a person’s swallowing and nutritional needs can reduce the negative impacts of dysphagia and improve a person’s safety and quality of life.
