17.01.2022 Below is an email I received regarding one of our finishing 2017 ASbAs. Congratulations Zach and Well Done to Adam and the Team at Geebung. ‘The VET Student of the Year Award is presented to a student who has participated in a range of vocational education and training activities, with a view to improving employment options at the end of Year 12. The winner of this year’s award embodies all of the reasons why vocational education and training is an important option for senior... students. To quickly tell you their story This student finished Year 10 at risk of disengaging from their education with poor results, poor attendance and a lack of confidence, but with some success in work experience and a trade course. The student themselves identified this and approached the VET team for assistance with options to spend time in the workplace in combination with their senior subjects. This resulted in a school-based traineeship one day per week in Year 11. As the completion date for this traineeship grew closer, the student again approached the VET team, this time for external trade course options. During Year 12, this has resulted in the student spending one day per week completing their traineeship, one day per week at TAFE, and the other three days at school undertaking Maths, English and other VET courses. This has seen improved results, improved attendance and an increase in confidence. This student has used VET to not only further their skills and knowledge in a particular trade training area, but has also, in the space of two short years, seen them grow from a student at risk of not completing senior, to one more confident in their own abilities, well respected by trade trainers and employers, and with an impressive resume to present to prospective employers as they head into their post-school life. The winner has participated in several work experience placements, has achieved four Certificate II level qualifications, and has completed a school-based traineeship with glowing testimonials from his supervisor and work colleagues. The VET team at Earnshaw State College is very proud to announce that the 2017 VET Student of the Year is Zachary Woolford.’
