18.01.2022 Whilst working with a tool manufacturer in Virginia, Isaac Merritt Singer came across a sewing machine in need of repair. Finding this sewing machine clumsy and unreliable, Singer put his efforts into building a better machine and after only eleven days he finished his first prototype. Singer took out his first patent in 1851, and in 1853 the first Singer Perpendicular Action Sewing Machine was offered for sale all over America. | Visit our Textile Collection today, 10:00-15:30 Mon-Sun.

16.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC Week 8th - 15th November 2020 The Quandamooka people live on the islands and coast of Quandamooka, known as Moreton Bay. They sourced food from the seas and freshwater creeks, and hunted animals and birds from the surrounding bushland. Although the suburbs that can be found in Quandamooka country were named by white settlers, the indigenous names for these places still live on. The coastal areas of Quandamooka are Nandeebie or Indillie, which encapsulate...d suburbs of Cleveland, Thornlands, Ormiston and Alexandra Hills. The suburbs of Wellington Point, Birkdale and Thorneside were originally known as Cullen Cullen. Victoria Point is Warrer Warrer (meaning mussel), whilst Capalaba is extremely similar to its indigenous name of Kapallaba. Jungalpin or Tungipin (meaning west wind) is the suburb of Mount Cotton, and Sheldon is Joonggabbin. The islands off the coast of Redland City also have indigenous names. Stradbroke Island’s indigenous name is Minjerribah, Russell Island is Canaipa, Macleay Island as Jencoomercha, Took Roo Ra for Peel Island, and Coochiemudlo Island derived from its indigenous name of Goochie Mudlo. #NAIDOCWeek2020 #quandamookacountry Sources: Redlands Coast Timelines: Council https://redl.sdp.sirsidynix.net.au//en_AU//asset/1006673/0 Redlands Coast Stories: Place Names https://redl.sdp.sirsidynix.net.au//en_AU//asset/1006793/0 Places of the Redlands series by Mary Danny Howells Image from Arts Qld https://www.arts.qld.gov.au//fes/quandamooka-festival-2015

09.01.2022 Death Everyone, even Death, has a simple little black dress for special occasions. He loves his job but doesn’t get out much; most of his social invitations are to funerals, so a real social mingle with the living is a treat for him. Maybe not for the people he’s mingling with. When he’s around everyone suddenly remembers the importance of social distancing - a pity, really, sooner or later he’s everyone’s friend. Not necessarily on Facebook. Jan Nary conceived, wrote and ...directed 'When the Darkness Moves'. Since joining Sydney's New Theatre fifty years ago, Jan has indulged her love of theatre in acting, writing, adapting, directing, producing and wardrobe along with her work as a media professional. 08.01.2022 RINGMISTRESS ELEVATOR Remember the old department store elevators, operated by a real person? The rattle of the metal grill, the arc of the operating handle, the operator’s voice; First floor; ladies shoes, millinery, night attire and the tea room. So calm. This elevator doesn’t elevate, it plummets - and the operator isn’t a real person (just look at the photo) and she won’t take you to the tea room or anywhere else you really want to go...she’ll take you to places you’d ...much rather avoid. All aboard. And don’t bother with your GO Card, it won’t help you where you’re going. Jackie Wiley is a scientist by training and profession, a Sci-Fi and Fantasy buff by choice, a Morris Dancer for fun - and an actor by night. This role is perfectly suited to her training and taste. For many years Jackie inhabited the darkness backstage, being a profoundly efficient and self-effacing Stage Manager but a good dose of training in the Arts Thespianic shot her into the spotlight where she now thrives. She DID bring some of the darkness with her, though... Halloween Night Trail When the Darkness Moves Limited spots for 23 & 24 October Booked out 30th & 31st October www.redlandmuseum.org.au

06.01.2022 Farming in Victoria Point From the 1860s the land at Point Halloran was used to grow cotton, sugar, pineapples, custard apple trees, and staple vegetables such as cabbages, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots to name a few. Henry Scott, a cotton grower, owned all the land now known as Redland Bay, as well as land at Point Halloran. He grew cotton and later established a sugar plantation at Victoria Point. ... In 1877, the first school was established in the cottage Nura, which was owned and by Messer’s Raff & Nuttall. This early school house cottage was situated on Point Halloran Road near Tern Street. In 1916, the Wilson family bought land at Victoria Point, and established a pineapple plantation, and planted custard apple trees. Victoria Point became a popular holiday destination, and a small kiosk was opened to serve campers and day trippers to the Point. During World War II, the Women’s Land Army girls worked on farms at Victoria Point, and camped on Colburn Avenue. After the War, Victoria Point continued to grow in popularity as a tourist destination, and the local population increased as new business opened, new holiday flats were built, and service stations were established. The large farms of Point Halloran and surrounding Victoria Point were gradually subdivided, on which houses were built. These three photos from the Redland Museum eHive photographic collection depict Victoria Point & Point Halloran in the mid-1940s.
