23.01.2022 As keen as we are sometimes - as teachers - to add to debate on politics, we don't normally go down this path with student plays, but ... At last week's Five Day Play in Newtown, our Year 3-4 Group devised a play we ended up calling The New Titanic. Here's the blurb: Unaware of the original disaster, a modern day ship's Captain calls his new ship The Titanic, against everyone's advice. Not surprisingly, on its maiden voyage, the New Titanic comes face to face with an ice-berg.... All passengers aboard - including Taylor Swift & Scomo (on holidays) panic! But there is no collision because Global Warming melts the ice-berg before it hits! Good news for all aboard. Not so good for The Atlantic Yeti whose home was the ice-berg. Cue monologue from the Yeti about the folly of all humans. He vows to get revenge and starts climbing up the ship. Tay Tay and the Crew meet the Yeti and are apologetic. The Captain suggests that perhaps Australia can re-house the poor displaced Yeti, and all call on Scomo to advise. But where's he gone? They all call out: 'Scomo? Where the Bloomin' Heck (sic) Are You?' After a few seconds, the top of Scomo's head appears from a lifeboat ... 'Ha ha ... How good's hiding?' 22.01.2022 Such fab feedback after our first face-to-face class starting back today, from the mum of a new Kindy student: 'Our little girl was so SO happy to have attended today! Recalling bits of vivid play. A child who generally "doesn't know or remember" anything about school. We can tell she has had so much fun and you, as an educator, are right up her alley. We believe she will flourish in this environment. And I really want to thank you for your energy, dedication and commitment to drama. '

It looks like there are some students in this class who believe that everyone else must sit still and patiently wait while they have their turn, but that it's okay for them to roll around and yell out when others have a turn. That's not okay. That's just not fair! We really all need to ... Yr 1 Student: (loudly calling out) Awwww! I do that! ... ME: Well, thank you for recognising that, but ... Yr 1 Student: Oh no! When I called out just then, I did it gain, didn't I? (Whole Class - including me - loses it with laughter!)

18.01.2022 Quite honestly just had our Best Five-Day Play EVER! Fabulous, happy kids working and playing and learning all week WITHOUT a small screen in sight, and devising / performing the best mini-plays we've seen in all our six years doing this school holiday drama program. Our K-2 prize-winner for the week (for coming up to us every lunch and recess break demanding to grab a script to read and practice with) was Noah - pictured here on the final day in his leopard face-paint! Also,... after the whole week was over, we had a Year 6 student, Anton say: 'I prefer the Five Day Play to ATYP because it's just more fun here, and MUCH more creative! Red Roar ROCKS!' 17.01.2022 I didn't get too tough on him, but I was working with an 11 year-old student today, on a monologue that he's written himself about having to answer police who are interrogating his character. To get the right emotion out of him, I asked him to imagine they were pushing and shoving him for answers. He said: 'They wouldn't be allowed to do that though! They are NOT allowed to do that!' The other same-aged students in the room were VERY quick to bring up EVERYTHING they've been... seeing on TV ... George Floyd, the 75 yr old who was pushed to the ground and seen by the offending Police Officers to be bleeding, but who then just walked past, not offering assistance. He still said: 'But that wouldn't happen in an interrogation!' This led to a bigger conversation about how much worse things could be off-camera than on-camera ... Young Awakenings! See more

16.01.2022 I did so many drama performances myself as a kid, and particularly loved the ones my Dad could make it to. It meant the world to me when he said he was proud of what I did on the stage. That's maybe why this little gem of feedback today meant more than most: ‘Daniel told me that the students going for nomination for school captain this week all said in their speeches that they got their confidence from the after school drama class. He said that he got lots of confidence from... it too, and it all goes back to his first monologue, things began to change for him from that point. (I don’t know if you remember, but this was the monologue that he begged me to get him out of because he was too scared to do it).’ It might seem overly simple, but this is quite simply why we do it: To help build more confident, articulate, and creative students who - through playing roles in drama - are better able to empathise, and understand things from another's point of view. Simple.

07.01.2022 Our First ZOOM After School Drama Class VIA ZOOM launched TODAY for K-2! Here's what just 2 two of the parents had to say about it: 'The class was fantastic! 06.01.2022 A lot of work in a session with K-2 students today on emotions and expressions. Half the group was watching the other half miming activities using different facial expressions. Then we swapped over. Observers were asked to nominate who they thought was expressing each emotion most clearly. (We really do find that this age group, more that Stage 2 or 3 students, are the most keen and excellent observers). Anyway, I completely forgot to ask them for their nominations of best expressions! Then, later, at break, a six year-old boy bounces up to me, all excited, keen to share what he'd observed and learned. He said: 'Elsie's face had the best explosion!' And you know ... I had to agree ...

About her daughter's participation, she says: "Ada is loving Drama, She told me happily she could "be herself", which is high praise from a 6.5 year old. It's not often she finds an activity where her highly active and excitable nature is so accepted. We have a very happy child every week." Ada's in our K-2 Class on Mondays at Dulwich Hill which has 5 spots available for a Term 4 start. The Year 3-6 Class has 10 spots available! 02.01.2022 Even though I've been at my most INERT when delivering classes ONLINE throughout COVID, I find it takes much more energy to engage students. Just had these snaps sent through from one mum to demonstrate the level of engagement on the other side of the screen! (Yes- it's me and my COVID double chin on screen here!) But this is Noah! He's REALLY leaning in! Noah's Mum, Sam said: 'the boys love the format and definitely engaged!' It's been a learning curve! But still looking forward to the switch back to face-to-face! Thanks Sam!
