23.01.2022 WHEN I'M ANXIOUS An Autistic-crafted resource by Dr Wenn Lawson as part of the "Nothing about me without me" series for the South Australia Department of Educat...ion (downloadable version here: tinyurl.com/y7xw6e8t). TEXT: All action/activity plans should be developed with or by me, not without me. Action/activity plans should be 'practiced' (role-played, written, visually represented with me) when I am calm. As an autistic I am single minded. Learning is off-line unless I am interested. I cannot multi-task unless connected with interests that motivate me. I need my interests built into the curriculum but not used as a reward. I need my interests built into relationships, too! My interests facilitate and maintain learning for me. When I am anxious, reactive restrictive practices CLOSE ME DOWN Interoception activities, knowledge, negotiation, value and respect SUPPORT ME Interests connect me. I connect to what interests me. Motivation draws me towards learning. Negotiation helps me feel more valued Learning through what interests me suits me. Rewards and praise increase anxiety, unless I design them. Making reasonable accommodations for me means allowing control and choice for me. Don't touch me. Show me. Don't speak to me. Show me.

08.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS UPDATE WITH TRANSCRIPT: The NDIA is now officially encouraging people to flexibly use your funds to purchase devices if you don't already have one... to access online therapy and fitness services. The NDIA is also working to source devices for participants! Information direct from NDIA DCEO Scott McNaughton on the currently broadcasting Every Australian Counts live webinar. Huge shout out to the Every Australian Counts team for their work to make this webinar happen, and to them and all the advocates and participants and families and providers who have been pushing so hard to help the NDIS support these purchases. You do not need reports etc to do this (but you might want some advice from an OT or similar to make sure you get what's needed) and claim from your core funds, but don't go silly - only buy what is needed (and that's not going to be the top of the line $1500 item - if you want that, maybe just claim the cost of a basic item). You would generally claim this from consumables funding, if not, from any other core :bucket". If you do not have core funds, and need the device to access CB funds, my personal opinion (not official at this point) would be to use your CB funds. You can also call the call centre on 1800 800 100 (select option 5) and ask them to shift funds, or switch some funds to self managed so you can purchase if you are agency managed. Here is part of the transcript from the EAC webinar: GAIL (webinar attendee): What if we do not have an iPad, laptop, computer, the internet? Can we use some NDIS funding for these things? SCOTT MCNAUGHTON: A really good question and one that is coming up a lot. It is one of the top questions being asked at our national contact centre. The positive around this, I must say, Gail, and people watching today, is that we are starting to hear a lot of innovative ways service providers are changing business models. Participants can continue to get some of their therapies and certain support by the internet. That is great. We have heard some examples of gym classes run online as well. Fantastic. It makes sure people can still access, using different social media to do that. It encourages providers to think innovatively. We do not want people... once the worlds wakes up in COVID- in six's month’s time with children having progress erased. We want access to continue for these innovative services. Regarding the actual question... a lot of Australians have access to those devices, we know that. But when you don't, and when you need a device to continue to access your disability services, we are encouraging you to use your NDIS plan to access those. So you can get those support. It is important, where you need certain things and those devices to be those online therapies, online gym classes. To connect with your speech therapist, or whoever is supporting you through your NDIS plan, we encourage people, if they do not have a device, to use the plane fixedly and purchased one. There will be more coming out on this including how we speed up the supply of access to those devices as well. We are working on that in the background, so in the meantime if you have funding in your plan and you need one of these to access your supports, we encourage you to use your plan flexibly to purchase such a device you can keep receiving supports. KIRSTEN DEANE: That's really good news. I can see from the chat, Stay tuned to https://www.ndis.gov.au/coronavirus for the official update to their Q&A's

06.01.2022 Hello everyone, With the outbreak and ongoing uncertainty of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we feel it is important to provide resources and ideas to ensure those who ...have communication challenges also get the information they need. Our Director, Janelle, has written a blog that includes a free communication board that you can download to help with these conversations. As Janelle says in her blog about talking to kids, "Just because you are not talking to them, it doesn’t mean they are not hearing things. The power and control for them (and for all of us) is in asking questions and talking about it." Link to blog and chat board is available here: https://janellesampson.wordpress.com//talking-to-kids-abo/ Have a good weekend everyone and take care of each other, Your friends at Two Way Street.

02.01.2022 Technology update re: tablets is here - Extract from website: 'Participants can now use their existing NDIS funding to purchase an item if:... it will maintain funded NDIS supports like a program, therapy or requirement (for example physiotherapy or Auslan interpreting provided via video conferencing), and the provider of supports has confirmed in writing the device is necessary to continue supports and services while maintaining physical distancing requirements, and it is the lowest specification that will maintain funded supports, and they do not already have the item, another suitable item or access to the item, and the item has not been funded by another service system (such as education), and the item or circumstances are not specifically excluded. Participants are able to spend up to $1500 on low cost AT items from their existing budgets. Participants should not spend more than $750 on electronic devices needed to maintain existing services. In the case of computer tablets for telehealth and care or participating in online video classes, advice from AT specialists is that most NDIS participants will not need more than a standard tablet, which costs no more than $600. Participants can use their funding flexibly to purchase low cost AT using funding in their core - consumables budget. Plan managed or self-managed participants can purchase these items from any provider, and Agency managed participants can purchase these from any registered NDIS provider (this could include a therapy or support coordination provider). This is a time limited policy which will be in place until September 2020 and will be reviewed at the end of June 2020'. https://www.ndis.gov.au//participants-co/using-your-budget

01.01.2022 Autism and coronavirus: Advice for parents Within the autism community we will face some unique challenges from the coronavirus outbreak. Some advise for parent...s below. 1. State the facts Only state clear objective facts about the virus. Don't engage or let them hear speculation. They will struggle to separate 'what ifs' from what is really happening. Try to answer their questions without giving unnecessary details that may alarm them. 2. Food stocking Do I think we need to be stockpiling food? No. I honestly don't. However! If you have an autistic child that will only eat specific things I do not think it will hurt to ensure you have a buffer of those foods. Don't assume you can go and get specifically what your child will eat, at short notice. 3. Routine Schools around the world are starting to close, as well as parents working from home. I would be preparing to change to a school holiday routine at short notice. Explaining it as a bonus school holiday may take it away from being a grey area of no school but it's not a holiday. If you live somewhere this is likely I would consider pre-empting a bonus holiday may be coming (this greatly depends on the child and how they deal with change). 4. Distance As an adult it is very hard to put distance between what is happening and myself. It's everywhere online. But children can be protected from that a lot more. Try to put some distance in their mind to stop them thinking it is right outside their door. Keep them away from the news if possible. 5. Let them cope As autistics we are pretty good at finding our own ways to cope. Little man piled pillows outside his door to 'stop the virus'. Will it in anyway help? No. Does it make him feel safe? Yes. Within reason let them cope how they need to. This is stressful for us all and likely a lot of us are worried. Please remember the fact it is governments deciding, or our own stress, doesn't change that the child is autistic. There is a lot of change. A lot of disruption. They are going to struggle. It being a global virus outbreak doesn't stop their autistic needs. I hope this has helped even a little bit. Any specific questions send me a message and I will gladly help. Stay safe everyone.
