18.01.2022 FUN FACT FRIDAY! Did you know that ants never sleep and they also don’t have lungs! Like all other insects, ants are too small to accommodate a complex respiratory system. But they have their own system of transporting air around their bodies. Ants take in oxygen through spiracles tiny openings spread throughout their body walls.
18.01.2022 Osteoarthritis WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? Like humans, animals can suffer from osteoarthritis (commonly known as arthritis). And, as with humans, it doesn’t just impact the elderly. Younger dogs can also suffer from this incredibly painful condition.... What exactly is osteoarthritis? As the name suggests, ‘osteo’ refers to bone, and ‘itis’ refers to inflammation. A degenerative disease, it progressively gets worse over time if left untreated. How common is arthritis? Arthritis affects at least one in five, and is the number one cause of chronic pain in dogs. It can significantly impact their quality of life, dramatically reducing their ability to walk, run, jump and play. What causes arthritis? The number one cause of arthritis is wear and tear on the protective layer of the bone, called cartilage. This wear and tear creates inflammation within the joint, leading to pain and further degradation of the cartilage cells. Developmental issues in younger dogs, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, are other common causes of arthritis. That’s why it’s so important to ensure your young dog maintains a healthy weight and is fed a high-quality diet. If you think your dog may be suffering from arthritis, please call us on 55938395 to schedule an appointment and discuss different ways to help manage this in your pet!

14.01.2022 Everyone meet Suzie! Suzie has had both cruciates repaired with a TPLO technique by Dr. Justin. What is a TPLO? A TPLO, shortened for tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, is a method of surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament.... Cranial cruciate ligament rupture is a common cause of hind leg lameness in dogs, of which unfortunately in suzie’s case one cruciate was repaired and over a period of time her other cruciate on the other leg needed the TPLO procedure as well. Depending on case you case this can be common for the second leg needing to be repaired. Pictured is Dr. Justin using a specialised computer software to prepare for Suzie’s surgeries. With the final set of follow up xrays at 6weeks. The video in the comments below shows Suzie walking around at her follow up appointment. She was a great patient during these procedures and with a little bit more recovery time, she will be out and about & back to her adventurous self!

04.01.2022 Meows are the most frequent form of vocalisation between a cat and their human. But what are cats trying to communicate when they meow? - Illness: numerous diseases can cause cats to experience symptoms that lead them to meow excessively. The first step is to visit your veterinarian if you’re concerned about your cat’s meowing, particularly if it’s sudden. - Seeking attention: contrary to popular belief, cats don’t like to be alone all of the time. Sometimes they’ll meow be...cause they want your attention; to play, be petted or for you to talk to them. - Hungry or wanting food: many cats become vocal close to feeding time - They’re aging: like humans, cats can suffer from confusion and cognitive dysfunction as they age. - Breeding: unneutered or unspayed cats can meow excessively in an effort to breed.
