25.01.2022 WARNING- Heartworm Case diagnosed 21.12.2020 We are sharing this as an update to all pet owners, especially those with dogs, as we are seeing an alarming increase in positive Heartworm cases here in the Redlands. We currently have a very sick dog in hospital due to Heartworm infection. ... Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes so NO pet is immune! The mosquitoes this year are especially bad and we expect to see even more cases as the wet and humid weather continues. Whilst this post is primarily about dogs, it is important to remember that cats are also susceptible and need prevention if being allowed outside. Some important things to remember: If your dog is not up to date with their prevention, DO NOT give them an over the counter chewable preventive without seeking veterinary advice - the ingredients in these chews can cause rapid death of adult worms, resulting in a fatal blockage of major blood vessels The symptoms of Heartworm disease don’t show up until it is quite advanced - do not delay in seeking veterinary advice if your dog is not up to date with prevention or is showing any symptoms including coughing, lethargy and weight loss There is no natural cure or preventative for Heartworm. Daily checking of your dog will not help because the damage is all being done internally and will not be apparent until very extensive. The treatment for Heartworm is intensive, long and risky. As always, prevention is better than cure. Thank you to the gorgeous Billie for this photo below, provided by her family to help to raise awareness about this often forgotten condition. The dog we have in hospital is #rescuedog and is too sick for photos or to share specific details about, but please keep him and his wonderful new family in your thoughts

24.01.2022 World Kindness Day 2020 Such an important day to celebrate after the year everyone has had! Kindness - it costs nothing, yet means everything. Take the opportunity to remember the difference we can all make by spreading kindness, today and every day

24.01.2022 Congratulations Kasey on your GRADUATION ! Junior Nurse Kasey pictured here yesterday at her Year 12 Graduation with parents Sandy and David! We are so very proud of Kasey who, on top of working and multiple extra curricular activities, is an outstanding student who has been recognised on a number of occasions for her academic excellence. Kasey started with us doing some work experience, and we haven’t looked back She is an incredibly competent and dedicated Junior Veterinary Nurse who will no doubt go on to achieve great things in this industry. Well done Kasey and we hope you enjoy a well earned break after such a big year

24.01.2022 A fight for life Recently, Luna presented to see Drs Bec and Katria, after her family noticed a small puddle of what looked like blood on the floor of the bedroom. Even though they weren’t sure if it had come from Luna, they didn’t want to take any chances, and presented her for examination. Although Luna was in good spirits on initial presentation to the clinic, within 24 hours, our team knew something was drastically wrong, when Luna started to pass dark blood in her urin...e and became progressively weaker and more anaemic. After careful observation and a combination of clinical history taking and diagnostic tests, we established that Luna was suffering from onion toxicity, having helped herself to some spring onions growing in the garden several days before. Onion and garlic cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells, resulting in severe and life threatening anaemia and bleeding abnormalities. Symptoms of toxicity (weakness; blood in bodily fluids; pale gums; lethargy; collapse) are often delayed, especially when only small amounts are ingested. Luna required several days of intensive supportive therapy as well as a life saving blood transfusion from one of our wonderful donors. Her condition was very critical, and our team (who had become very attached to her!) worked tirelessly round the clock to pull her through. Luna has since made a complete recovery and we absolutely love our social visits with her She really is the sweetest dog with the most wonderful family, who are very relieved to have her home after such a scare our very deserving Pet of the Month!

23.01.2022 Happy Birthday Dr Charlotte!! We hope you have a wonderful day Dr Charlotte has been part of our REDVET Family since she was in high school, completing work experience as part of her Duke Edinburgh Award. She has been part of our veterinary team since 2014, and has a wealth of knowledge on all things general practice, medicine and surgery with a particular interest in dentistry. We and the #petsofredlands are very lucky to have Dr Charlotte as part of our team, and wish her a very Happy Birthday from all of her REDVET Family

23.01.2022 Wishing our (not so junior!) Nurse Kasey a VERY Happy 18th birthday!! It seems like just yesterday that a tiny and much younger Kasey started doing kennels and work experience at the clinic. Fast forward several years and she is an experienced, skilled and incredibly professional nurse that is an absolute asset to the clinic, and a credit to herself and her family. We hope you have a wonderful day Kasey!

20.01.2022 Poor Peanut found himself in hospital with us after eating a poisonous flower salad he wasn’t feeling too good and was admitted for observation and supportive medical treatment to offset the effects of the toxins. With the rain and warmer weather coming, poisonous flowers and toadstools will be popping up everywhere. If you think your pet has eaten or licked a poisonous plant, don’t panic. If you can get a sample of the plant or flower that’s always helpful, but it’s mor...e important to seek immediate veterinary advice, as early treatment is associated with better treatment outcome and reduced hospital time. Thankfully Peanut was feeling better in time to celebrate his 1st birthday - Happy Birthday Peanut and thank you for being such a great patient! @peanut_the_dashingcollie

17.01.2022 Feline Focus Month is in full swing here at REDVET! Many people find bringing their cat in to the vet a stressful experience and, as a result, will put off the exercise altogether. It is for this reason that we don't get to see your feline friend as often as we should and, unfortunately, it means that many health problems may go undetected. Tips to reduce vet visit stress:... Put the cat carrier in a room with your cat a few days before you need to use it Allow your cat to get used to the smell and noise of the carrier Associate the carrier with ‘happy’ things - place food and treats in the carrier Close the door of the carrier while your cat is inside for short periods of time so your cat doesn’t always associate it with vet visits Feliway pheromone spray can be used in the cat carrier to help your cat to feel more safe and secure Medication can be dispensed to help your cat feel more relaxed prior to their visit. We just need to have examined your cat within the previous six months - ask us for more information on how we can assist you with this If you have any questions or concerns about your cat's veterinary visit you should ask us for advice - and don’t forget about our CAT-Scan Special available this month!

It means we only have to remove teeth if necessary, and allows us to extract the tooth in the most efficient, leas...t traumatic and simplest way. Dr Charlotte is pictured here processing and evaluating x-rays on a pet in for a COHAT - comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment - something we perform daily here at the clinic. We are offering FREE dental health checks, 7 days a week with a BONUS voucher towards your pet’s dental procedure. Call us on 32077325 to book in now

15.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet weeing a wee bit more? A common reason for this is cystitis, which refers to an inflammation or infection of the bladder. Cystitis can be an irritating and painful condition, causing pets to urinate more often with blood even sometimes noticed in their urine. It’s crucial that you bring your pet in for a vet examination, so that diagnostic tests can be performed and treatment can begin to get your pet back to being their happy and comfortable selves.

15.01.2022 R U OK Day 2020 This year, in honour of this important day, we want to say THANK YOU. Thank you to all of the essential workers, who have worked non stop on the frontline during this pandemic.... Thank you to all those in the that stayed home when they could and who have abided by all COVID restrictions and requirements necessary to keep our community safe. Thank you to our amazing REDVET clients, who have continued to trust us with their precious pets at such a challenging time. And finally, thank you to our wonderful REDVET Team. They have worked tirelessly over the last several months, in the face of so much uncertainty, to continue delivering gold standard veterinary care to #petsoftheredlands. These are unprecedented times for sure. It’s so important to realise that people cope with uncertainty in different ways. You never know what someone is going through, or feeling. Be kind, always. And remember to ask the question, even if you think you know the answer - R U OK? You never know when it might be just the question someone needed to hear

15.01.2022 Dr Kat’s beautiful dog Trixie underwent major abdominal surgery this year due to an illness that was non responsive even to intensive medical management. A nasty abscess was found on her pancreas, causing secondary inflammation of all the surrounding tissue. The level of inflammation in the pancreas was stopping us from being able to get a clear image via ultrasound, which is why sometimes surgery is a big but necessary step to take. The abscess was drained and the da...maged tissue debrided, with a small amount of healthy abdominal tissue (omentum) sutured to the area of damage to improve blood supply and healing. She was then in intensive care with our team for several days before being allowed to come home and finish recovering. Trixie, who also suffers from IBD, is now on an extremely strict diet to keep her pancreas from flaring up. She has benefited greatly from some of the new novel protein diets on the market, which help to eliminate common allergens like beef and chicken entirely from the diet. We are very lucky here at Redlands to have a purpose built hospital and dedicated surgery team who were able to give Trixie the level of care that she needed. Dr Kat was still in lockdown, but knew that Trixie was in the best place, even if it was hard for her to have the shoe on the other foot for once! Trixie is now doing extremely well, and back to her duty of guarding her favourite person, little Carter See more

14.01.2022 We will be closed from 5pm tonight (Thursday, December 17th) and re-open at 8am tomorrow (Friday, December 18th) for our Annual Team Christmas Dinner Party. A chance to thank our team for another wonderful year here at the clinic, albeit with the challenges of COVID. Stay tuned for photos, and Merry Christmas

14.01.2022 Doulton pictured just after receiving his booster F3 vaccination, to provide ongoing protection against Feline Panleukopaenia, Feline Rhinotracheitis Virus and Feline Calicivirus. This is a core vaccine, and recommended for all cats. Even though Doulton is an exclusively indoor cat, he still receives regular booster vaccinations. Why? The diseases that the F3 protects against are highly infectious and can be spread both directly (ie from outdoor cats that may poke around out...side, with potential access through screen doors and windows) and indirectly, via clothing, shoes and other owner belongings. Additionally, if he were to need sudden hospital or cattery admission, he would need to be up to date in his protection, as it takes 7-10 days for a full immune response to be established. If you have any questions about what vaccinations your kitten or cat requires, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Doulton was very brave for his needle, and enjoying a post injection feast of greenies which is sure to be followed by a long snooze

14.01.2022 EKKA Week is always a big one for our whole team. Many of our team members and clients exhibit at the show, and our REDVET Family normally enjoy a night in at the Stockman’s Bar and Grill, catching up with friends and enjoying the country music and show hospitality. This year, EKKA Online is doing a great job of bringing the show to life. Our very own Super Groomer Kylie, normally a keen competitor at the show, spoke to EKKA about life with poodles. Her very handsome Leroy ...(also a multi champion himself) was an absolute star - we think they are both made for TV! Check out the video by clicking out the link below: https://youtu.be/BF9TrTIZSyE Thank you @theekka for keeping the spirit of the show alive!

13.01.2022 Happy Gotcha Day Dante! Cockatiels make such wonderful family pets, and Dante is no exception! Little Carter absolutely loves birds and the team at Redlands Produce - Pets & Garden were kind enough to let Dr Kat adopt one of their hand raised babies for Carter. They have developed such a bond and Dante is a much loved family member! Birds may seem like an ‘easy’ pet option, but they actually have quite complex dietary, environmental and husbandary needs, so it’s import...ant to do your research before adding a bird to your family. These days, we know so much more about how to keep our pet birds happy and healthy, and all of our vets undergo additional training to learn about their specific needs. Dr Kate has a particular interest in Avian Medicine, so please don’t hesitate to phone us if you need advice! Enjoy your celebrations today Dante See more

13.01.2022 Max and his EAR Infections Max had been seeing us for a chronic ear infection, triggered by underlying allergies and associated skin and immune problems. He developed a nasty mixed bacterial and yeast infection that kept flaring despite extensive treatment and attempts at conservative management. To give Max some permanent relief, we performed a Lateral Ear Canal Ablation Surgery, commonly known as a Zepp Procedure.... The Zepp Procedure removes part of the vertical ear canal, creating an ear open that is more like the opening of a human ear - straight in. The result is improved drainage and ventilation, reducing the incidence of infection and making cleaning and other management strategies easier to implement. Max has been a model patient and our very deserving BRAVECTO November Pet of the Month Winner See more

08.01.2022 Misty’s blood donation saved a life on Friday night! Blood transfusions in pets are needed more more commonly than many people realise. Bleeding from trauma, masses, infections, toxins and more can be life threatening, and sometimes the only thing that will save that life is a transfusion of blood from a generous donor.... Misty donated blood for a dog who was undergoing major surgery due to a ruptured mass on his spleen. The mass was bleeding out in to his abdomen and had to be removed, along with the whole spleen. He is since recovering well, no doubt in no small way thanks to Misty’s super red blood cells! Missy was very spoilt during and after her donation, and is pictured here having a good sleep after a big day. Thank you to the Knight family for generously allowing Misty to donate and save a life

08.01.2022 Next round of classes begin Saturday November 14th! The 8am class is BOOKED OUT and only limited spots remain for the 9.30am class so book now to avoid missing out! Tweenie class date and time coming soon

07.01.2022 Today, we channeled the spirit of the show with these iconic EKKA Strawberry Sundaes The sale of these traditional icecreams usually raises much needed funds for vital medical research, so this year, The Common Good (an initiative of the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation), put their thinking caps on. The result was these fantastic DIY packs, which could be pre ordered and enjoyed at home or work. The team were thrilled to still be able to partake in this wonderful traditi...on, and the clinic was very pleased to be able to buy a pack to support such critical medical research Celebrating EKKA anyway possible, 2020 style

06.01.2022 One final look at our EKKA Memories before the show closes for another year. We are already counting down to 2021

06.01.2022 Misty is our September BRAVECTO Pet of the Month! Misty presented for vomiting, abdominal pain and a fever. Blood results and abdominal imaging showed evidence of an inflammatory/infectious process, and Misty was taken to emergency abdominal surgery with Dr Charlotte. Abdominal surgery is a major procedure, and in Misty's case, proved to be life saving. She had suffered from a complete rupture of her gastric wall, which had allowed abdominal contents to escape in to t...he abdominal cavity. Her body had done its best to heal the perforation, but during the attempted healing process, a number of problems developed. Misty was suffering from a life threatening abdominal infection, as well as having several areas of major primary and secondary damage to her bowels, lymph nodes and fat tissue. She needed extensive surgery to repair the damage, and was in hospital for several days in intensive care following the procedure. Misty is an absolute supermodel and we loved having her in the clinic - and more importantly, we are very pleased to report that she is now doing very well. 05.01.2022 A very successful weekend with the baby of the team, Heathmont Flirt, at the North Queensland Show Horse Championships She was awarded not only the Grand Champion First Season Horse, but also the Open and runner up Child’s Championships This means she has qualified for the 2021 Grand National Championships - a huge feat for such a young horse with only a few shows under her belt! Unfortunately Practice Manager Abbey had to be content with cheering on from the sidelines... this time, as she is nursing a broken finger. Heathmont Flirt was beautifully ridden by Paul Austin, and we would like to thank him, Mark Lilley and their team at Paul Austin Equitation for their ongoing support and guidance. A shoutout too to the committees and sponsors putting events together at such a difficult time. A great start to what is sure to be a stellar show career for this beautiful mare

03.01.2022 Chester the Wonder Cat Chester is our very deserving Pet of the Month. He initially presented for a life threatening condition commonly referred to as a ‘blocked cat’, where the urethra (the tube that takes urine out of the bladder) becomes obstructed. ... Urethral blockages are unfortunately very common in male cats. Their anatomy means this tube is very narrow, and very prone to blockage, inflammation and spasms. Such blockages stop the outflow of urine from the bladder and can be rapidly life threatening. The most common cause of a blockage is crystals in the urine which form a plug, causing distension of the bladder and putting enormous pressure on the kidneys. Affected cats require intensive care, not only to relieve the blockage but also to correct major electrolyte imbalances and protect the kidneys from failure. Chester was very severely affected, and required intensive medical care followed by major surgery to permanently relieve the urethral blockage. A perineal urethrostomy can be performed to remove the narrowest portion of the urethra, facilitating a better flow of urine with a much lower chance of reconstruction. This is major (major!) soft tissue surgery, but luckily Dr Keith and our team are up to the task! Chester has since made a full recovery, and is living his best life at home, on a prescription urinary diet, to make sure he has the best chance of long term health and wellness. We got to know Chester very well during his time with us - such a pawesome personality, and a very deserving Pet of the Month! Huge thanks to Bravecto AU for their ongoing support of our Pet of the Month - ticks are out in force, so please make sure your pet is up to date!

03.01.2022 This weekend we are celebrating National Wildlife Day Every year, we treat hundreds of cases of injured wildlife thankfully, our community is full of good samaritans who often rescue these animals from a terrible fate, and bring them to us or the 24 hour emergency clinics for treatment and care. We work an amazing network of carers and wildlife hospitals, with the ultimate goal always being the release of these animals back in to their natural habitat. We recommend alwa...ys keeping some old towels, bottled water and a sturdy box in your car boot, so you aren’t caught unawares if you do happen upon an injured animal. And be careful- they are often frightened and in pain, so may unintentionally lash out without realising you are trying to help. Proud to be a #wildlifewarrior clinic
