24.01.2022 COVID-19: REDVets Toowoomba Business will continue to operate as normal, maintaining our regular business hours. We ask that you help us implement the following measures in order to protect our team and clients; If you are feeling unwell, or have been exposed to someone potentially with COVID-19: BUT your pet needs to visit the clinic, please phone ahead and plans can be made for a drop-off or initial phone consultation.... We will be observing the recommended social distancing measures of no handshakes, 1.5m distance between people and only having face-to-face contact where necessary. Please bare this in mind in the waiting areas of the clinic. We ask that you use the supplied hand sanitiser on the way in and out of the building. Some information from the World Health Organisation about animal transmission of COVID-19: There is no evidence that a dog, cat or any pet can transmit COVID-19. COVID-19 is mainly spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. To protect yourself, clean your hands frequently and thoroughly. We thank you for your understanding, and know that we will get through this together. We will be continuing to update you on our protocols and any change to our business. We will remain open as a 24/7 emergency clinic no matter how the situation progresses. The care of your pets remains our primary focus, and we hope that you all stay well over the coming weeks.

24.01.2022 When a caesarean goes well it can be the best feeling in the world! Welcoming and resuscitating tiny little puppies into the world gives us all the feels @ Toowoomba, Queensland

24.01.2022 PARVOVIRUS UPDATE Unfortunately over the past few weeks we have been seeing a high number of dogs diagnosed with parvovirus. Parvovirus is an awful disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract. It can live in the soil for up to 9 years and is highly infectious! These dogs become extremely unwell and usually we see this disease in young unvaccinated dogs and puppies. Parvovirus is a completely preventable disease through vaccination. Every puppy needs at least a three cou...rse vaccination schedule and an annual/triennial booster to ensure they are protected. Parvovirus causes immense suffering for these poor dogs. Treatment is extremely intensive and the cost to owners easily in the thousands of dollars. A vaccination costs just a fraction of the price of treating this awful disease. For most dogs parvovirus is a death sentence. Some suburbs that we are seeing many cases from include Harlaxton, Pittsworth and Gowrie Junction but all of Toowoomba should be aware! We cannot stress enough the importance of vaccinating your dogs and while self isolating maybe think about keeping your furry friends home too! See more

21.01.2022 Molly Molly came in on a Saturday night after being in unproductive labour for hours. Molly was fatigued and we knew the safest option for both her and her babies was to perform an emergency caesarean ... Thankfully our team were here and ready and Molly was taken straight to surgery! Luckily we were able to resuscitate eight beautiful corgi puppies and Molly adores them #redvetstoowoomba #emergencyvet #caesarean #corgi #puppies

19.01.2022 PATIENT OF THE MONTH PSA: Graphic content Lola is a 10 year old Staffy who presented to us after she had been vomiting and was lethargic. Her owners said she had been licking up some lamb fat that morning off the gravel outside.... Our first thought was soon proven to be correct, she had not only eaten the lamb fat, but had ingested ALOT of the gravel as well. Check out her xrays below to see how much gravel was in her stomach and intestines! We had to take little Lola to surgery to remove the gravel as it had caused a severe impaction. Lola handled the anaesthetic and surgery beautifully but she was still very sore afterwards. It took her a few extra days in hospital to full recover, with daily visits from a very worried mum. Lola is now at home, and she has fully recovered. Although we're not sure she won't make the same mistake again!

18.01.2022 PATIENT OF THE MONTH Dolly is an 18 month old Kelpie who came to us Christmas Eve after being hit by a car on her property. She initially presented to her regular vet who provided emergency care and initial diagnostics. It was found that Dolly had a luxated left hip as you can see by the xrays below. There is a chance that you can reduce the hip back into place, done under an anaesthetic as it is very painful. Her regular vets tried to put it back into place but decided that... it would be too traumatic for her to continue so opted to refer to us. When she presented to us Dolly was as sweet as ever, even with the amount of pain she would have been in. She had a waggy tail and lots of kisses to give. We did have to anaesthetise her again and were able to reduce her hip, but unfortunately her ligaments had been stretched due to the trauma and the hip would not stay in place. The radiographs below show that we were able to get the hip back into place under the anaesthetic but without surgery it would not stay in place. On Friday the specialist surgeon performed a hip toggle surgery on Dolly. The image below shows how the toggle is placed through the femoral head and around the acetabulum to allow the hip to stay in place. The last xray shows the toggle in Dolly's leg. Dolly's procedure went very well, and she is now recovering at home. She will remain on cage rest while she recovers, but her owners say that she is loving the extra cuddles she is getting, especially from the cat!

18.01.2022 Luna Luna presented to us in the middle of the night after her owners thought she had a seizure. When Luna got to us she was struggling to move her body and raise her head so we started running tests to see what could be wrong. After doing diagnostics we discovered that Luna had been bitten by a snake! We immediately started snake antivenin and Luna seemed to be doing well overnight. ... Without warning Luna started struggling to breathe and we immediately had to intubate and breathe for her. Snake bite paralysis can get worse before it gets better and unfortunately for Luna she had a long way to go Luna had to be put into a light anaesthetic state and be on 100% oxygen supplementation for over 30 hours! When a patient is this critical they have a designated nurse to stay with them at all times. Luna needed intensive supportive care including help with expressing her bladder, lubricating her eyes and mouth, changing her position so she didn’t develop any sores and much more! Thankfully Luna’s owners wanted us to do everything we could for her because this sweet girl wasn’t finished fighting! From a dog that could not move a muscle to a sweet girl sitting up in her cage, giving us kisses and wagging her tail This is why 24hr care is so important for our pets and why our team is so passionate about emergency and critical care Without it Luna wouldn’t have made it home to her family Luna’s parents picked her up yesterday afternoon bringing flowers and a card for the hardworking team that fought for their baby! Luna’s parents were thankful to us but we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to do what we love and to save a life #redvetstoowoomba #emergencyvet #snakebites #criticalcare #toowoomba #savinglives #lovemyjob

16.01.2022 Baskerville and the skewer! Baskerville came in to us one evening after his little human fed him an entire chicken skewer! We were concerned that if we did not take action the skewer could travel through his gastrointestinal tract and create a blockage or potentially puncture through and cause internal damage!... We used our endoscope to try and visualise the skewer and see if we could pull it back up through his mouth but we were met with a full belly of dog bickies, blocking our view Without being able to locate the skewer our best choice was to take Baskerville to surgery to remove it. We were lucky we did because we found three sharp pieces of skewer hidden in the stomach! Baskerville is now at home recovering well and has been banned from eating any more chicken skewers
