23.01.2022 Strawberry has been the top story all afternoon on WAtoday.com.au. She literally rotted from the inside out - just so a puppy farmer could supply a pet shop. Ve...ry soon, a bill to ban the sale of puppies in pet shops will go before the West Australian Parliament. But right now... it might not have the numbers to pass. Our message to opposition and crossbench MPs is: this is the cruelty you will be supporting by knocking back the Stop Puppy Farming Bill back. Send them a message and urge them to support here: https://www.oscarslaw.org//pass-laws-to-fight-west-austral Read Strawberry's story here: https://www.watoday.com.au//puppy-farm-sting-strawberry-th

09.01.2022 Over the past few weeks we have seen a large increase in the number of dogs presenting to us with Canine Cough, also known as 'Kennel Cough'. Kennel Cough is a... highly contagious respiratory illness which often presents with a harsh and persistent hacking cough, like your pet has something stuck in their throat. You may also notice sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy or loss of appetite. Kennel Cough is transmitted via water droplets and can be passed on via direct contact with an infected animal as well as indirectly by coming into contact with a contaminated surface (e.g. the shared water bowl at a public dog park). We have even seen infections occur in dogs who haven't left their backyard, which makes the name 'Kennel Cough' very misleading. Whilst a boarding kennel is a popular place for an outbreak due to large gatherings of dogs in one place, infections can occur anywhere, regardless of whether your dog goes to kennels or not. Luckily, there are vaccines available to help prevent your pet from contracting this illness. Although vaccination doesn't guarantee immnuity from the desease, it does reduce your pet's chances and means an infection will be less severe and easier to treat than if they didn't receive the vaccination. If you notice any signs that your pet may be unwell or you need to check your pet's vaccination status, please call us on 6230 2223. https://www.hallvet.com.au//canberras-kennel-cough-outbre/

02.01.2022 Paralysis Tick Warning In the last week we have treated three cases of tick paralysis already... Tick Paralysis or ‘toxicity’ occurs when ticks over a period of... time cause single organ toxicity, targeting the cardiac system, bladder and lungs etc. Severe paralysis generally sets in within a day to two weeks. The tick injects a poison into the dog or cat as it feeds, causing weakness, irritation, a change in pitch in the meow or bark, wobbliness and collapse. If you find a tick on your pet; Stay calm! This is the most important thing you can do for your pet, as affected animals cope poorly with stress or overheating. Contact a Vet immediately and arrange to bring your pet in. Do not wait until the next morning. Remove any visible ticks with a hook or tweezers (and search for more ticks if one is discovered) and try to keep your pet relaxed, quiet and cool. It is important to seek emergency care even if you remove the offending tick(s). The toxin typically continues to poison your dog or cat and timely treatment is still required. Paralysis Ticks can be avoidable so it is important to always use tick prevention and check your pet twice daily especially if you go to coastal areas. See more
