19.01.2022 When I came to Fremantle there was only the Fremantle markets. I quickly realised I was living in a golden melting pot of musicians, artists and creatives who didnt have a place to gather, the support to set up a stall, the understanding of how to showcase their creativity. There was no where at lunchtime for workers, tourists, Mums and Dads with small kids to listen to live music, to enjoy the heart of Fremantle, and to meet locals and get a Freo experience. The Villag...e Art Market was born and every Thursday we met at the market. Wether you wanted to drink coffee with the Mayor, or meet your Mothers Group or join the Crochet Cafe group, tai chi was popular in the mornings and drumming in the afternoons. All the days we celebrated...International Womens Day, Harmony Day, White Ribbon Day, the Tomato Festival...so many cultural events. The market and the patrons were diverse and a wonderful reflection of life in Fremantle. 8 yrs of creating friendships, small businesss, creative networks and all the spin offs ...including providing markets for all the festivals that came to Freo. Supporting people with disabilities to have stalls. It was what they call perfect timing, things were different back then. It was when I realised that this was what I want to do for the rest of my life...bring people together, support creativity, make people feel good, support local livelihoods, inspire and be inspired ...and bring the musical talents of Fremantle to the people without the need for money, baby sitters or ear plugs. How lucky! Thanks to the power of social media I still get sent pictures of the market and messages about it! Its been a while since we were there but the ripples continue and some of those stallholders I started with in 2004 are still with me today at Freo Farmers Market!
