21.01.2022 New Blog Post! . 2020 has seen the world come to an almost complete stand-still but the need to collect robust data and to continue monitoring the marine environment remains a high priority Fortunately, an easing of restrictions in WA in early April provided a perfect opportunity for a team of [socially-distanced] RLS divers to head out & complete the 13th consecutive year of monitoring at Rottnest Island. ... . . . Massive shout out to Paul Day for all the hard work he put in to make this year's Rotto trip happen, and for the great write-up! Thanks also to all our fabulous volunteers for their efforts! Also a huge thank you to the Rottnest Island Authority for allowing us to continue to monitor the beautiful marine environment around Rottnest Island, and to Boating West for their vessel support! 16.01.2022 New research out this week by researchers at UNSW uses ten years of Reef Life Survey data to show that temperate reef fish communities across southeast Australia display strong latitudinal patterns in food web structure. As species shift their distributions polewards due to climate change, we can now expect there will also be shifts in food web structure, which will likely cause changes to reef habitat and impact predators. 16.01.2022 Our Australian Marine Parks are having a positive effect on the marine life which call our oceans home. Surveys undertaken in 2018 by Reef Life Survey Foundat...ion (RLS) across the North-west Marine Parks network off Western Australia revealed that, since the last survey in 2013, the highly protected sites at Ashmore Reef Marine Park had increased fish biomass, the number of fish species, and the density of macroinvertebrates. Coral communities also showed signs of continued recovery, with total live coral cover and richness of corals and algae increasing throughout much of the network. These positive results also suggest that the increased presence of the Australian Border Force ensuring compliance with marine park regulations in the region, has likely contributed to the recovery of populations of large fish. The full article about the Reef Life Survey study is now available on our Science Atlas http://bit.ly/36N65bj Andrew Green, Reef Life Survey

11.01.2022 The RLSF AGM was held on Monday, so we can officially announce this year's Scoresby Shepherd Award recipients! Every year, in honour of Dr Scoresby Shepherd a key benefactor and founding board member the RLSF presents two awards (aptly named The Scoresby Shepherd Awards) to RLS members for their exceptional contributions to RLS throughout the financial year. Congratulations and a massive thank you to Colleen Morris and Yanir Seroussi for taking out this year’s awards. ... Colleen donates many hours each year to RLS and this year, in particular, her financial and business knowledge has been invaluable in keeping the RLSF running smoothly, this year she is the successful recipient of the Outstanding Contributions Award. Yanir has been an active diver with RLS for 9 years and contributed many hours to creating the Frequency Explorer and Species Identification Flash Cards (https://reeflifesurvey.com/frequency-explorer/) which is a fantastic resource for RLS divers. This year, Yanir has participated in a number of RLS survey trips and is the successful recipient of the RLS Survey Award for the most number of surveys completed in the financial year. We give huge thanks to everyone who has volunteered their time and effort to RLS over the 2020 financial year, we couldn't do it without you!

03.01.2022 Is this a type of sea star? A relative of the sea star, basket stars are filter feeders that are most recognisable by the twirly appendages that branch out w...hen collecting their meals. The small hooks and spines found all over their many arms are useful when latching onto prey. Often found perched on sponges, soft corals and rocks they will uncoil their arms to form what looks like a feeding basket to capture their prey. When they sense a predator around, their branches fold back into themselves forming a tight ball giving them the appearance of a type of sponge or coral to elude a potential attack. Ocean Imaging
