25.01.2022 Pony Club Wants to Hear from Boys... Patrick Perkins, 11, from Rathdowney Pony Club loves his pony Max and going to Pony Club. He especially enjoys the thrill o...f mounted games. But there are fewer boys than girls enjoying Pony Club and the national organisation is keen to find out why. Head over to the News & Stories to read the rest of the Article: https://bit.ly/31UTq4S

19.01.2022 Welcome to Summer! There’s nothing quite like riding in Australia over the sunny season, but how do we make sure we are looking after ourselves, each other and ...our horses? Here is some important information: *A day with high temperature, low humidity and reasonable wind is well tolerated by most horses. *The combination of high ambient temperature, high relative humidity and low wind greatly increases the risk. *Horses and people cool themselves by evaporation of sweat. *The effectiveness of this process is reduced on days of high thermal load (high temperature, high relative humidity, low wind). *Overweight horses are additionally challenged because they have increased body heat production and reduced body heat loss. So what temperature indicators should you use to decide whether or not to ride? The air temperature in degrees only measures dry bulb temperature and does not take account of other environmental factors. That is, the temperature included in weather reports does NOT provide a basis for assessing risks of heat exposure. The best available measure is the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. The WBGT considers air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and cloud cover. As you can see in the table, a WBGT score of 33 or more is extreme, making conditions unsuitable for horses and humans. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology publishes daily WBGT for regional locations. Please refer to the Pony Club Australia HOT WEATHER POLICY for BOM links and more information about risk factors, heat stress and management for humans and horses over summer, available on our policies page: https://ponyclubaustralia.com.au/about-us/resources/ #welfarewednesday #ponyclubaus #horse #care #welfare #riding #knowledge #science #wetbulb #WBGT #summer #hotweather #heatstress #alifewithhorsesstartshere

15.01.2022 Safety Tip Here's a handy road safety tip that is quick and easy to do. Even though your float may be white, that makes very little difference to how easily it ...is seen at night. You can make your float highly visible with five metres of self-adhesive reflective tape from a hardware store, like Pam Brookman did in this photo she has shared with us. Pam rode with Meningie Pony Club in the early 1960s where she got her D and C Certificate. She says that in those days, nobody even thought of reflective stuff on floats. In fact, most ponies came in the farm trucks if they weren't ridden to the grounds, and every Pony Club venue had to have an unloading ramp. Don't just think it is a good idea, why not get out and brighten up your float for night travel or grab some extra tape and make it an activity at your club or centre. Thanks Pam! #horsesafety #roadsafety #safeontheroad

13.01.2022 It's crafty Tuesday and here's a suggestion for keeping your saddle and stirrups clean and stop them rubbing - using a double oven mitt. You can either buy one ...from a store like Target or KMart, or make one yourself. If you want to try your hand at this, here's a video to help you. Note, you won't need the double insulation layers in the middle if you are not planning to use it to take hot items out of the oven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQD_7gNyKtE We are sure many of our members have great ideas for making or recycling horse products and could share a 'crafty Tuesday activity. We'd love you to send your ideas to us so we can share them! Send (with a photo if possible) to [email protected] or put in the comments below. #craftytuesday #stirrups #protectyoursaddle #handyhorsehint

08.01.2022 Study Suggests the More Riders a Horse Has, the Less Responsive it May Become Successful horse training depends on riders giving clear and consistent cues. When... cues are inconsistent, the horse may become confused, frustrated, or unresponsive. It is likely that each rider or horse trainer differs in the way they deliver training cues because humans vary in their weight, height, riding style, handedness, experience, and skill level. A study explored relationships between the number of people to ride or handle a horse and the horse’s response to training cues. Data describing 1819 horses and ponies were obtained from the Equine Behavior Assessment and Research Questionnaire (E-BARQ), an online global survey of horse owners and caregivers. The number of riders or handlers showed a significant relationship with two behavioural indices. Specifically, as the number of riders or handlers increased, horses were more difficult to accelerate and less difficult to decelerate, compared to horses with fewer riders or handlers. This could indicate that an increase in rider or handler numbers is associated with those horses becoming relatively more unresponsive to leg and whip cues than to rein cues...read more: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/11/1/66

08.01.2022 Pony Club Pathway For Rhys Lanskey, trying tetrathlon one day because it looked interesting has led to an Australian Championship and aiming for the 2024 Olympi...cs as a Modern Pentathlete. Rhys, from Redlands Pony Club QLD, won his first event and never looked back. He was spotted by Mark Taylor who encouraged him to continue training as he showed real talent. Now 19, Tetrathlon and Modern Pentathlon have taken Rhys to China, Poland, Bulgaria, Thailand and more. He is aiming for the Paris Olympics in 2024. He trains full time and also teaches at his family's riding centre. Rhys says being able to ride well is a definite bonus for this sport. Rhys Lanskey and Tully Watt (Emu Creek Pony Club) represented Australia at the UIPM World Junior Championships in Drzonkow, Poland in 2019. Rhys and Tully were the 2019 Australian Modern Pentathlon Senior Champions, and Rhys and Nikita Mawhirt (Swan Valley H&PC) were the 2020 champions. 05.01.2022 It's PCA Crafty Tuesday and now that coats are shedding we thought you might like to make a scratching post for your horse. All you need is a brush, broom head ...or even a doormat and something solid to attach them to. You can tie large broom heads to trees with twine for a quick, temporary set up (handy if you agist) or get to work with hammer and nail for something more permanent. Remember not to attach the scratchers to something you don't want your horse to bend, or anything where your horse might get their tail or legs caught (so avoid fences, gates or shelter/stable walls). Show us your scratching posts below! #horse #enrichment #coat #shedding #handy #buttscratcher #grooming #welfare #craftytuesday

05.01.2022 This drawing from "Horse Brain, Human Brain" went viral when it was posted on the Horse and Rider Books page. It generated 599 shares and 89 comments in a very ...short time. Horses don't see with as much sharp detail as humans do. That difference results in some startling images. Next time, you're galloping down to a jump, you might want to know what your horse sees. Then again, maybe not.... What do you think?

04.01.2022 Hendra Pony Club - Chris Wagner Memorial, Open Sports Day:

04.01.2022 Vale Di Schaeffer The Australian Equestrian community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Di Schaeffer. Di suffered a heart attack on Christmas night ...and was hospitalised. Despite Di’s resilience and strength, the challenges of the damage to her heart were too difficult to overcome and on Sunday 3 January 2021, Di passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Di, who was 77 years old, leaves a legacy to Equestrian and in particular Eventing. Mother of Olympian, Wendy Schaeffer, Chair of the ESA Eventing Committee and an SA Eventing Selector. Di was on the 1986 Australian Team for the Gawler World Championships and also competed at a high level for many years. She co-owned many horses, including Sunburst, who was Wendy’s mount at the Atlanta Olympics and a member of the Gold Medal winning team. Strong and resilient, Di was a woman who would rise up when others found it challenging. Still actively involved with horses, Di attended the recent event at Wallaby Hill in December. Travelling all the way over from SA with Wendy, Di drove most of the way to allow Wendy to sleep and rest before the event. Wendy rode Sun Quest (co-owned by Di) who placed 11th in his second only 3* event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Schaeffer and Equestrian family. She will be dearly missed. "RIP Di as she rides with the angels" A service to celebrate Di’s life will be held on her property, Sunning Hill, 10.30am Wednesday 13th January 2021.
