24.01.2022 The other day I saw a sponsored video from a fitness professional saying that NO amount of bloating should ever happen in a healthy gut. WHAAAAAAT?!? That is utter BS. We have this tendency to think that any food or meal that triggers even mild bloating must be bad for us or that we must be intolerant to it, but in most cases it’s just because we’ve eaten more fibre than usual. The gut bacteria ‘eat’ that fibre up and cause a little bloating. Does that mean fibre is bad for u...s? Of course not! Think of it like exercise: if you take a few weeks (or months, or years) away from the gym, you’ll likely experience muscle soreness when you go back. But does that mean exercise is bad for us? Obviously not. It was the time off that was the culprit. The same is true with fibre intake. Going from a processed diet to a higher-fibre one too quickly can cause some tummy upset, but it was the processed diet that did the damage. So don’t rush to self-diagnose or remove too many foods from your diet for no reason. Instead, and just like exercise, start slow and build your fibre intake up over time. Your gut will likely adapt. And if you DO experience bloating that is painful, lasts more than a few days, or is accompanied by other symptoms, then get yourself down to your GP to find out what’s going on. #bsfreenutrition

15.01.2022 What’s for lunch: A or B?

07.01.2022 I’m gonna say it: I’m so sick of seeing headlines like Bust Stress with [insert obscure diet] and Boost Your Mood with [weird GOOP-y trend] because by and large, they’re a load of crap. Here’s the thing: headlines move quickly, but science is much slower. So forget chasing the latest trend, because chances are it’s total BS. Instead, focus on committing to an eating pattern that we know can make real change to your mental health and wellbeing. #BSfreenutrition #nutrition #mentalhealth #mediterraneandiet

05.01.2022 Firstly, yes I’m eating lunch at 10.30am. There are no rules anymore. Secondly, are you looking for ways to sneak more plants into your diet? If not, you probably should be. Most of us are fibre deficient, and it shows itself in expanding waistlines, poor mental health, and confused immune systems. Black beans are around 6-7% dietary fibre (and LOADED with protein, but that’s another story), and two of these burgers plus a big healthy salad delivers the majority of your daily... fibre requirements. 01.01.2022 Let’s talk about ‘boosting’ immunity, and why you don’t want to do it. The immune system is complex, and it doesn’t just come with a dial that you can use to ramp it up or down. In fact, an overactive immune system is just as bad as an under-active one despite what the chatter on social media might tell you. Instead, what you want to do is support the function of a normal and balanced (not boosted) immune system. And how do we do that? Yep, by getting the basics right. A mi...cronutrient-rich diet that has plenty of gut-loving fibre, regular exercise, plenty of sleep, rest and less stress, avoiding alcohol... and washing our hands. So the next time you see someone on social media pushing a product that claims to ‘boost immunity’, take it with a grain of salt. #bsfreenutrition
