17.01.2022 WOOL Wool is an amazing natural fibre. Composed of proteins, its complexity provides many features and benefits that man-made fibres could never replicate, offe...ring complete flexibility and superior performance characteristics. Fire resistant. Wool is difficult to ignite due to high water and nitrogen content. If you hold a match to wool, it will smoulder and then go out. It doesn’t melt, drip or give out poisonous fumes. And this means it’s considered one of the safest fibres for flooring and fabrics the perfect choice for the family home. Hard-wearing. Wool is an incredibly complex natural fibre, which means natural attributes that plastic fibres just can’t match. Wool has a left and right handed helix at its core, which works likes a spring, meaning it can continuously resist pressure and flattening. It can be bent many thousands of times and still spring back! And this is why wool is such a great fibre in carpets. Easy to care for. Wool’s natural oils and scaled structure trap dust and dirt at the top layers of the fibre, so it couldn’t be easier to keep clean with a quick vacuum around! The scales on wool are another amazing feature - they cause liquids to bead up and stay on the surface, helping to keep wool stain free. So if you’re quick, that red wine won’t leave a single mark! Sustainable. Wool is grown naturally on sheep. They live on and from the land, roaming freely in the countryside, and re-grow their fleece every year. This is in direct contrast to synthetic fibres, which need oil and refineries to be produced. Sheep grow wool continuously, and can be shorn every 6-12 months, meaning wool is rapidly and readily available. As long as there is grass for sheep to eat, wool can be produced. Hypoallergenic. Wool contributes to healthier air indoors by helping to absorb pollutants, like VOC’s, from the air. Allergens, such as dust, are also trapped in the outer scales at the top layer of the fibre, so instead of floating around and aggravating allergies, they can simply be vacuumed away.

07.01.2022 Wow! Wow! Wow! This is the best way to describe the Redlands Spinners and Weavers Boonah Retreat held on the 11, 12 and 13 August. It was a resounding SUCCESS!!! Such a fantastic bunch of crafters who had an absolutely wonderful time. I was getting repeated comments about the great food, the great location, the great bunch of attendees and how great the overall atmosphere was. We had four fantastic workshops. Simone from Gum Blossom Yarns generously provided an eco dyeing wor...kshop where we dyed silk hankies and silk scarves. She also gave an extra workshop on hand hammered flower bookmarks. These workshops were a huge success and everybody enjoyed learning about eco dyeing. We all thoroughly enjoyed making our creations however I know Simone put hours of preparatory work into the workshops and for that we were extremely grateful. Lindy held an amazing workshop on covering bottles with Angelina and inserting small coloured lights. I watched this workshop and was amazed how easy it was and how many took part in it. It was so popular that it was held over two days. Jan and Gillian’s workshops on Single Colour Brioche Mug Warmer and Tunisian Sampler Coasters were eagerly attended by crafters yearning to learn even more techniques. Our caterer/cook Jeanette was an overwhelming success. I’m pretty sure she was absolutely floored by all the compliments showered upon her. Our food was mouth-watering and plentiful. It’s definitely the best ‘camp’ food I’ve ever experienced. Everything was freshly made, abundant and so tasty. We were spoilt with four shops: Lindy’s amazing array of Ashford products, fibres and yarn, Simone’s beautiful eco dyed Gum Blossom Yarns, Judy’s woven goods and soap, and Melanie’s sewn project bags. We had perfect winter’s weather: lovely crisp nights and gorgeous sunny days. Each room housed two people and the rooms, main hall, verandah and eating area were all in the one building which everyone loved. Our thanks must go to Gillian and Sue for the overwhelming success of this camp. No detail was forgotten; it was organised and planned to perfection. The behind the scenes preparatory work certainly paid off. There is going to be a waiting list for next year’s camp as everyone wants to come back as well as some of our day visitors. We were all so happy to see each other again and meet new friends as this camp was attended by lots of new faces. Our thanks must also go to Paul who was initially our chief dish collector and dishwasher stacker however because of some issues with the dishwasher, Paul actually spent a lot of time in the kitchen washing dishes! His cheery disposition, obliging manner as well as his funny jokes were much appreciated by everyone. We also spotted Merhyl in the kitchen helping to clean up too. Thank you both. Thanks must go to Paul for lighting our camp fire on the Wednesday night while we watched the sun set. See you all next year!!!
